Official HD Video for "Prime Time" by The Alan Parsons Project
`Prime Time' was the second single from `Ammonia Avenue' - a 1984 studio album by The Alan Parsons Project. The video is inspired by John Collier's story "Evening Primrose" and features two mannequins coming to life and falling in love in a downtown nighttime setting straight out of a horror movie. The single was a hit in the US and features APP founder and songwriter Eric Woolfson on lead vocals and Wurlitzer piano. The regular trio of Ian Bairnson, David Paton and Stuart Elliott feature on guitars, bass and drums with additional vocals by Chris Rainbow

I work at a record store and one morning my boss dropped the needle on this album. I heard this song and just stood there dumbfounded listening intently, having one of the most intense moments of frisson I've ever experienced. This, followed by I Robot, sent me into a music rabbithole I never expected. Alan Parsons is a truly talented man and an inspiration as a fellow music producer. The sky's the limit.

What a guitar part from Ian Bairnson! I remember, once I was hanging out in my apartment with a music channel on the TV on and barely noticed a guitar solo during a live concert of Beverly Craven and then I stopped... but.. but.. this guitar touch.. this vibrato.. isn't that Ian Bairnson? I rushed to the TV to see him actually playing with Beverley Craven. Haha I was so happy to see him and so proud to have recognized his unique guitar touch...

+Tracy It's Eric Woolfson on lead vocals, co-writer and producer with Alan Parsons on nearly all their albums. He also played keyboards. Sadly, he died in December 2009.

Its true, some of the best people in the world are the ones that dont consider themselves fit for the trade they are thrown into. Eric never considered himself a polished singer, he just wanted to write songs and play the piano parts of the songs. However, as a songwriter and Executive Producer, he had to make a guide vocal track for the singers that were brought in, eventually he sang "Time" and it was a big hit, and with a music label pressuring them to get Eric to sing more, he had to keep singing on their albums.

I heard it on the radio quite a bit but I agree. At that time is should've easily been a top 10 hit. Still made the top 40 though and was played a lot on rock radio.

Yeah, what pissed me off about APP was how they'd like edit some of their tracks on their best of's like this song on Best of Part 2... When I was first getting into them back in high school, I was like buying a CD probably every two weeks but I remember buying the 2nd Best of and loving the song... then when I finally get to Ammonia Ave., I remember kind of being like WTH guys!? hearing that like 45 or 1 minute they'd chopped off the best of. Like damn that was a good ending and unfortunate edit lol

You know, considering this was before CGI, and they didn't have an unlimited budget, I think they did a very good job with the special effects, costumes, props and sets. This video really captures the mood, very well, and tells a story. Whoever did this was very creative, imaginative, and I think made a lot of great choices. It's still interesting to watch all these years later, and of course, the song is amazing.

I agree it's a great video. Back then, they didn't have huge budgets for music videos but were able to create some good ones. You don't need huge budgets, CGI, etc. to make something good, look at the original Dr. Who series. This video is similar to the Twilight Zone episode "The After Hours." If you want to see it, the original version in B/W with Anne Francis is the one to see. There was a remake in 1986 with Terry Farrell and Ann Wedgeworth. It's not bad, but the original was much better.

@@Kaleiddmode Except of one the more unique attributes of APP was the diversity in the vocalists. Using a single vocalist would have limited the different styles and ranges of the songs. Woolfson's voice definitely helped keep the APP diversified and I would rank him up as one of the top vocalist. Eric's most important contribution was the collaboration with Alan on writing and producing all these great meaningful songs and the Project would have greatly suffered and possibly never have happened without their partnership. He had a wonderfully rich voice. and I was very sad when I found out he had succumbed to his illness. I am not sure but if I am able to be lying on my death bed listening to music (after a very long a fruitful life), I hope one of APP's songs will be the last song I have the chance and pleasure to experience. The real question is, which one will it be and will it be one with lyrics or one of their instrumental pieces. I'm leaning towards "Nothing Left To Lose" but there are so many to choose from! Every Dec 2nd I pay tribute to Eric, I closed the door to my stereo room, sit back in the dark without distractions and enjoy a couple of Woolfson's songs and remember his great works! 64 short years of existence is far too short of a life.

I remember as a kid I used to have reoccurring dreams about what the mannequins in the mall did after everybody went home at night. I used to feel like they were watching me whenever I'd go there. Staring at me, a little smile on their painted faces. Almost like they knew that I knew about them. I guess it's weird, but I was a VERY imaginative kid. This video came out and it was so eerie and creepy to me but I absolutely LOVED it! It's a great song, but the video is something I'll never forget. I still think about it whenever I see a mannequin.

Im not an expert, but my understanding is that Eric wrote the songs, playing them on piano and singing them (listen to the demo version of Old and Wise). Then Alan comes along and decides which instruments play where, and then he also decides which person sings the songs. That is why both of them get songwriting credits.

Such a great song. But for me the real highlight is Bairnson's melodic guitar playing. Very tasteful with just the right amount of grittiness. Such an under-appreciated musician.

There have distinct features from one band to another, but because most millenials and zillenials have longed for songs that not only captivated their hearts, but also reconnected them, this trend upsurges which resonated the music era of 80s until 90s. No casualmente este tipo aparece metido en la historia de Beatles y Pink Floyd..de todas maneras creo que mas alla de que haya quienes disfrutemos enormemente de estos artistas representan una epoca,un momento,una manera de ver el mundo..y esas son cosas que cambian constantemente..los sonidos de ahora no los pìenso como malos o buenos..son solo producto del momento en que vivimos y como lo vivimos..el punto es que es lo que perdura en el tiempo y que se termina olvidando..y eso es una cuestion de cada uno...me encanta que haya tanta gente que comparta y disfrute estas canciones que yo escuchaba desde chiquito y ahora que tengo 45 me siguen acompañando..saludos paz musica y amor!

Whenever I'm in the mood to watch something with a little creep factor, I watch this. I'm considering getting a bunch of junk mannequins, placing them around the house, one in the closet (I'll open the door via remote controlled actuator), & one down the hall silhouetted so just the outline is discernible, putting a cam on the bookshelf and recording my wife's reaction when she gets home.

Me too! It was called "The After Hours" and starred Anne Francis. There was a remake in the 1980s with Terry Farrell and Ann Wedgeworth, but the original was better.
