Today we are exploring the most shocking examples of performance art and focusing on Marina Abramović’s famous experiment ‘Rhythm 0’. In 1974 in Italy, Marina allowed the audience to do whatever they wanted to her, and the results were shocking.

I think making this a sexist issue is unfounded since there was not a male equivalent experiment so we don't know if it would have been more brutal because people have less empathy for men than women that's why people save the women and children first and don't like when women are hurt but male pain is entertaining, that's why the bad guys and henchmen in movies are male because people generally don't like seeing women being harmed, at the end men are the disposable s*x.

It never cease to impress me how people keep getting surprised about violence of humanity. Humans are inherently "evil"(like anything in nature. Prolonging life requires sacrifice of another life (eating plants or animals). Only through nurture, discipline, morality and systems of praise and punishment humans become "good"(much less aggressive). But the primitive part is still remains (though in different degrees from person to person)

Lots of men think that if a woman doesn’t “obey the rules” or puts herself in a vulnerable situation that she is fair game, if men hurt her. It doesn’t occur to them that they do not have to harm her. They think that they’re bound to protect a woman who behaves and harm women who don’t. It’s not okay.

There is just a section of men who are dangerous by having their wiring on some level screwed and it's just more about that. Like most violent crimes are done by men but then again it's the same section who does them again and again more often than not. Yes you can rehibilitate most since surroundings are so big part of where your headspace ends up, so any men can grow up skewed (as can anyone), but then there is even the smaller amount who are just that low end of having any feelings that the psychopaty mixed with bad outcome makes them so opportunistic that you cannot really control them. Even they cannot control themselves and can justify whatever to themselves and really even doesn't need to for not feeling quilt. When men who have done something messed up to a woman and shifts the blame it's either for not being able to take the blame or they just don't care. It is quite that simple. It is not really as much about does women obey atleast by my experiences and from what I've talked with other men. You who are not doing messed up stuff are almost like one separate group and none likes the ones who hurt women. Like often men correct the one man they know who have hurt a woman by hurting that man. Like when you are a man and from the easily more common place of having your morality together. You do so much of this thing of checking other guys if they seem dangerous and how they are for example coming onto a woman in your group and if she seems uncomfortable. It doesn't really matter how you are dressed or "obey" but if you are a normal guy for the most part firstly for you comes your immidiate people and for example I have had to been in a fights and just general telling someone to blabla off because they have not understood when to stop or gone over some line with a woman who is in our group or just see something so clear even if you don't know the people. To me it seems just very built in just in general without some caviats to it of obeying. Like I have an example where you could say someone didn't "obey" but that's not what is the thing. Once I was like lightly drunk walking home and like edge of the city centrum at the bus-stop was like a teenage girl lying on the ground passed out and I see like two couples just walking by her.. so I go waking her up and ask which bus she needs to get into/what is happening/I think we should get you up and sort this thing out. So she wakes up and is waasted, crying how her friends left her alone and she is from like a neighbouring smaller city and said to me, it was that she is 15 or 16 years old. Couldn't/wouldn't try to get up so I'm like thinking what can I do to get her home safe without calling cops because that would just be a bigger scene for her. So I ask her if there is someone she knows and trust who can pick her up and she says like this some guys name and that they Might be just driving around with friends so I get her phone and call to this dude and he basically just wants to know what's going on, says they will come and get her and thanks for looking out. I was like 25 or something so now I just look like a weard guy standing beside a sleeping teenage girl on the ground waiting for the car to come 😂 So one guy then again comes to me like what is happening here and I explain the situation and say I'm just waiting for the pick up to see what kinda guys are even coming to get her. He's really cool about it and stays with me waiting, I think he might've been initially just not knowing if I'm lying but we level really fast and talk like 30min while waiting for her to get picked up. Come along really well, it turned more so so I don't have to wait by myself. Then when they come the guy seems aight, there is also girls in the car, I ask the wasted girl if the guy is the one and she is like yes and stumbles to the car. They clearly knew each other, like both of us waiting got an ok feeling of her just going with them. We talked with the driver a bit and he seemed ok guy and was thanking again about handling it. So that's like 40-50min for me to get her home and I truly didn't mind because someone had to take care of it before some creep comes. It's still one of those things I as a man Felt I Need to do because she is a woman in not at all in a smart or safe situation. I do think easily most men lean on that side, of handling it or not doing anything. Since there was propably pretty quickly two guys taking care that it's ok and third driving her. It's wayway more propable a normal guy like that comes first before the one who will use the situation in a bad way no matter if she put herself into it or not or Whatever that case is. It just also is that when you do an exhibition like this it will almost attract the odd ones out that will do something messed up when the word to mouth goes around the streets. I'm not saying that's her fault what they did do to her but that it's more so how I see it most likely worked. So in my mind it doesn't neccesarily give like a very straight-forward answers to you how men think of women and what men think is ok to do and when.

The walk was actually going to be a marriage one :( On the way to the walk of breakup, Ulay actually knocked up his translator and married her, knowing full well he was technically still with Marina until the walk was over. genuinely the first time i heard of this experiment, it began with something along the lines of “if a woman was entirely vulnerable to you and you could do whatever you want to her, what would you do” and my immediate response was to hug her. i just want a hug. i watch these videos because i genuinely don’t understand how these cruel peoples minds work and i find it so fascinating but also so scary

To be perfectly honest my first thought was “idk, probably just stand there awkwardly?” I don’t typically like strangers being in my personal space and I’m genuinely repulsed by the thought of harming another person, so I’d probably just stand there for a minute, try to appreciate her art by observing the room and thinking about what she was trying to convey with her performance, then leave. The only thing that I can think of that I might do is maybe braid her hair in a pretty way and try to weave the feathers into it. I cannot fathom how or why a human being would chose to do the things described in this video.
@476f7474

It's important to understand that this was not an experiment but a piece of art. The setup of this whole thing (6 hours = 360 minutes, 72 objects, 5 minutes per object are enough to get bored of that one) actually preprogrammed the entire event to a point that people ran away when it was over, not because they were ashamed (which isn't a reason to flee) but because they were afraid (which is a reason to flee) of whatever had made them behave against what they believed to be their own nature and partake in this disturbing 6 hour interactive nightmare. Abramovic was probably the only one who knew exactly what happened and when after the 6 hours expired she went around, seeking conversation with the people who had just witnessed themselves torture her with no ill will against any of them - at this point she basically rubbed it in everyone's faces that actually she had been the only one in this who had not lost control but whose script everything had been following, including herself whose role made the idea that she could be in control of her own art performance seem absurd as opposed to what should have been the obvious truth there. And that's why it's art and not a social experiment. It's not meant to produce unbiased results any more than a magic show is. People who actually risk their lives during performances, they always die young because sooner or later, even the best luck runs out. Artists who get old even though they almost die on a regular basis, they are not taking as much risk as you might think. They simply plan meticulously and with all the security measures but plan something that looks like a nearly fatal accident into the routine from the beginning. It's a pretty natural escalation that you also see with kids learning to ride a bike: The better they get, the more they feign risky situations to show their level of control going far beyond just normal driving. You also see it at every magic show: Something seems to go wrong and kill the magician before they miraculously appear somewhere else. There is some misdirection and practical trickery involved there but the main level where this works is psychological. The same way, the crowd of 0 wasn't actually uncontrolled. They were just controlled indirectly through their surroundings and the whole setup. There was a reason why the gun was there as a lonely escalation step that was so out of line with the other objects and there was a reason why it was set up to have to be loaded manually with a single bullet. The gun was the only thing in this selection that was able to instantly destroy the mass delusion of being unbound from reality because when people see a gun being loaded, they notice that shit gets real and they are instantly present. And if the person who loaded the gun had emitted his decision to use it to shoot the artist, people would have intervened quicker. This is just one security mechanism I stumbled upon reading - I'm sure the full setup was a lot more complex. And please don't mistake what I am saying as a defense for anyone who isn't under the spell and direct influence of a very extreme artist who does stuff like this. Art exists partly besides reality. Artists of many types casually control crowds of up to thousands of people. To draw from that any conclusions about normal people in daily life is just absurd.

No exaggeration I've caught myself crying three times watching this video. Just the sheer emotion that gut punches you is astounding. I can't stop thinking that if I were at that performance piece I would just kneel beside her and stroke her hair behind her ear and sing to her. I've always struggled with the way mental illness is somewhat downplayed or twisted in art forms. Van Gogh for example was a deeply troubled man, plagued by psychiatric illness and evidence even suggests he had manic depression. But it somehow feels like people have all collectively said "oh doesn't matter, his paintings are wonderful". Mental illness is somewhat twisted into something beautiful and mystical in art and to some extent it is. There is something beautiful in creating art from the darkness one's own mind can sometimes put us through. However when people use art as a way to harm themselves, thats where I draw the line. Why is someone forcing their fingers down their throat or getting facial plastic surgery without anesthesia all while filming it considered art and not what it actually is which is a form of self harm?
@SamuelBlack84
@SamuelBlack84 27 күн бұрын

The footage of Marina and Ulé meeting after all that time made ME cry! It was beautiful to witness - albeit on a KZfaq video. The art piece in Prague shows the depths that people will go to if they are given "permission". However, she didn't say they "must" use these items on her, it was stated they "could" use them - if they so wished. She gave them a choice. These people chose violence. It seemed I was there for about five minutes, but it was closer to twenty-five. It was amazing and impossible to explain. Rumour is that she wore an in-dwelling catheter.

Oh, I forgot to say that I love her. In university, my Master’s program, I wrote a paper about her 1974 Naples “Rhythm 0” Italian exhibition. Also, when the six hours were over, and Marina became animated human again, all left in the gallery ran away. There are, literally, thousand of articles written about Rhythm 0, (including mine.) I was a child in 1974, but when I first hear of Abramovíc, I loved her. I do still. I recall my parents speaking of this, and my father said that he would have brushed her hair. I believe he would have.

It’s terrible that people do this. In this situation, the people said that they were given ‘permission’ to hurt this poor woman. They weren’t told to hurt her, they were encouraged to interact with her with any of the objects, but they were given the opportunity to hurt her. It’s just horrific how all this can happen to a woman in only 6 hours, just because people were given the opportunity to harm her. There’s a difference to the people who hurt her saying that they were told to do this, and then actually being told to just interact with her. They were never told to harm her.

Learning about this woman and her art has definitely made an impact on me and I feel a sort of connection to her artistically in the ways she faces and explores such dark themes and lays them out on display like this. Sometimes it's so painful all I can do is pray that the pain will lessen even a little. My period cramps are as extreme and hard as labor contractions. The woman wiping Marina's tears away in rhythm zero is so representative of womanhood. In the end, there is so little you can do to save other women from the cruelty of society. The woman was ultimately just as helpless as Marina. All she could do in that situation was offer comfort, wipe her tears away. Did it matter? Did it even make a difference in the end?
