William Emanuel "Billy" Cobham, arguably the epitome of the fusion drummer, is an American composer, bandleader, and educator with an extensive list of accomplishments - and we are so honored to have been able to host him in our studio.
Having inspired drummers such as Carter Beauford and Dennis Chambers, Billy is one of the most influential drummers in history. You don't want to miss this lesson where he breaks down the fundamentals and nuances of creating a tight rhythm section in music.

Watching him drop his stick at 2:29 made me feel so good because I drop my sticks all the time... Even after decades of being a professional, you're gonna drop sticks. The key is learning how to not let it make you skip a beat. Billy Cobham is a master.

Adam Newbern...I noticed that myself. But he kept his left hand going, staying right in the pocket, until he pulled out another stick, and got right back in the groove, not missing a beat! AMAZING drummer!!

Steve Pruitt chided me about dropping sticks. .He'd rather see that and me be that relaxed, than choke the sticks through a whole performance being tense.

@@johnbreedlove3245 geez, that's such an amateur approach. There's no need to talk to someone severely for dropped sticks. Everyone drops them. I've seen Carter Beauford doing that multiple times as well.

Only time i drop sticks is if i get hooked on something, or if I’ve been eating chicken wings or something and didn’t wash well. Orange peels require a crazy amount of scrubbing thanks to that oil in the peel, alcohol pads work best. Worst time for me was when i ate at the venue before the set then someone bails and the whole rest of the show slides up a time slot. *Eat before you go and after you preform and wash well. If you drop a lot, consider going back a little in your fundamentals. JoJo Myer has some great exos. In “Secret Weapons for the Modern Dummer” i’m telling you your grip can improve with out all that tension or any other non-sense. I’ve been playing for about 15 years, you never stop practicing the fundamentals, if you do you’ll be upset by the results. When it come to practice and sharpening you tools, nothing can be below you.

I'd occasionally break a stick at the tip. (I used 5 A's). I might miss a beat, but the stick sack on the bass was darn handy!! One time my stick broke, the tip flew off and landed in my glass of water next to my drummers thrown. What are the odds?

I'm proud of the fact that a long time ago (must have been the 70s or 80s) I was once allowed to carry his drums from the truck onto the stage and help set them up. At that time I worked as a local roady for a concert agency in Frankfurt. I even still have an original stick from that time, played by him, with traces of the hits on the crash cymbals.

One of the most important and influential bands in the 70s and in the area of the fusion genre that Billy played with was not mentioned, The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Billy was doing this kind of ambidextrous stuff first off that i can remember back in the late seventies with a song called "Joe Frazer". Great conversation with Billy Cobham. He is one of the giants of the instrument who shaped the way we play today. Also a brilliant example of how we get more conscious of music and playing for the situation as we get older. I had the fortune of meeting Billy many years ago when he unexpectedly walked in to a club in Oslo, Norway where I was playing to check out our bass player who later played and recorded with him. He sat down at the closest table to the stage right below my hi hat smoking a big, fat cigar. Legend!

I won't respond to the trolling comment, since you're ignorant of what bands Billy has played with. Mahavishnu Orchestra was a pretty amazing group that he was the drummer for. Look them up.

Heeeeyyyy there, guys. I think I've already left a comment like this before. Drumeo, you guys are doing great work. The list of drummers you've had on the channel now is absolutely world-class. You've achieved a lot. Serious props. Now I really think the next step is improving how you host your segments and how you interact with the artists/clinicians while they present their stuff. Like, I'm sorry, call me old school, but, if during one of these presentations Billy Cobham is looking at you and talking to you directly about a drumming idea and you're looking at a laptop, pressing keys n' stuff, we have a problem. I know no disrespect is ever intended, but it looks pretty bad to me. I know it's probably the nature of the interactive service you're providing to your audience and how Drumeo got started, but maybe have someone else manning computers n stuff while these music veterans are taking to you. I'm not saying you guys should turn into cheesy, super-slick tv host-type guys or anything, just maybe sharpen some of that stuff up a little. Use a little more etiquette, just like you would in everyday life, and maybe prepare for how you're going to present each artist to your audience a little more. Anway, just some thoughts. I'm actually leaving this comment because I LIKE what you do.

Very simple, easy to follow, no technical show, no self-satisfaction effort. I am sure he can stroke 10 times a sec, but he doesn't. Pure and perfect groove! Perfect like a drum machine.

Second that! Sharing & caring with passion & compassion in percussion, 7/8 'til late, and still.. a living legend !!! From 'Spectrum' and beyond, you inspired me, in the UK, to melodisize and roll the drums trying different timings and off beats and louder and softer and to just.. play ... Thank you Billy!.. and long may you reign! : )))
