I still go to see Eric whenever he's in the area. Still has that amazing voice. Check out "It's My Life" & "We Gotta Get Outta This Place". This was from a UK movie. They made many movies with all the top artists of the time. They were part of the original British Invasion with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Zombies, Yardbirds, Dave Clark Five and so so many others. An incredible time to be alive back then.

Filmed in 1964, this is from Pop Gear (1965) which was shown in movie theaters to introduce US audiences to the British Invasion bands. The band is slow walking as if in a funeral procession which goes with the somber tone of the song.

It can't be that old (laughing); I remember when this song first released and was getting a ton of radio play. One of the 'great' rock classics that emerged from the 60s; Eric Burdon sings with the soul of a broken man who is 40 years older than he..

You need to react to the Yardbirds, The Zombies, and the Kinks! They have amazing songs! The Yardbirds have so many great songs like For Your Love, Heart Full of Soul, Shapes of Things, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, Evil Hearted You, Still I'm Sad, Train Kept Rollin, etc. (and they're actually the predecessors of Led Zep). The Kinks have Sunny Afternoon, You Really Got Me, and Lola. The Zombies have Time of the Season, She's Not There, and Tell Her No. The Zombies also have impressive use of organ solos in TOTS and SNT. And Keith Relf and Ray Davies are also very handsome men. And Jimmy was in the YBs and he was just as attractive as his Zep days! I love all of these songs.

The song itself is much older than 1964, as recorded versions date back to the 1930s, and is itself based on traditional songs going back a couple of hundred years. This version by The Animals is one of the best, and Eric Burdon’s vocals truly outstanding. There’s some great music from the 60s that I’m sure you’d love.

Also, their bassist, Chss Chandler, discovered Jimi Hendrix and brought him back to Englad to form the Jimi Hendrix experience, another reason I love the Amimals! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Great song from a great band. Lot's of great bands and great songs from that time period. The Animals also had many great songs, and if you react to more of them, I hope you find some live versions. There was a popular TV program called the Ed Sullivan Show, and many of the great bands from that time period did live performances on that show. The Animals had several appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, and performed some of their greatest songs live. Don't let Me be Misunderstood, We Gotta get Out of This Place, It's my Life, are a few of their other great songs. House of The Rising Sun was their top song and my favorite. I enjoyed your reaction and I'm glad you're looking into the lyrics.

FUN FACT: No one knows who wrote “House of the Rising Sun”. Because Eric Burdon and the Animals had such a massive hit with their recording of this song back in 1964, most people assume Eric Burdon wrote it. Fact is, no one knows who wrote it. Musicologists have tried to track down its origins but it's so old that its origins are lost in the murky mists of time. It may even go back all the way to 17th century England in a form that became known as "Broadside Ballads." If it did originate in England then it probably came to America via some ocean-going traveler who may have sung it here in the U.S. and then others picked it up and it slowly got passed around. Also, if it did originate in England, then someone had to have changed the location of the brothel from its location in England to New Orleans, probably to make the song more relevant to American audiences. That is all speculation, obviously, since no one knows for sure what the original lyrics were in that particular verse. Another interesting thing about the song is that in some versions it's about a man lamenting his experience in the brothel while in other versions it's a woman telling of her trials and tribulations at the brothel. I first heard it by folk singer, Joan Baez, a year or two before the Animals' released their version. In the Animals version the narrator is a man. In the Baez version the narrator is a woman. There is also a version of the song by the legendary folk singer, Huddie (Leadbelly) Leadbetter, that is so different (both melodically and lyrically) that it's barely recognizable as the same song. Another early rendition of the song was by Bob Dylan about 3 years before the Animals released their hit version. The oft-told story about Dylan "stealing" the song from folk/blues singer, Dave Van Ronk, is sort of true but also sort of not true. The "sort of true" part is that Dylan did first hear the song being performed by Van Ronk who wanted to record it. But Dylan included it on his own debut album (released in 1962) before Van Ronk got a chance to record it. The "sort of not true" part is that no one "owns" that song so you can't "steal" something that is not owned by anyone. And, as far as I'm aware, no one really knows where Van Ronk heard the song in the first place. Back in the '60s, a plethora of folk singers were all hanging around in coffee houses in New York's East Village where traditional folk songs were passed around and performed by anyone who wanted to sing them. People didn't have cell phones back then so there was no way to record a song on the spot. So, if some traveling folk-singer happened to hear a song somewhere and then moved on to another town and sang the song for another audience, the singer might not remember exactly how the lyrics went and would just make up new lyrics to fill in for the lyrics that he/she couldn't remember. This happened for decades (even hundreds of years in some cases) and that's why there are so many versions of old folk songs. Musicologists sometimes refer to this borrowing, changing, and adapting of a song as "the folk process".

I was 13 when this song was released. The reaction then was much the same as yours. But my friends and I felt that the song was originally about a young girl who becomes a prostitute. Many brothels in New Orleans were known as "house" - for example, Josie Arlington's Five-Dollar House. From 1897 to 1917, the New Orleans red-light district was called Storyville. Within that area, prostitution was legal by municipal order. The law was changed in 1917 because the United States was entering World War I that year, and thousands of soldiers were boarding ship to Europe in New Orleans. The city - still the second-busiest port in the world - was always a party town, as ports always are. The armed forces didn't want the recruits to contract sexually-transmitted illnesses, which would make some of them too ill to fight. So there went Storyville. The good thing that came from Storyville was jazz. The first jazz recording, as far as is known, was made in 1917. There were dancehalls and taverns everywhere, inside and outside Storyville, where at first the musicians played marches they converted to dance music and a style of piano music called ragtime, after composer Scott Joplin's first published piece, called "Original Rags." However, it must be said there is nothing particularly New Orleans about this song. A bit of Americana for you.

Well, to enjoy this, there must be a huge element of " the suspension of disbelief!" What we have here is an Englishman from the north of England acting out the role of a black American singer. Indeed, I'm convinced that history will not be kind to all those UK singers who sounded like black American singers ( complete with an American accent ), The blues should be about "the truth" and singing in a foreign accent is a long way from the truth. One could be kind, and view such vocal renderings as a sort of "homage" to the black American blues greats. Or, better still, as mentioned previously, think of Eric ( and Stevie, and Joe etc )as acting out the role of black American singers. And, like any good actor, they play their parts well, and convincingly. But, of course, we mustn't ever forget that they are merely playing a part. Now, B B King, for example, didn't act out the role of a black blues singer. He was a black American blues singer; however, in this song, Eric is, indeed, playing the part of a black American singer, and that was not be forgotten!

House of the Rising Sun is a classic which has been recorded by many, many artists but I believe this Animals version is considered by most as the best or most famous version. There is a nice hard rock version by the band Frijid Pink and artists are still recording it today. Canadian blue rock singer released a nice version on her last album and there is a great video of her performing it by herself on guitar and harmonica and even symbols for percussion on here boots. If I am not mistaken it's an old folk song and Madison changes the pronouns to feminine which is not usually done but I heard it was original written with feminine pronouns. Just a bit of trivia that I heard.

Heard they only did 1 take, lip synced, and what broke the guitar player was the organ being picked up and moved for the final shot

This ain’t Taylor Swift, sweetheart. This is real music. Cool video.

Taylor Swift has also made real music in the past. Maybe it would be better for you to grow up and learn to appreciate all kinds of music instead of being an old, nostalgic fart who insists that anything that came out after 1990 is trash. You know, you want young people to appreciate older music but you in turn cannot even name 3 Taylor Swift songs and still pass judgment on the quality of her music (you probably just don't like her because of political reasons anyway). I'm not even a Taylor Swift fan but pretending like she's never made real music is ridiculous and simply shows that your connection to music is solely a nostalgia trip, nothing more.
