Less than a month after Italy threw her hat into the Axis ring, declaring war on Britain and France, the Italians faced the bitter taste of defeat. During the Battle of Taranto, the Regia Marina was eviscerated by an unprecedented aerial assault, leaving three battleships crippled and three other warships badly mauled.
Mussolini, seething and hungry for revenge, vowed to show the British who ruled the Mediterranean. He made a bold decision: deploy two of Italy’s most capable and modern battleships, Vittorio Veneto and Giulio Cesare, to hunt down the British aircraft carriers, HMS Ark Royal and Argus, along with their cruiser escorts.
However, British Intelligence had their finger on the pulse, detecting the Italian strike. The British carriers were ordered to retreat, and the Italian navy, buoyed by a newfound sense of pride, believed they were finally gaining ground in the Mediterranean. On November 27, another British convoy made a dash for Malta, and the Italian capital ships were dispatched again to intercept.
This time, though, the Royal Navy was ready. They knew exactly what was coming, and the Italians were steaming headlong into a carefully laid trap. The stage was set for the blistering Battle of Cape Spartivento.

One of the major issues facing the Italian Navy was the total disconnect between the Italian Navy & the Italian Air Force.

For the Regia Marina to get air support, they must call Naval HQ, who has to call Mussolini himself, who has to call the Luftwaffe to check if they're going to do something or not, then call Regia Aeronautica, who has to call the nearest airfield, before a plane can get into the air.

I've always had some issues with the content of this channel; often the titles are misleading and the information less than accurate. That said, it was the British air attack on the Italian navy in its home port at Taranto that was carefully studied and analysed by the Japanese when they were planning their attack on US warships at Pearl Harbor.

SOME issues? Specifically, Factual inaccuracy, images chosen at random, feverish narration and inaccurate titles, add up to amateurish videos. Admittedly, they are sometimes pretty funny, if only inadvertently.

Typical high level Italian leadership. Many Italian troops/sailors and Junior Officers were solid and had opportunity to win battles, but many of those general officers were spineless and squandered opportunities…especially the Naval commanders.

As often as I've read or heard about the Swordfish, I continue to be amazed that such seemingly obsolete biplanes could be SO deadly! Apparently, though, they were ideal for their mission . . . which suggests that the US Navy might have benefited from the use of some of these quirky little planes until such time as the USN received really effective dive bombers and torpedo bombers.
@recoil53
@recoil53 Ай бұрын
The US had better planes. They already had dive bombers and torpedo bombers with better speed. In the Pacific, where the Japanese had air cover, the Swordfish would be dead. Let's just say the Battle of Midway doesn't work out so well for the US Navy with Swordfish. In Europe the Swordfish wasn't hurt by it's low speed in making it's attack run, because a torpedo would be broken up if it was dropped when going over 100mph. But until that point, higher speed helps keep a plane alive. What the US was hurt by was bad torpedoes, but that's no reflection of the planes.
@teddywoo83
@teddywoo83 Ай бұрын
@@recoil53it’s true the US had better planes although I’m not sure what you had in 1939. It’s also true to say that the swordfish was the only aircraft able to take off from a flight deck in an Atlantic storm. The fact they not only did this but also had successful attacks and returned to land safely shows what durable aircraft they were
@recoil53
@recoil53 Ай бұрын
@@teddywoo83 The US already had Douglas Devastators. Whether or not a monowing would have been able to go after the Bismarck is neither here nor there. The OP though the Fairey Swordfish might have benefitted and the answer is clearly no. The issues really weren't with the aircraft.

Entertaining, but a bit of an AI mashup. I'm not really sure what the scenes of the Graf Spee being scuttled are doing here. Wrong ship, wrong navy, wrong ocean, wrong year, wrong action. Presumably many of the other clips which I don't recognise are similarly chosen at random. With a bit more diligence this could be so much better.

Disaster for Germany in two world wars, and certainly catastrophic for Italy in WWII. And to hear Italian naval strategy enjoying revisionist appreciation by some western maritime historians and strategists is very disquieting. Mahan was never a cure all, and he himself did not say decisive battles in themselves are cure all's... That aside, destroying the enemy battle fleet in open combat is the single most crucial component to winning a naval war-

It depends always about the degree of propaganda and the final winner. The Italians ddi roughly the same of Taranto, having organised a raid on Alexandria. All this silently and with a colossal saving of assets. Two battleships crippled and out of action for some crucial months.

They were expecting a more cautious approach from the Royal Navy. I think this was the beginning of the end for Mussolini. His real strength was his navy, even though it wasn't that great. Has anybody heard of any real effective heroes of WWII on the Italian side? They hadn't gotten the whole aircraft thing in sinc with the navy. Benito bit off more than he could chew early on in the war.
