Great video Mike. I'd say do the 5 lug swap, it opens up a world of wheels.

Yup. As a MK1 VW Pickup owner with 4x100 I am thinking about going to 5x100 due to the lack of wheel options.

5x112 is the way to go on a Quattro. There are some decent options in 4x108 but it's nowhere near as versatile as 5 lug.

If you're doing much work on VW/Audi cars, it's worth buying a decent set of triple square sockets. It's a pain trying to find the right size when you unexpectedly need one, and as you've already found out, you *will* need them!

Be aware, the rear differential of the Coupe Quattro has a different ratio then the one from the Urquattro, so you can't mix the drive train. A good break option are the Brembo brakes from a Seat Leon Cupra 2005-2012 (Serie 2), and yes, Audi just turned a front axle 180 degree and used it as a rear one.

Woohoo, an Audi video again! Glad to see you're making progress on it and that it'll be a relatively simple swap since the subframes are the same part. Also glad to see you brought the pointer back, I've been missing it.

4x108 was common in Europe during the 80's. Ford UK was the biggest adopter of that bolt pattern. Corrina's, Capri's, Escorts, Sierras (Merkurs) and a few others all used it. New wheels can still be bought, but they are getting less common.
@CorradoAlley
@CorradoAlley Жыл бұрын
Since those are Girling 60 dual piston calipers that Corrado VR6 and G60 guys use then you can use Porsche Boxster 986 front calipers with mk4 VW adapters with 1/4 spacers. The VW guys use Audi TT/VW 312mm rotors. That said I'm certain you will probably come up with a more exotic combo.
@nakedbandit
@nakedbandit Жыл бұрын
Came to say the same. The old G60 calipers are often used on Westy's as a budget big brake kit for those too, so you can usually find someone that wants them too.
@nakedbandit
@nakedbandit Жыл бұрын
Also, the 993TT calipers with RS2 brackets and A8 rotors was a fairly well documented big brake kit on the UrS4 and UrS6 cars, so those would bolt up to the front struts from Scotto's coupe quattro.
@Zermattquattro
@Zermattquattro Жыл бұрын
I installed Boxster monoblock calipers to my UR quattro along with a custom caliper mount and turned down the diameter of an A8 vented front disc as I wanted to run the original R8 Ronals alloys rather than swap out to an larger alternative alloy wheel. It was a popular brake upgrade in the UK 10 years ago.

Regarding the Front wheel bearings and their correct removal ...Usually, you do what you did and press the Drive Flange out(away from the CV joint per se) of the bearing, then you look for a large retaining circlip on the CV joint side which you remove. Then turn the Knuckle over on the press bed, and apply force from the Brake rotor side inward(towards the CV joint per se). This is the case with most cars that I have worked on. Have a look into this if you haven't already figured out the correct removal process. Good luck!
@Keutain

I would provide him the same advice! I'm always removing my bearing from outside to inside on all the VAG car I had to do it ;-) After removing the clip inside at the CV joint side of course!!
@danielcgomez

@@Keutain it would make sense ...if it would come out the way he was pressing it, then what to keep the entire wheel assembly in place? Close tolerance press-fit alone? Can't have wheel assemblies parting ways with the car!

I am really liking this Audi build topic. It's fun to see the discoveries you find along the way during the "dismembering" process. I am amazed that you are able to remember how everything goes back together when you disassemble so many items all at once on a car you have not worked on before. All of your projects are interesting to me, and it is informative to see your methodical processes you follow as you move from one to another. This is by far my favorite subscription going back to the beginning of the Honda powered Ferrari build. Thanks for putting so much craftsmanship into sharing your experiences.

I am very happy your working on a 1984-5 Audi Quatro AWD 5 Cylinder Turbo. "THIS WAS MY DREAM CAR WHEN I WAS 17-18 YEARS OLD!" I went looking for one in Conneticut, U.S.A. off the I 95 Intetstate Highway. I found the Dealership, but BMW Dealership stopped selling Audi😪. Instead I did find Jay Leno at the Repair Garage when he was still a machanic / slash / Comedian two days before he appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Good memories! Good info update video!

about the wheel bearing removal: Im not sure about the B4, but my C4 UrS6 (very similar suspension assembly) wheel bearings had some C-clips in front of them that were so rusted in place that I could not tell that they were there. Might be worth verifying there's no C-clip so rusted in place that it just looks like a part of the knuckle.

Gripper LSD from the UK for your rear LSD. I can highly recommend them as they're plate type LSD's not wishy washy torsen types. You've gotta change to 5 stud hubs from the S2 (This is 5 x 112). The axles are stronger, with appropriately larger spline sizes too.

No that strut bolt is not backwards. It’s “engineered” that was so that if it comes loose it will be retained instead of falling out and having a catastrophic failure. Working on it is inconvenient and probably also “engineered” that way for dealer maintenance profits!

My 1994 S2 was the first car I did any repair / upgrade work on myself. I must say that control arm and strut removal from the subframe off the car looks much more straightforward than doing so on axle stands in a driveway. Glad I wasn’t the only one who struggled with the control arm bushings :) you can pull them out with a home made tool consisting of threaded rod , socket, nuts, washers. Get a tough piece of rod. Rear diff options - the Audi V8 / 5000 diff internals are a direct swap. If you can find one being wrecked grab the diff (the diff housing doesn’t fit - you just want the internals) - it’s torsen the same as the centre not technically LSD but a great upgrade (and you do away with the vacuum lock thing) - my first track outing with the S2 and upgraded rear diff - overateer coming out of turn 4 at Phillip Island - one of the best things I did to the car

Not sure if its applicable for this car, but it looks like it would work. instead of getting a knuckle spreader, you can rethread the bolt from the other direction so it starts threading right away, and shove a piece of metal in the gap so the bolt cannot go into the other hole and presses the pieces apart. you really dont need more separation and this trick can be used on anything that has a smooth bore on one side and a threaded receiving end.

At 5:48...you never need any "spreader-tool" to get that apart, just remove the bolt and push on the upper part of the ball joint and it will go down. It is the bolt that runs in the groove in the ball joint that keeps it all together along with some clamping force but as long as the bolt is there it can never come loose. Also, the outer races of the wheel bearing can be a bit tricky to remove, I always weld a seam with my mig-welder around the whole outer race and then press it out with a hydraulic press. When they finally let go it will sound like a gun shot! The intense heat of welding helps it alot. Inner race I just cut with a grinder (carefully) and break it with a chisel. Anyway, it´s always nice to see old Audi content, best of luck with the build! // Daniel from Sweden (200tq 20v daily driver 2008 to infinity, owned many of these) :)
