Writer Ben Miller leads Jim Al-Khalili through our search for alien life in the Universe in the first of our new podcast series bringing you thought provoking lectures and discussions from the world's sharpest minds.
For millennia, we have looked up at the stars and wondered whether we are alone in the Universe. In the last few years, scientists have made huge strides towards answering that question. Comedian and bestselling science writer Ben Miller is in conversation with Jim Al-Khalili, taking us on a fantastic voyage of discovery, from the beginnings of life on earth to the very latest search for alien intelligence.

What's seldom explained is this: By the time our EMI from TV or radio etc has exited the earth's atmosphere, how strong is it and how strong would it need to be for another civilisation to be able to absorb it in it's atmosphere and receive & produce it at say 1, 10, 50 or 100 light years or the like. Similarly, what about signals deliberately sent. Any good links?

Very interesting and entertaining presentation. The discussion concerning why aliens have not visited us already is sorely lacking in depth, but it is what it is. The are several obvious questions that were not dealt with at all: such as what would motivate aliens to undertake the colonization of the galaxy (plz don't say scientific curiosity); would any species even be able to accomplish such a feat?; how many alien species existing in the last few billion years would try to do it (how many would fail and how many would succeed?; and lastly -- and most importantly -- what would be the most probable result of all this? For instance, and just as a start, aliens would likely be looking for two things: raw materials; and more living space. From there, some conclusions can definitely be drawn as to why they have not presented themselves for our perusal.

I predict this will not age well. If you haven't listened to it yet, most of the hour is spent laughing and giggling over how silly it is to think NHI has visited the planet. This interview perfectly encapsulates the narrow-minded scientific dogma that currently saturates mainstream academia. On the one hand, spending hundred of millions (possibly now into the billions?) on SETI is seen as an admirable pursuit, whilst those who wish to study UAP/UFO in our own atmosphere are seen as foolish. Following David Grusch's testimony this past July (2023), the Disclosure process has begun and soon we will all realise just how much has been hidden from us over the past 90 years.

There's plenty of people seen these things and these guys just mock it, sadly.
