Man, this is seriously amazing. I can't believe how little views all of Patrick King's content has. He has propelled me from super awkward to being able to have such free flowing conversations and feeling good about it.

I wish conversations could be a little slower paced with more contemplation, that’s more my style. But most people like there to be no silences and just constant talking which overwhelms me because I’m not great at keeping up.

You are correct. Many people think the nonstop back and forth is a converstaion, when it is really often just two people waiting for their chance to tell a story and not paying attention to the other.

it's better to participate in conversations on your own terms and let go of ones that are contrived and inauthentic, than to follow a norm that's painful for you. You'd be surprised how many people respond positively to this.

This is practical for many situations but I much prefer authenticity to controlling the "flow". That's in a way ironic. I already use these skills but I don't like to force anything, if we jive we jive, if it's awkward most often it's because that's the natural dynamic between the two, forcing it to be a certain way only hides that truth and even if for the moment it feels good, eventually both realize the dynamic as it really is. When you feel awkward ask yourself is the disconnection or silence by itself awkward, or because you/social norms make a judgement about it? Disconnection and silence is natural and as it should be, it's not awkward, it's thinking that makes it awkward. Yes you can always make efforts to connect on some level which has its time and place, but overall I never want to force anything, if it dies let it be. With that said I enjoy picking people's brains and wonder about their inner worlds and how they're wired, so I naturally ask questions, and enjoy conversations on my own terms. I can be very conversational and very quiet.

This video's content is kind of manipulative, it talks a lot more about how you look to the other person and reducing silence than actually connecting with the other person. The tactics described are alright, but seem to miss the point.

Shockingly bad book! It is bone dry, has not an iota of wit, and panders common place etiquette as sagacious advice. Twenty minutes in, not a single witticism. Just knucklehead self-evident advice of don't ask in absolutes, mirror emotions, etc. The self-help book genre is full of shysters preying on the urge of people to better them self. This book represents the dregs of that genre.
