The way we view the Bible can influence every other aspect of our lives. If we see Scripture as just one voice among many, that influence will be limited. But when we recognize God’s Word as our final authority for faith and godliness, the Bible constantly reforms our lives. In this message, Dr. Michael Reeves examines the different views of scriptural authority that emerged during the Reformation and discusses how this issue continues to separate Roman Catholics and Protestants today.

Mark 9:38-40 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part.

Sola Scriptura...I was just thinking of that as I was listening... Scripture alone rules and governs

Who established the canon of the Bible? Who changed it and on what authority did they do so?

In addition to self-authentication, I find that reading the bible, especially the words of Jesus, provides power to follow the words of Jesus. This is in contrast to reading pagan Greek philosophy in college, with zero inclination to live along those lines, hence “moderation in all things” - I’m afraid we didn’t drink moderately.

The Scripture is the final authority. That is why cannon was so important that it took over three-hundred years of prayer, research, and Spirit guidance to establish the Holy Bible. Of course, this only applies to the books of the NT. The OT was mostly settled by our Jewish brothers.

How can Scripture alone be the final authority if to determine which books and how many of them belong to Scripture depends on authority outside Scripture? Whether Scripture contradicts Creeds, Confessions, Papal statement etc. or not is subjective. Who is authorized to decide that?

You have a better authority than scripture then?

@@HearGodsWord I did NOT make that statement. Answer my questions: (1) Who has the authority to determine canon of Scripture, if Scripture itself does not define it? (2) who has the authority to decide whether Creeds or Confessions etc. contradict Scripture or not?

@@stuartjohnson5686 Scripture does not define itself. Scripture interpretation is also subjective and depends on individual.

@@justfromcatholic the Holy Spirit has authority, not your pope sitting on his throne in his Palace. To answer my own point as you wouldn't...no-one is of higher authority than scripture because it is the word of God.

It is very easy to make the Catholic Church look bad but very difficult to correctly represent her: “But the task of authentically interpreting the word of God, whether written or handed on, (8) has been entrusted exclusively to the living teaching office of the Church, (9) whose authority is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This teaching office is not above the word of God, but serves it, teaching only what has been handed on, listening to it devoutly, guarding it scrupulously and explaining it faithfully in accord with a divine commission and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it draws from this one deposit of faith everything which it presents for belief as divinely revealed.” -Dei Verbum, Second Vatican Council Curious why if Dr. Reeves wanted to quote something current on the Catholic Church’s position why he didn’t share this quote? Ligonier- please represent Rome accurately and fully if you’d like to tear her down. I realize a response could be made “we can’t get everything into a short 30 minute video” and I get that, but there seems to almost always be Rome set up as a straw man to make her position look as ridiculous as possible so that the twin knights in shining armor Luther and Calvin can rescue everyone from her supposed ignorant and narcissistic theology. Read smart Catholics for themselves if you want to know what they believe. Or KZfaq Reason and Theology.

There are too many doctrines and practices within the RCC that are clearly not laid bare before the text of Scripture for your statement to be taken seriously. I mean, even the very nature of the “priesthood” contradicts Scriptural authority. And then you’ve got the mass, the magisterium, marianism, veneration, justification upon death, purgatory, 2nd commandment issues - the list never ends.

Oh, and let’s not forget that the RCC never repented of its condemnation of the actual gospel as heresy and its embrace (or at minimum it’s unclear statement on) faith and works for justification. Also the hideous corruption which is its position on infused righteousness in lieu of imputation.

The video is about the authority of scripture, not unpicking the many issues of the RCC.
