Violet Evergarden is one of the best anime to watch, a prime example of how a clear and meaningful message can be developed within a plot that’s both exciting and deeply emotional. The anime follows Violet Evergarden's journey, a former soldier now without purpose at the end of the war; doubled down on by the death of Major Gilbert, the one person to show Violet care for her entire life. He leaves her with three simple words, “I love you.” Desperate to understand what those words mean, she takes on the full time work of an Auto Memories Doll, essentially girls who writes letters for others, with the intent to get the emotions that person is feeling across to someone else. Emotionally stunted, the titular girl at first struggles with this task, but over the course of the anime she witnesses love in many forms, and slowly becomes one of the best in her field. Her journey helps her discover what “I love you” means. Despite her unique situation, are we that much different from this young girl? We all start as she did, with no idea of love, and slowly form one through our own experience. Violet’s journey may not be one that’s specific and detached, but simply a case study of how we all grow and learn about love; one which gives some very important insights, highlighting just how confusing, but downright amazing, the mania of human emotions can be.
