In this month's episode of Fabulous Folklore Presents, I'm thrilled to bring you a chat with Morgan Daimler!
Morgan is an independent folklorist who studies and writes about fairies in historic and modern folk belief. She has written a variety of books on the topic, as well as on Irish mythology, and is an amateur translator of old/middle Irish. Morgan has presented papers on fairies in folklore & fiction, fairies, gender, & sexuality, and fairies & witches for various universities and the Folklore Society.
In this chat, we talk about a range of different types of fairies, why fairies remain so popular, and what to do if you ever encounter a fairy!

Icy thank you for having the incomparable Morgan Daimler talk on a much misunderstood (yet wildly interesting) topic. What a generous and rich discussion!

This got me thinking about iron being protective against the Good Folk, and I did a bit of reading. I discovered that some folklore traditions regarded magnetic stones, i.e., lodestones, as protective against malign magic. Nothing specifically against Fairy especially, but I wonder if the electromagnetic properties of smartphones are also atropopaic in nature.

It would certainly be worth thinking about! Plus iron is also the metal associated with Mars, and while I'm not sure why he would specifically have an issue with the Fair Folk, he does usually pop up as a protective planet, and one charged with defence.

@@FabulousFolklore Mars, of course! Oh good, more research is needed 🤓 That will keep me out of trouble 😆

@@FabulousFolklore@FabulousFolklore I have done some digging and a lot more thinking, and one avenue that, perhaps, has some interesting, if tenuous, connections in astral traveling and Shamanic journeying. Using Astrology to decide when to do such traveling and bearing in mind the similarities to the Fairy Realm and the dangers therein, it might be wise to have Martial protection. However, I can find no instances of it in the records accessible to me, either in folklore or esoteric literature. I do get the feeling that there is a book plot there to be discovered, though. 🤓

i would argue there were "pygmies" all over europe (i think they´re called paleo-europeans now). it´s just if a cattle eating culture produces 180cm tall men, the hunter gatherers raised 150cm tall men. it´s the exact same scenario that happened in africa (how the bantus ran over the san people), here where i live in the north (sami people got ran over, very short) and everywhere else. it has not gone well for the little people!
