Bruce Almighty (2003), directed by Tom Shadyac staring Jim Carrey tells the story of whiney news reporter Bruce Nolan as he is given the chance to step into God's shoes. Shadyac was given a chance to make a spin off with Evan Almighty (2007), Starring Steve Carell as Evan Baxter, a freshman US congressman who's life is turned upside down when God commands him to build an arc.
Here's my double feature review! One of these films, a disappointment. The other, a hidden gem that's deeper than you remember.

Let's be real, we'd all be like Bruce with those powers. Focusing on ourselves, getting money, fame, revenge, sex, whatever. A realistic Bruce Almighty story would be a mix of a porn movie and a horror movie, as we focus on our own pleasure, at the expense of everyone else. The people of this world are lucky they're in a lighthearted comedy without a higher age rating. Evan I've not seen in ages. I should rewatch it some time. From memory it's mostly fine if you go in with tempered expectations.

Well said! Evan Almighty was seemingly an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle after Bruce. So true that Bruce is not meant to be solid theological commentary, cool talking point for someone new to Christianity though!
