What’s disgusting about that one is you’ll see reactionaries saying with conviction venomous nonsense like “[gay people] deserve to burn-” and then immediately follow that up with “-because they’re all mentally ill pedophiles.” Somehow the corpse of the euphemism is putrid and rotting and yet still alive and bloodthirsty as ever.

Let's just ignore teenagers making mistakes, abused children, r-ped women, broken condoms, human error, latex allergies, all of that. Let's completely ignore reality and live in philosophical la-la land where conditions are always perfect. Some people can't have children because of health conditions. So they abort. Some people develop a fetus with severe defects. So they abort. Some fetuses die in utero. So they abort. Some people are raped and don't want a child from that. So they abort. The laws are not making exclusions, so you are ignoring the fact that "closing their legs" won't help a child getting raped by their own father. It won't help a woman who needs a D&C because she is miscarrying but not passing everything and going septic. It won't help a mother who wanted her baby, but it died, but since she can't get a D&C then she is forced to face sepsis and hopefully doesn't die before going into natural labor. You are pro-rape. You are anti-science. Anti-human. Anti-intellect. Please LDAR. I completely mean it, too. The world would be better without you, and I wish your mother had been pro-choice.

@@call4523 Why the fuck do we want border security unless we are trying to secure our nation from brown people? Illegal immigrants provide more for the economy than they take, they pay property taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, and don't take a cent in government spending and they largely stay in urban environments with cultures similar to their own. There are literally no net negative consequences to illegal immigration as long as we have some semblance of a border, which we do. This leaves the left leaning person in the position of believing everyone who supports border security is either dumb as shit or a racist who just can't say they are a racist. Do you not support open borders? Neither does anyone on the left. Do you want illegal immigrants to be better registered to know who lives in our country? So does everyone on the left. Do you want illegal immigrants to pay taxes so that they aren't a drain on our economy? So does everyone on the left. Do you dislike that illegal immigrants can put pressures on native workers lowering wages and raising unemployment? So does the left, but our solution is much better to actually solving the problem. The only disagreement seems to be from rightists who fucking hate brown people and so they want less illegal immigrants. Why the FUCK would you want less workers in your economy if you could just redistribute the earnings unless you hated who the workers were?

Just a few days ago in France, a far right parliament member interrupted a black PM’s speech by telling him to "go back to Africa". The guy was kicked out of parliament (well, temporarily) and even the "moderate" right was outraged, but his entire party defended him… and I can’t help but be worried. This might be the signal that these guys no longer feel the need to hide their racism behind a polished image or a discourse about "spending power", and that we’re very close to our own Trump era.

What the French MP said was disputed. He said it was "they should go back to Africa (Qu'ils retournent en Afrique)", 'they' being the migrants that the black MP was talking about in his speech. This problem has to be fixed from the ground up. I teach middle schoolers, and I decided to talk about Letter from a Birmingham Jail as an example of persuasive writing, but they had no context. They didn’t know about church bombings in Birmingham, they didn’t understand what segregation meant, they didn’t understand that only 60 years ago, the diverse classroom they were sitting in was not only impossible, but illegal. Stalin invaded Ukraine in 1932 and murdered 7,000,000 people. He also murdered at least 20,000,000 Russians. And the USSR had something like 12,000 ICBM's pointed at us. It took me awhile to realize that my journey from a conservative to a progressive was something that not everyone can do. Trying to get this family member to watch this thing, or that friend to hear this speech, or that acquaintance to read that book. And not only being disappointed, but realizing that even if they knew a small slice of what I knew, they would not follow further. There's certain truths, certain points of view, certain ways of acting in this world, that I'm not going to say are unchangeable, but something that you have to be willing to destroy your entire life over. And many many many many moderates are not only not in a place to do that, not only not in a place to consider it, but not in a place to even understand that's a viable option.

"Silvermilk's" 1964 presidential campaign appealed to racism / white supremacy. MLK jr, Jackie Robinson, and many other black activists spoke out against him. I'll give him this much: if MLK jr and Jackie Robinson denounced "Silvermilk" in 1964, then 25-30 years later "Silvermilk" speaks out against the religious right and the republican party and supports pro-choice on abortion, then you know the Republican party has really lost it. "Silvermilk" literally told Bob Dole in 1996 that "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"

The right tried to turn slavery and segregation into a states rights issue and they fought tooth and nail to the point of splitting this country over the slavery thing. They tried to turn gay marriage into a states rights thing when they realized they couldn’t keep justifying their homophobia. The drug war is slowly moving from a blanket ban to a states rights issue, hopefully with some real schedule changes on their way. Also, physician assisted suicide and the death penalty are states rights issues for *god knows what* reason. But when the republicans slaughtered net neutrality, and the states tried to implement their own smaller versions of the policy? Did they fall to the defense of states’ rights then? Hell no. They snipped that one right in the bud

Since that region of Brasil is already really poor and can barely handle basic services for the existing communities, the fast influx of vezenuelans is seen by some locals as too much of a burden and protests have occured. As a Canadian I'm continuously confused by America. You act as if there is a "Liberal" element to your politics, however, your liberalism, is the liberalism of decades past. What Americans want today, is what other democracies have had for years. I fear your Cold War attitude has only exacerbated itself. Bernie Sanders is a good man, but his push is only significant in America. Universal healthcare is considered a staple of liberal democracies. It is so widely accepted, that our Conservatives (in Canada) refuse to touch the issue on a Federal level. To do so would be political suicide. Furthermore, aside from Canada, other nations have begun debating Universal Basic Income. Where does America enter in? Because for the rest of the world the American left remains a rather conservative mystery.
@cooperross9495
@cooperross9495 5 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a member of the American left...I know we're decades behind the rest of the developed world, but why do you have to rub it in!? But if you really want to know why America is so much more conservative than Canada and the like, I think it's for two reasons. One, a lot of Americans are just plain stubborn. The war that created the United States was basically just one giant act of stubbornness, and that attitude, that spirit still pervades our society. And two, the United States is one of the most diverse nations in the world. That's great in many ways, but it means that racists feel especially threatened and fight back against diversity that much harder. And less racist people are more likely to become racist, too. It's easy to be anti-racist when your country is so homogenous that there's no one to be racist against; putting tolerance into practice is harder.

States' Rights has always been a dodge. It's the last resort of legal scoundrels, who grasp at it, because they have no other leg to stand on. The pre-Civil War South had no problem with the federal government passing legislation such as the Fugitive Slave Act to force even abolitionist states to support slavery, but as soon as the tide starts to turn against slavery, suddenly they're in favor of limited federal government power. And like you said, we went through this with the Civil Rights movement. As soon as the national government starts overturning segregation and Jim Crow BS, suddenly the states that support all those things are like, "B-but States' Rights!" It showed up again in recent years. Regarding Gay Marriage, the argument oft heard was that it should be decided at the state level, let the citizens of a particular state vote on whether to allow Gay Couples to marry. But as soon as the population of states like Massachusetts and Vermont vote in favor of Gay Marriage, those opposed try to override their decision (or their States' Rights), by pursuing the Defense of Marriage Act at the national level. States' Rights is a BS argument. There's no way around it. Just as there's no way around the fact that even if you, as a fellow Republican, consider Trump's bigotry to be wrong, in not speaking up as loudly and as often as possible or even quitting the party if it matters so much to you, in staying silent, you lend tacit support to his ideas. Though it must never be forgotten that Trump lost the Popular Vote. The vast majority of the public wanted Hillary as president and the only reason he managed to squeak by with the Electoral College, was because of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Civil Rights Act of 1965, which forbade voter restrictions for all citizens and finally gave Blacks the rights due to them as citizens. Once that decision was overturned, then various states started trotting out voter restrictions, all of which seemed to target and disenfranchise Black voters, but I'm sure there's a totally not racist reason for it. It should be abundantly clear that the Electoral College is a profoundly undemocratic anachronism, a leftover of the Founding Fathers' Belief that the vote should only go to wealthy White men. We've jettisoned a lot of their ideas, but for some reason, the Electoral College endures. The Founding Fathers may have had a few good ideas, but they also saw women as property, believed that bleeding someone with leaches was a good idea, and they freakin' owned slaves.

The northern states had a constitutional obligation to return slaves to their owners. You may not like it, but that was their obligation under the constitution which they had agreed to. Naturally, when they disregarded their obligations and broke their agreement, the constitution was then null and void and those states which wanted to leave had every right to do so, even if their right to secede had not been explicitly guaranteed by the 10th amendment. @perrinbesch40
@perrinbesch40 5 жыл бұрын
Sabletwilight By that definition dog whistles are fairly ineffective if the message is hidden. No what i meant by my comment was that the left uses the term dog whistling enough that i am sure it has some double meaning or it just is an in joke between lefties. (not to say you are one) Sable when you say that republicans are dog whistling what exactly are they trying to hide. Take one of the examples from the video, the "War on Terror". Republicans are attempting to use fancy language, sure, but republicans don't hide it's true meaning. They want to handle a problem that they believe is only solvable through military might. It also happens that, that threat has a prominent religious ideology and that the vast majority of the members are brown. This is not republican law makers primary concern. They want to stop another 911 or whatever other threat may occur. The white christens who commit mass shootings are not motivated by any specific ideology and can't be as easily identified and prevented. Does this make them right? I don't know, but they have never attempted to hide the fact that they are trying to save their way of life.

The answer is yes Under federalism, power is split between the national level of government (Federal) and the state and local level of government. When federal and state laws conflict, the federal side reigns supreme (unless said federal law can be proven to be unconstitutional) but the federal government answers to many interests, and makes laws at a much slower pace, meaning that the states often have significant leeway in the laws they pass. Additionally, the federal government frequently lacks the political will to enforce *every* law or rule it has put in place, leading to situations where technically a state law might be in violation of federal law, but because the federal government declines to enforce (and thus conflict with state law) the state law stands. It is an imperfect system, but it offers distinct advantages over others.

The part about moderates using euphemisms so they don't have to admit their own bigotry to themselves is what got me. Before, a part of them suffered from cognitive dissonance - the inability to hold 2 opposite beliefs at the same time. The campaign of the president worked because he refused to substitute his bigotry with "non-racist reasoning". Therefore, he signaled to moderates that it's okay to think that way. He allowed them to take of their dog collars and inner restraints. You'll always vote for the guy who gives you a psychological feeling of freedom and affirmation.

Parental rights are a euphemism for "denying the individual rights of children". This isn't neccesarily bad, after all your toddlers bodily autonomy to drink bleach because it smells good is less important than your ability to violate their bodily autonomy to deny them a cup of bleach to keep them alive. It didn't help that, in a time when the American public still wants change, the Democrats nominated basically the most "establishment" candidate that they could. (And change is something that Trump promised in spades.) EDIT: When I say "establishment," I don't mean ideologically, I mean symbolically (which is arguably more important for most voters). She's been a prominent Democrat for decades, longer than many voters have been alive. It's basically impossible to know of her without being dead or under a rock for the past 20-30 years. Sanders, by contrast, was _far_ less prominent, with many people not hearing about him until he started promising Change as he prepared to run for a presidential nomination. It didn't help that many semi-disenfranchised voters on the Left (particularly Millennials) saw Clinton's nomination as confirmation of their belief that their votes didn't matter, while Trump's nomination was seen by their right-leaning counterparts as refutation of the same belief.

I view the 2016 election as a time when outsiders attempted to take over both parties; one party had fail safes to prevent outside take over, the other did not. This says nothing to do with his strength as a candidate mind you, and says more about how an independent has to tie themselves to one of the existing two parties to have a real chance of winning the presidency.

I disagree that Trump was such a big leap. As I see it, the Republican nominees, candidates, what you call them, were getting more and more extreme, less and less euphemistic, and Trump is just the next step in this line. It's not a sudden outburst of bitter racists, it's a party slowly adjusting its rhetoric to its voter base.

I agree he's the perfect culmination of their disgusting 40 year run. His cabinet proves it. His apologists and bag men prove it and his "base" prove it. Charlottesville proves it, Parkland proves it and Puerto Rico proves what kind of people they are.

I'm concerned we're going to see the same thing happening with the Democrats. Both sides are getting more and more vociferous in their rhetoric and becoming increasingly partisan. Democratic millennial voters are behaving as though even considering compromise with Republicans is a cardinal sin, and that's echoed on the Republican side. How does either party expect to get anything done, to govern the country effectively, without the opposition party's tacit support?

Davic Caper, What's happening in my opinion is that the rightwing are introducing racist, misogynist, xenophoboc, anti-LGBT talking points, and the progressives just accept their validity and try to argue with them in a moderate way. When Trump says: "We're gonna murder every Muslim in the world." The Democratic party says: "I demand that we have a federal oversight of the death squads, so that they won't violate the rights of US citizens, but I understand if the Republican party wil vote against it."

Don't worry. In a billion years the sun will have made human life on earth unlikely, and in five billion years it will have wiped out nearly all life on earth. And even if we've managed to spread to other planets and star systems by then, there's still the heat death of the universe to look forward to in around 10 trillion years or so, and then there will be no suffering, nobody to remember the suffering, and nothing at all will matter anymore.

It should. The most powerful nation in the world is led by someone that doesn't even need to pretend they're not all about active and systematic racism, as well as obviously not having any political integrity beyond that. They will happily sell major reforms to the highest bidder as long as they get to use the full might of the last super power to strike down the gays, the Mexicans and the Muslims, while happily enjoying their personal power to sexually assault women. The immediate threat that entire portions of the population are under cannot be overstated.

So, in school the one thing that stuck with me was the question, if you noticed these signs (of fascism) approaching, would you do something to stop it? But, I don't remember anyone really going over how to do that. And voting, and activism, et. al. But I'd still be really interested to watch some videos on the political climate that led to the 20 years of democratic party elections, or the New Deal, or whatever is most interesting to you. We the people need to have been taking action already and I'm afraid we are all way too asleep and caught off guard for any of that to be happening. Thank you for your work.

There's three major reasons why: 1. Belief that their actions effectively amount to nothing. People often complain that their votes don't matter, that the people that they vote for don't do what they promised, and even if they wanted someone else to be president, because of some system of representatives, suddenly the other person is now in office. It's created apathy for the system. Why fix something that refuses to work in the people's interest? They can't even be sure that the person they might vote for is actively telling them the truth, which could lead them to following some euphemism. (see reason 2). 2. Obliviousness. Not everyone is exactly aware of things, some might entirely be raised in environments where these euphemisms are known as their entire truth, and might never be given the opportunity to see other options. Plus with the apathy of the system (see reason 1), there are less and less non-biased places that cover information for the general people (see reason 3), it has to garner *their* interest for them to even give it a look. 3. Toxicity of the circles and spaces in which changes and discussions can be made. It is... sadly very likely that in any non-curated square of where such a debate can happen, that a person will either be ignored out of no one caring (see reason 1), or worse, being attacked by the groups of people who actively oppose, whether it be from obliviousness (see reason 2) or malice. It makes discussion rather hard to do in good faith, and more importantly, it leads to demonization and false representation that can overall ruin the intention of the discussion in the first place. The effort that it would take to make a change requires a large majority of people to actively be united by one primary interest, and for that interest to see through change. Sad part is, the only things that seem to do this are tied towards the massive harm and devastation of innocents in many cases before anything is done. So it's really up to us to shout into the air, and hope that they'll hear us.
