One of the main reasons that I shoot full frame and medium format film is that I really enjoy the quality of the images and that I truly find that the heavier camera makes me focus more on my compositions. I am less likely to just “snap around” and personally I like that. 😊

That is fine, but the majority of people cannot afford such a camera. It is the photograph that matters, not the camera or the medium. You can slow down just the same with digital if you are serious about your photography. Also there are situations where a quick hand held shot turns out to be a real ‘keeper’ and that would be more difficult with film and a 4x5.

@@petercollins7848 I can’t afford a decent digital camera that has all the features I need in my film camera. Nikon f and Leica iiif with 35 and 50 for both was less than 1000$. Unfortunately no digital camera that produces decent images in that form factor and range finding capabilities is less than 2800$, minus the lenses. Cheaper for me to shoot film, process myself, print bw in the darkroom, send my color negs off for r4 printing when it’s something I like.

I moved from Olympus to Sony full frame High resolution. Low light and wildlife performance being the big issues. Love Olympus for ruggedness, features in camera (focus stacking) and weight, but IQ in low light and autofocus on wildlife with Sony are worth it to me. My gear upgrade absolutely changed my photography, full frame resolution and dynamic range open so many creative avenues.

I currently use Nikon D750s for my architectural commercial work as I needed a live view to work with a cam ranger system. But my D200 now 15 years old is just as good as the day I bought it. I use it for personal work, landscapes wildlife and cityscapes. Nobody has ever said "well that would have been a nice shot if it wasn't taken with that 12 megapixel camera." I am just grateful I don't have to deal with endless rolls of film anymore.

lol exactly. I just got an older (5Y old) DLSR, and those people would make you think that last year's model is horrendously old already, no idea what they'd say about 5y old tech.
@bfs5113
@bfs5113 3 жыл бұрын
It is very easy to understand. Most of these people are just describing their earliest camera collection or how they learned photography and many were the low end models. Similarly, many photographers who learn the craft using an SLR many decades ago, but without a motor drive/winder will call high fps, spray and pray. Because it isn't part of their experience to become a successful photographer. Give a LF 8x10 film camera to a photographer to shoot or learn photography will demonstrate what 'gear doesn't matter' means. It means the photographer has to have the necessary experience and mostly has to work harder with a camera with less features. If one looks at vintage photos of photographers carried their gear, then one may find tripod, incident meter, sand bags, flashes, bag with different lenses, etc. On the other hand, it is just one camera with a zoom lens nowadays. Most people ignore the fact that even their older or low end cameras may have some features that complement their skills. For instance, there is no need to prefect the skill of holding the camera steady, how to calculate flash GN, spotting/incident metering, etc. Therefore, even a newbie shooting in snow for the first time, will get an image with proper exposure using auto-bracketing (exposure and/or WB) at 30 fps.
@brianbeattyphotography
@brianbeattyphotography 3 жыл бұрын
@@bfs5113 all great points. While new tech certainly makes the technical aspects of learning much easier (new IBIS mirrorless vs. 8x10 large format film is a great comparison!), that doesn't necessarily meant that the photos will be compositionally better. At least this is something I've learned the hard way! Just because my older photo is technically sharp on my first entry level camera doesn't mean it was actually that good.

I laugh, or more often cry, when I see them buying vans costing in excess of £40000, just to travel and photograph the same sort of subjects that they were at their ' door step '. So much of the sameness, and now they have all jumped on to the film bandwagon ( most of them haven't got a clue, to be blunt, and pretend to use film as sort of proof of credibility ). Some of them make it look like money is no object, judging by the amount of rare and expensive film cameras and accessories that they had miraculously amassed in a flick of a finger. Surely the revenue from Y.T can not be so high, so there must be heavy sponsorship involved. One who shoots digital, declared one day, that from then on he was going to exercise ' visualisation '. He then readily went on to use the camera LCD to show the viewer how to visualise. When I pointed out that this was not visualisation, he got angry and replied that he did things his own way. The mind boggles.

Wise advice! Work with the strengths of your camera and avoid its weaknesses. Great cameras keep out of your way which is why the M3 Leica and the Hasselblad 500CM are great cameras and the RX100 is not (my worst buy). Photographers are persuaded that in order to take a decent shot you need the right equipment. Do you need to know your camera well? Steiglitz' Snow storm in 5th.Avenue and Steichen's Isadora Duncan at the Parthenon were both taken on borrowed cameras. A folding Retina is totally unsuited to Everest photography but the photo of Tenzing at the summit was taken with one. For wildlife Safari you need a silent shutter and long lens ? Nick Brandt's pictures were taken with the hardly silent Pentax 67 and many with the standard lens. A good photographer can take a great picture with any camera available.

such great points. some of my favorite photos were taken on my first DSLR. Yes, my newer setup will deliver better quality in the exact same situation, but it doesn't change the fundamental situation. It's so easy to get caught up in gear only discussions and pursuits, but focusing on light, location, etc. is much more impactful. Sports/wildlife depended fps could be an argument for improvements

Refreshing and timely. Today I read an article on a photography website which lauded the three newest and best cameras. Of course, the focus was all on technical elements of the gear and how incredible they were - and how many many thousands of dollars the body alone would cost. The article went on to basically bash other systems that weren't up to the job anymore. I'm really sick and tired of gear heads on website forums, KZfaq, and other social media channels. You can see it now with so many YT landscapers moving onto the "medium format" wagon - one by one because FF just isn't up to par anymore. Thank you for your timely post. Good to see you again.

Having the right gear is important, but that does not mean the latest or the most expensive. I do shoot both digital and film. Digital in APSC, FX and MFT formats ( they are all between 5 and 10 years old ), and film in all formats from 35mm to 4X5. I use them as I see fit or rather, depending on my own fitness, lol. I write two quotes from Ansel Adams. 1: The most important part of a camera is 12" behind it'. 2: There is nothing worse than a sharp photo of a fuzzy concept'. I think that old Ansel had figured it right.

Yes, every system, and each camera of each system, is good. Each has limitations, and photographer's limitations will be found in all systems. The "upgrade" word to buy new camera sometimes is just a pressure to buy something we might not need. The joy of taking photographs is possible with any camera. I don't remember discussing what camera was used when seeing a photo exhibition.

Well said , as I commented on a recent vlog by another pro photographer. It's not all about the gear it's the photographer, it helps but if you don't know what you are doing or how it works then top of the range gear won't matter at all. Having the fastest F1 car will not make you Lewis Hamilton, having top of the range golf equipment (and I have meet these guys ) won't make you tiger woods. Same with photography gear and I have meet a lot of these, won't make you Joe cornish. I was once told by a tutor technique practice practice practice technique, and the rest will come.

Back in 2014 I replaced my worn out Nikon D7000 and lenses with a Canon 7D mk ii, and later added a Canon 200D for video and loved both of them I was doing motorsports, corporate events, headshots, car meets, travel photos and other gigs. Last year when the pandemic hit most if not all of my work disappeared, I sold the Canon gear and bought a Sony a6600 with a 18-135 kit lens and I'm totally happy without all that extra weight to lug around I'm now doing Street-Urban and some landscape/nature photography that is for fun I like to take pictures on my occasional morning walks in our local botanic gardens. Gear does matter to a point, I prefer my camera to be weather sealed if possible you never know 😀 learning to compose, how light works and seeing the picture in your mind before you take it are far more important than the specs of the camera. When you get down to it nowadays mobile phones take amazing pictures( I admit I use my phone a lot for photos) but I enjoy using a camera and the editing process of seeing what images I captured good and bad I learn from all it. and why do so many of those KZfaqrs have clips of them making coffee😆

I was in a horrid slump. My images just didn’t have anything to make them special. They looked like one of a 1000 others that looked the same. I asked a well know and respected photographer friend what to do as I was lost. He told me toss my kit in the bin for a bit. .. a year. He told me to shot a lot... with my iPhone. Everyday in fact of anything that caught my eye. It was very hard at first. However over time the limitations I embraced. They are hyper focal... what can I do with that. ? No long lens ? Get closer and use different angles. Learn to look up at things. That was my biggest takeaway. That interesting building? Go inside and get high in the building and shoot down. One of my favorites is a a image of all the people looking up taking a picture of the building. After the year my kit was lighter and has changed for the better. I still use the iPhone a lot as well. The lens and image quality is very good if the light works and it gives the image a difference feel. So yes I agree. It’s not the gear.

Your respected friend just directs you to spend more time in the Art of Seeing than pressing the shutter. Back then, we poor film photographers just said 'Click' whenever we saw a good photo ops. Even with an iPhone, GIGO still happened. Since everything you described happened to SLR photographers back then, and yet many remained as an average photographer. Art and science are two different things. We old timers can call the iPhone an unnecessary and expensive device, just as many arguing about the latest with their (old) cameras. Hence, I believe "Do I look stupid to you?" not to use the latest that one has to work harder, more than "Gear doesn't matter". 🙂

Great to have you back Craig. Especially looking forward to some on location videos soon, find them really inspirational. And yes, gear does contribute nothing to the feel and look of an image. A good photo will be a good photo, no matter the camera it was taken with. But gear is affecting the quality of an image, something that became very important to me in the past few years. I just love detail and going close to big prints. Some moments are once in a lifetime events and I have some images I wish were taken with „better“ gear. I shot with every sensor size out there, m43, APS-C, FF and now MF. And no, I don‘t have 10 reasons for it, just this single one. But it is so important to me that it is worth the extra cost, size and weight ;-)

its a great topic - I do have a personal problem where I do love and want to continue to shoot fujifilm - though I fear that i wont be hirable to other clients who might expect to see full frame or brands like canon or sony. Another factor that im taking in to consideration is the kinds of brands my piers are using currently and if I were to collaborate and work in a team it would be best for everyone in that team to use the same brand. Not upgrading but lets say Changing is a better word for it - Im not changing any time soon but its certainly the thoughts im consideration right now. - after recommending fuji to a friend who went in to journalism and have been shooting for over a year - now is planning to move to canon as well due to many of the other photographers in the scene are using canon and faster speeds its able to achieve.

@@TL-xw6fh I know - my only concern is to be hired. Im fine with Fuji and have many work arounds to get the best shot but will the client still hire me for using a different brand. or is this one of those false ideas online - and someone with a good portfolio will get any client to come regardless of gear?
@EdwardMartinsPhotography

@@JayGrapherTh There will be just as many (or more) "workarounds" with any other camera brand you use. In my experience your insecurity about what the client will think is on you, not the client. The client will hire you or not based on your portfolio, not what's in your camera bag. You are doing exactly the opposite of what Craigs point was in the video: focusing on the gear, not your art. It's tough but try to get your brain to relax and make art, and stop worrying, be happy. :)

Well now, those of us who have been taking photographs since the 1960s would like to point out that no gear we had then could match a modern mirrorless DSLR that shoots movies and stills and everything in between and exports that not on film but on digits that can be so manipulated as to "paint over" the entire image with something post produced. Dig? That ain't "dodging and burning".
