I like the Longprimer 62 quite a lot. The paper and bold print are fantastic, and I'm surprised the Meriva calfskin isn't more popular. I wish Oxford had decided to retain italic type for the translator-supplied words and had slipped a little more space between the lines. Had they done those two things, this Bible would be nearly perfect, imo.

I've been binge watching your videos for a couple of hours and stopped but this just came up on the algorithm and I thought i haven't see that one. Think this is a good Bible. Had some trouble with a couple of Allan's with either 1) the book block not being totally straight. 2) the typeset missing letters. It looks like they've sorted their printer out but not the uniformity. I'm going to order that purple one anyway in a couple of weeks God willing, thanks for the review Grant. God bless you.

You're the best bible reviewer on KZfaq IMHO, what most do including me is just sharing the materials. If someone truly wants a great "review" this is the place to come. I think the sovereign is my favorite kJV bible, its not perfect but I really love the bible as a whole. The Mariva is very nice but seems almost to soft LOL, the goatskin has a full yapp and keeps the form which I really love . That's a beautiful bible brother I'd like to have one not marked up someday mine was slightly used but still its awesome to own. You've been busy brother I have lots to catch up on, and thanks for the prayers😇

Thanks for the kind words, Salem! No, I don't know the answer to your question, but my guess is that "1" looks so much like "l" (lowercase L) that the typesetters chose to start with the more distinctive "2".

Honest opinion - Allan’s Meriva Calfskin vs Highland Goatskin (bearing in mind that Allen is using the calfskin as a substitute until the highland can be farmed again - and that they are the same price) I have the Westminster Meriva - would you know if it’s the same as that?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't feel the same, but the Westminster is a paste down, so it's far less flexible.

the conjunction ‘but’ indicates a contradiction 🧐 Help me out on this one 😂
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 4 жыл бұрын
My translation: It doesn't feel the same, but I can't be sure how the two compare. Why? Because they aren't constructed alike. The Allan is edge lined, so it's very flexible. 'But' the Westminster is a paste down, so I can't tell how flexible the leather is. Why? Because of the stiff material that lies underneath the leather in a paste down Bible. In other words, if the Bibles were constructed in the same way, I could make a better comparison. Sorry for the confusion. I was rushed when I responded this morning. Thanks for the question.
@jamesmackenzie1336
@jamesmackenzie1336 4 жыл бұрын
The first sentence is a paradox “It doesn't feel the same, but I can't be sure how the two compare.” I think I understand what you are trying to say; You surmise that an edge-line vs a paste down with the same cover will feel different. I have to agree - but there are reviewers out there that are saying the Meriva is better than the highland goatskin. I suppose it’s subjective but given the difference in value (Allen tries to hide this by charging the same price - tut tut) I would always stick with goatskin. In fact I would have Lamb skin higher up than calf so meriva is two levels below goatskin and 3 levels below Highland

I use a couple older World publishing large print reference Bibles I have collected (as new). They were from the late 70s or early 80s. I love them as compared to modern bibles as they have India paper. The ghosting, even on the so called "high quality" bibles, does not compare. They should still use this paper. There is nothing better.
@tbone8358
@tbone8358 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of many of the bibles with red text for Christ or red text for chapter headings etc.. I find it harder to read, distracting, and it's especially bad for people who are somewhat red/colour-blind because it can make it very hard to read. PS. If you ever get a chance to compare this with a 52 in a video that would be cool. I think you'll appreciate the differences between the fonts/boldness. Then you could also compare the typography like you did with page 1004-1006. You'll notice immediately that the 52 (which I own) has a less bold font overall. You might like the boldness IDK. I think the paper is also supposed so be a bit "creamier" of a color for the 52? Anywho. I love the meriva calfskin. I'll be receiving a goatskin 43 soon and I would like to get a 53 someday or a 63. I would like to see R.L. Allan make a 72 and 73 (Longprimers with WIDE MARGIN!! Meriva and Goatskin respectively). As far as I know the sovereign is supposed to be bolder than the 53/52/43 I love the Longprimer font. Do you know which fonts are similar to Longprimer (that are more common? For word/pages etc) Thanks! That Turquoise that you're comparing with the 62 at 17:30 has font that to me just looks a little bit too "playful". I love how "flat" and "straight" the longprimer font looks especially if you compare the lowercase "L" and the all of the "S" letters. Obviously both are nice! Just trying to point out little things I notice. I can see why people like the Schuyler font. I can also see why some people do not care for it. If they made a KJV without their logo (if they changed their logo) I might try one but I am not a fan of the 5 crosses. I don't know why. It just rubs me the wrong way and I can't tell why. *EDIT I actually like the line spacing and overall font of the longprimer too because it feels like the ink is taking up all the room on the page yet there's still the perfect amount of room and characters per line to easily read.

What does the number 62 denote? Or the 53 etc?
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, Noah the Flowa. That number is the publisher's way of distinguishing various editions of the Longprimer. Take a look at R.L. Allan's web site: www.bibles-direct.co.uk/ . Currently, they have the 52, 53, 62, and 63 for sale. The 52 and 62 are in calfskin, while the 53 and 63 are in goatskin. The 52 and 53 have the normal-sized 36 gsm paper, while the 62 and 63 (the Sovereign editions) have 40 gsm (heavier) paper with wider margins.

Do any Allan Longprimer KJV Bibles have italics for supplied words? Is the dictionary in the back for words whose meaning has changed? Thanks
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, Fernando. No, as far as I know, all Allan Longprimer KJVs are based on the same 1952 Oxford edition. None has translator-supplied words in italics. The dictionary is a "Dictionary of Scripture Proper Names." It gives the meaning of the name -- e.g., Abez means whiteness.

Watching reruns brother 😉 I noticed that your Sovereign print problem is identical too mine on page 1006 and 1004 . 1004 is very dark , I find it unusual that my older Highland Goatskin edition has the same ink fading. I have come too the conclusions that it's not low ink nor ramdom when they print these. I believe their high quality printing is giving us an exact copy of the original longprimer used to make these with flaws an all. I also found this same printing issue with my Cambridge Concord in John 3:16 the red letter text is faded and actually slightly broken up . I'm willing to bet that even the black prints have some printing variations issues at JN 3:16 . I had people check their bibles at one time and everyone said their red letter prints were all the same way. I wonder if your black text Concord has faded and choppy print at JN 3:16? You would think that technology these days in printing could fix this especially when folks are dropping $250 + for a premium . Anyways...yes I'm bored 😉 Blessings brother .

Rudolf - Sorry. The links are now in the description, just above the contents. I plan to review the Hendrickson interlinear soon. I'm not qualified to review Latin works (not that I'm qualified to review any works, actually, but at least I can interpret Greek with a bit of work), and I like to space out the Greek reviews, the same way I space out the Roman Catholic, Dispensationalist, Reformed, etc., works and the different English translations. I hope by sequencing the reviews that way no one gets bored, though some, who want to see a particular type of review, may find my method frustrating.

I don't care for the schuyler's or cambridges or even LCBP. As far as I understand LCBP is not CBP. CBP seems pretty great I would love to see them leather-line their bibles too. I prefer R. L. Allan's overall.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 5 жыл бұрын
I have three problems with the Schuyler Canterbury: (1) the font is too skinny for its size, (2) the references are at the bottom of the page, and (3) it includes no translation notes. I like the Cambridge Cameo and the Concord, but of the two I prefer the Cameo. The Cambridge Turquoise looks beautiful, and maybe one day they'll print a black letter edition. CBP seems to have been established by former LCBP personnel. I have three LCBP Bibles and one CBP Bible, and half of them are pretty good. The LCBP Cameo is a decent Bible for its price, and the CBP Turquoise is pretty good as well, considering how little I paid for it. I have an LCBP Scofield that was printed very unevenly. In places it's almost too faint to read. My LCBP Notetaker's shares the Schuyler's problem of skinny characters, but it also has glossy paper which isn't really thick enough for note taking.

I find that whenever it says *The Best MSS. Omit. that usually those lines are very important and what it really means is "Modern Translations often Omit ...." PS. By "Best" they mean the ones that were kept in best condition or rather the ones that were kept by the kings/queens etc not the people. in other words "best=worst" in my eyes. The R.L. Allan Longprimer 52 is very similar and just as great!
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 5 жыл бұрын
I sometimes think I would prefer the 52 over the 62, since it's a bit lighter and not as wide. The "best MSS." language is troubling, but I suspect it wasn't so controversial back in the late 40s/early 50s when Oxford was developing this edition of the Longprimer. My guess is that the editors equated "best MSS." with Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, and they thought just about everyone agreed with them. I haven't made my mind up on the textual issue yet (Critical vs Majority vs Textus Receptus), but I think something like "oldest extant uncials on vellum" would have been more accurate.
