Drop dead easy to replace moisture in any type of tobacco that has dried out. Simply take one of those Ball Jars, tape or glue a small piece of spunge to the top, put a couple/three drops of distilled water on the piece of sponge, put tobacco in the jar, place the top/lid back onto the jar, check in a day or two and see that the moisture has been replace and the tobacco is as good as it was before it dried out. Check it out! Thanks for your videos! Hope this helps!

I have a giant bag of Boswell's Northwoods from years ago. I'm afraid that it might be a bad idea to try and bring it back to life. Does tobacco get mold or something like that, is it safe?

I'm soaking in all the information, mutton chop. You're one of the best and one of the first pipe mentors for me haha. Great. Yep. Need a jar.... To store tobacco. If opened tin/jar. I only smoke once or twice a week, depends. Not addicted to nicotine. Just to relax. That also lets me age tobacco somewhat :) happy smoking man.
@MuttnchopPiper5 жыл бұрын
Lycosa - it’s rare that people get addicted to smoking a pipe, the nicotine level is a lot lower then cigarettes. And yes if you only smoke a couple of times a week, you definitely need to store tobacco you have opened in a canning jar. 👍👍👍

@@MuttnchopPiper I am used to cigars, yep. Already smoked about 60 different cigars I'd say. Never been addicted to nicotine, never used cigarettes or snus regularly. Only cigars now and then but pipe is cheaper and seems great, will give it a try :). Yep

Lots of excellent information here. I came back to this video because i got two surprises today, one bad, one good: i discovered that a good tobacco i like was smelling bad and kinda after some months in the pack, while another was perfectly normal after even more months but in a well-sealed jar. Good evening sir, I just wanted to express how much I enjoy your videos and how informative they are from a new smoker’s perspective. I recently purchased my first pipe (a Dr. Grabow Tobacco Pipe, Royal Duke Large Bulldog). In recalling the video where you went over your pipe selection you mentioned you had certain pipes for aromatics and some for say Virginian tobacco. I wanted to know if there is a certain type of pipe that smokes aromatics “better”; say “cooler” than other types. Lastly, I also watched the video you made on filters and wanted to know if the Dr. Grabow Tobacco PipeRoyal Duke Large Bulldog accepts the 9mm filters you talked about? Again thank you so much

I have been looking at the various ways of storing tobacco and want to add my two pence worth - i have just received 24 oz in 2 tins of Captain Black Cherry from USA ( I’m in UK) One tin I’m going to leave alone the other i want to split up. I like the idea of vacuum food bags which seem to be generally well reviewed and the vacuum mason jars. The negative of the food bags from some of the experts ; was while its ok for food some of the tasty tobacco molecules slip through the plastic. I have had the idea to wrap the tobacco in foil then put the pouch into the food vacuum gadget and seal it. I would welcome your, and the communities views on the pros and cons I like watching your videos and your reviews of tobacco - i wish it was easier to get some of your recommendations in UK - import fees are mad and hope Brexit, Jonson and Trump (perhaps unfortunately named for the more immature mind) can work some magic

I found a nice way to control moisture which cigar aficionados likely will know already: ask your tobacconist for boveda humidipaks. I believe G.L. Pease made some recommendations which you can find online but I found that the 58% to 69% range is good for pipe tobacco (in conjunction with an appropriate sealable container ofc).

Question: If I open a tin of tobacco, do you guys store the tobacco in the actual opened tin itself, or dump it out into a jar and throw the tin away? The reason I ask is I was going to try a few different aromatics, having a glass ball jar for every different type of tobacco seems unrealistic so I was going to try and see what options I would have. Say I bought 10 different aromatics to try to start, I opene a few to try, how would you store the differnet aromatics after breaking the seal?

Another advantage to buying huge quantities of your favorite tobacco is it's cheaper since you won't have to pay inflated prices in the future and the best part is, when that brand or line discontinues, you can ration it out for a long time or even sell it at a premium price. Heck I'd pay fifty bucks for an ounce of true Syrian Latakia

@animvm18974 жыл бұрын
I've heard that those don't work well for pipe tobacco since it already contains all the moisture it needs and just has to be kept that way, unlike cigars which age well in a humidor and can benefit from the wood. Coming from cigars too so I've considered that as well.

Been using canning jars for years for storage of everything from food to tobacco. The screw portion of the "lid assembly " is referred to as the ring, the part in the middle is called the seal which has the rubber seal. I usually reuse the seal from a food canning session since it cannot be reused for food so I use it for tobacco or other goods. Vacuum sealing is not good using the type of lids that have a dedicated one way valve. When you draw out the air you are also drawing out the moisture. I do have a question, can you use a humidification system to maintain proper moisture levels within pipe tobacco? I use a 50/50 mix of propylene glycol and distilled water for my cigars. I have recently checked my stash of tobacco for my pipe that I put away ten years ago. I found the plastic tub that was supplied by the tobacconist had developed several cracks in it. I placed this humidification mix on a pad on top of the tobacco isolated with plastic, so far so good but it has developed a bite.
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
No. I tried using a humidification system with pipe tobacco, and I ended up with moldy tobacco, so for me I never use a humidification system when it comes to pipe tobacco. you might have better luck. :) :) :)

Hi Muttnchop Piper, Do you recommend a hydrastone for keeping tobacco fresh when storing tobacco? I had been keeping a leaf shaped hydrastone in some opened tins with plastic lids. It seems to work ok. In a canning jar would it keep it too moist? Is there a danger to this? I was wondering if a hydrastone would create mold, or alternatively, if it might actually dry out the tobacco by drawing too moisture out? I am currently using one in the shape of leaf and, as I am beginning to use canning jars, I don't know if I should pop a leaf in each Ball jar or if this is not recommended.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Alanna Regan - I don't have that much experience with hydrastones, but if you're switching everything over to canning jars, it's unnecessary, plus it kind of defeats the purpose, canning jars will seal themselves after a couple of days keeping the tobacco a the perfect hydration for the most part. It's Human nature to check things, so you may be tempted to open the jar after a month and check the stone, well, you have broken the seal, and the jar now has to reseal itself. Hydrastones are good I guess for temporary use, but not long term storage. 👍👍👍

From my understanding not all tins are created equal and some seals get compromised during storage. Would it be A good idea to vacuum seal the tins for a extra layer of protection? I'm ignorant on the subject of mason jars i doubt there is one large enough to simply place the tins in is there?
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
william cryts - yes, that you can do, and your right some tins are compromised by not having good seals, so as an added layer of assurance, vacuumed sealing wouldn't be a bad idea. 👍👍👍

@tastytobacco96926 жыл бұрын
Hey muttonchop piper, I’ve been doing a lot of research on this and I have a few questions. What’s your sanitization process for the jars before you stuff tobacco in them? Have you switched to a different blend for the jar and noticed the rubber seal being ghosted by the previous blend, or do you just use new lids? Last question, for long term storage let’s say 10 years, do you use the canning food process and place tobacco in the jars while they’re boiling in water?
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
Outlaw Piper - I put the jars in my dishwasher which reaches a sanitizing heat, once out of the dishwasher, I dry them with a rag that has been sanitized. Then put them in a large closed card board box to air dry for 3 days, the lids go through the same process. then I load tobacco in the jars. If I decide to replace the current tobacco with a new tobacco the jar goes through the same process before the new tobacco goes in the jar. That eliminates the ghosting issue. No I do not use the canning food process when cellaring my tobacco, I have found over time usually 2 weeks the jars seal themselves. 👍👍👍
@anthonybakker25674 жыл бұрын
So, if I am using one of these jars, no need for a boveda pack to preserve proper humidity? Also, do you need to create the vacuum seal, or just tighten firmly? Many thanks from a new piper.
@thesheetdoctor80204 жыл бұрын
If I pick up a tin or bag of tobacco that has a bit more moisture than the average bag I usually just throw it in a small mason jar. That way over time it dries accordingly as you open and close the jar. It’s hard to explain but it works. I usually don’t vacuum seal mine.
@rustyshackleford63416 жыл бұрын
Muttnchop Piper! Another good video. I had a question if I should use a descent in the jars to maintain the right moister in the tobacco. I have such a device in my humidifier for my cigars. Is this something I should look into?
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
Malarkey07 - I would not recommend that, it could possibly dry out the tobacco to much, if you put the tobacco in the jar and keep the jar in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight, it should be fine. 👍👍👍

Hunter Hughes - my jar reads 12 oz. 👍👍👍

When you talk about travelling are you referring to by car or by plane? Or both? I am wondering with security the way it is now at airports, what to do when traveling with pipe and tobacco by plane.

Jon Macklin - it's mainly by car, I rarely travel by plane so I'm not sure what the rules are, my suggestion is to call the airport before you fly and see if you can talk to a TSA agent to find out what the rules are for pipes, and any pipe accessories you want to take with you. 🎃🎃🎃
