With people new to the B-36, historians and modelers in mind, here are few inaccuracies, continuity errors and impossibilities found in every B-36 fan's favorite film.
I know, it's just a movie.
Please check out my channel as I am building a full (1/1) scale B-36H flight deck from scratch using vintage B-36 equipment whenever possible.

My Dad was the youngest 2LT Aircraft Commander in in the B-36 and the B-52. He, like most veterans, never said much about his time flying these planes. I have one photograph where he was the Pilot (copilot) standing on the exit ramp/stairs with his crew carrying a .38 S&W revolver. Maybe 1-2 hours of firearms training. To protect the onboard nuclear weapons? Either inHawaii...or Anchorage. Years later, I asked him what he was supposed to do if a Soviet Spetnatz team emerged to get control of the on board nuclear weapons. He answered honestly that the .38 S&W revolver was actually to stop any crew members who attempted to sabotage the airplane or weapons. Or any US ground personnel who attempted to approach the onboard nukes. Especially if alone. That was a NoNo. I said to him that the B-36 appeared to be a giant airborne battleship. He agreed. The B-52, with aerial refueling, changed everything.

@@msmeyersmd8 I find it hard to believe that a butter bar, 2nd Looie would be placed in the position of Aircraft Commander on one of these planes. A second lieutenant is just out of the academy and flight school for christs sake. No way in hell he has the experience to handle an airplane of this magnitude. Don't mean to call you a liar. But I just don't believe it. Maybe you got your dads rank confused?

Yeah, the inside of the aircraft in these scenes is actually a multi-piece set that can slide apart to allow access to equipment and crew, or back together to look whole as the shot dictates. They have to make a lot of compromises to allow room for bulky cameras to move in and out, actors to be able to move through the sets, what looks good (or not) on camera, budget, lighting, sound, and what they're allowed to show. This is especially true when the aircraft is still active and contains sensitive equipment that the AF doesn't want shown, as was the case with the B-36 when this movie was made. The B-47 cockpit set from later in this movie is on display at the March Field Museum near Riverside, CA. Visitors can see how, like the B-36 set, it was built in sections to open up for cameras or to slide back together as needed to look reasonably realistic and whole. It looks pretty good in person but appears much more realistic in the film due to their careful use of camera angles, field of view, green screen, etc. Soundstage sets that open up for cameras and slide back together to look whole, such as houses, vehicles, whatever, are a common part of Hollywood "magic". They're typically pretty disappointing if you see them in person. I was USAF on heavies including B-52s, and most movies that show the simulated interior of any aircraft, especially active war birds like B-52s, are very inaccurate, but the vast majority of the audience doesn't know the difference. On the other hand, some are surprisingly realistic, such as the interior of the B-52 in Dr. Strangelove. It's not 100% accurate, nor did it need to be, but it's far closer than most movies bother to make it.

@acemakerFussy judgmental profound interest in the B-36 might benefit from being tempered by interest in the realities of film making, including the distinction between documentaries and fictional drama. Think about it. The notion that lack of accuracy is due to carelessness or not doing "their homework" is almost certainly incorrect, especially when one considers that not even films about making films are accurate...because they are fictional. There is no such thing as accurate fictional drama. Frankly, if it was good enough for bomber pilot and Filmmaker Jimmy Stewart to accept the compromises need to make such a film, it should be good enough for any other gatekeepers.

Jimmy Stewart having also been an Air Force bomber pilot would’ve been fully aware of these inaccuracies. But wasn’t likely concerned about it as this is just a movie. According to Jimmy Stewart's bio, he was qualified on the B-47 and the B-52. So he probably never flew the -36 as a pilot. But I don't think this small inaccuracy takes away from the overall magic of the movie.

@@BrianMoore-uk6js He was also a fully rated pilot on B-24s in WW2, and got rides in later aircraft he wasn't necessarily fully checked out on. For example, I saw some footage of him taking a B-58 ride. If he wanted it, a safe guess would be that he got some Peacemaker time, too. I'd be surprised if he didn't get some stick time on just about anything he wanted, alongside someone fully checked out on that type, of course. That's not unusual for any senior AF rated officer, let alone one who's also one of the biggest names in Hollywood. It was great publicity for the AF.

Good observations - I never noticed that open cockpit window in flight. Most is just the usual rearranging of set positions and time done on movie shoots to make the scene work - they call it “cheating”. There’s also the special paint job they did for the movie - the inset “No Smoking” on the nosewheel door, the AF star on the nosewheel seen in some shots, the extra stripe detail on the jet pods including an “eye” at bottom. Red stripes are of course correct - 26th Bomb Squadron, 11th Bomb Wing. Head first down the tube worked better for the scene, but they usually went feet first due to the nose -high flight angle of the plane. The tube does take a long time - a while back I went through the one at the AF Museum. Not seen here but check out the crewman in the rear blister during the takeoff roll - he appears to be giving the camera the finger.

My father was a WW2 pilot in the RCAF and the USAAF. Before that he had done a hitch in the very, very small USMC as an aircraft mechanic prior to the war. The last war movie he saw was the 1990 Pearl Harbor movie. He chuckled all the way thru it while he explained all the errors in it to my older brother who was a USNR Captain. Everyone can see the tumbling tumbleweeds of California in 1965's Battle of the Bulge. Back before the internet there were at least 2 books published about errors in war movies. One, movies have a budget to try to hit. Two, in all movies, there is a time compression. In reality the Jimmy Stewart character would have gone thru refresher basic flight training, then ground school on the B-36 or any other aircraft he would have flown. Only then would they have put him into the flying course for the B-36, in order for him to fly co-pilot to re-start his USAF flying career. Jimmy Stewart's character was a little too old to be playing in the MLB or to have a much younger wife such as June Allyson. My dad knew pilots who had not been wounded and were civilian pilots who were very happy to get an additional 15-20 years flying time in tankers and cargo aircraft that were not jets. As a kid, I got to see the inside of a number of such aircraft flown by friends of his who were on permanent flying status just like they were regular USAF, but they were actually Reserve or Air Guard pilots. The other thing he pointed out was that there were sometimes technical errors even in the training films during WW2.

@@bessarion1771 I think it's important to remember that with a 30-year time difference, the films were shown to 2 different audiences. TTT was made at a time when there was a strong Anti-war, Anti-military sentiment in the nation; it was also a very long film, there was a long period before the "Action" really starts, and the abstract history of Signals Intelligence and the intentional security-related bureaucratic delays in getting out a rather unsure and vague warning nearly put the audience to sleep. "Pearl Harbor" was made when the target audience was videogame-savvy, and wanted to dive into the explosions and flight sequences and ALL the things Michael Bay films are valued for. ...But the only message Hollywood decision-makers will "learn" is what the resulting box-office figures were. And who their target audience ("Mooks with excess money and testosterone and "Call of Duty" wisdom) really are.

@bessarion1771 Күн бұрын
@@user-eh4ix5lh2g All of that is true, but TTT experience taught the execs not to worry about details. My opinion is that attention to details is why Maverick is so much better than the original Top Gun. Maverick got details right to a ridiculous level of skunk works logos in the Mach 10 aircraft, and the fact the reason Goose could not eject is that his seat wasn't armed CLEARLY shown in close ups. Regardless. Money is the King in Hollywood.

Im just greatful that this movie was made. To see the magnesium overcast and the B47 operational in a picture to that extent is awsome. Many great aircraft legends didn't get that attention and theres little to show of what they were like when operational. I hope you continue to point out inaccuracies in more videos, it doesn't distract from my love for this movie at all. Consider this, hollyweird will never "get it right" with its engineerd methods and techniques for making movies for its perceived target audiences. Masters of the air has so many errors because of the deliberate compromises directors make to keep the attention of people who otherwise have little interest in the subject. It uses a "star wars" like level of action to keep its audience entertained. Ive worked in the aircraft restoration buisness on B17s so its tough to watch. Movies have to compete with their phones for attention. I guess at least the story is being told. Production costs are also enormous and budgets going over can get a film canceled if the suits get nervous. Technical advisors often find out how costly sets are to build because of who builds them. Motion picture industry is a union gig. And most important, in this movie a real combat veteran was the star. Genral Stewart was a respected leader of men in the air war over Europe. I can imagine he drew from his own experience in portraying that character. Carry on, i hope you continue.

And I understand in making a movie, the interior scenes would have probably been impossible without cutting up the aircraft. I think they did a pretty good job with that film. Other movies that I think were pretty good: “Bridges at Toko-Ri” (F9F Panthers, AD Skyraiders and the Sikorsky HO3S-1 helicopter). In what other movie can you see jets launching from a straight-deck Oriskany with hydraulic catapults. Oriskany later got an angled flight deck and two steam catapults and operated at Yankee Station. “They Were Expendable” (PT boats) “Battle Hymn” (P-51’s) “Air Force” (although there were a lot of inaccuracies, it was still a good story and crew chief Robbie (Harry Carey) loved his airplane. It was made in 1943. B-17C’s, I think they were.) They can’t make movies like these anymore. They have to have the action of a Star Wars movie or they won’t sell.

Expecting accuracy in this movie, is about like going to your local airport to look for a Reindeer. And yes, there have been people who thought that aircraft was real.

I am old and was in love with the B-36 when I was a kid. This movie is a wonderful archive of what a B-36 looked like flying, taking off, etc. It was filmed in the best that Hollywood had at the time; otherwise we would be left with crummy air force films. Does anyone know what the availability of the B-36 was? During it's service life what percentage could get off the ground in an emergency? I've heard rumours it was a very troublesome plane.

@acemakerI would say that using a film (made for the purpose of entertainment) as a historical reference for technical information (as if the film was a documentary) to be rather flawed. Inaccuracies would indeed occur simply due to realities of filming. Interior layout could get changed to allow for framing of shots (e.g. walls and bulkheads may get removed, equipment relocated, etc. -- simply to allow characters to appear in the shot for particular scene, and to allow for dialogue to progress without being awkward). Transparencies (i.e. the glass of the windows) are often not present in the sets -- simply because they'd cause problems with lighting or cause unwanted reflections. Depicting an accurate amount of time that it would take someone to transit through the connecting tunnel between the fore and aft section would result in several minutes of "dead spot" in the progression of the film.

Yes, the seats they are in are the same type the later dual engineers used, which are nowhere nearly as comfortable as the proper adjustable, long range units.

I guess they decided to make and film a movie with big old Technicolor cameras for a general civilian audience. What a shame, when they could have used a handheld 8MM movie camera and documented the entire insides of a B-36H.

I was in SAC, and it really depended on the specific officer. Some were surprisingly down to Earth and tended to treat others like their life depended on them/us, which in some cases it did. We had a two star numbered AF commander who started out his career with over 30 combat missions over Europe as an enlisted gunner on B-17s in the 8th AF. He went to college after the war, got his wings, and flew many more combat missions as a pilot in Korea and Nam. He was very down to Earth and easy to talk to, although I wouldn't have spoken up and told him what I really thought unless he asked me directly. 😄 If he had, however, I would have told him. In the movie, "Dutch" was an activated reservist and a pro baseball star that the "average Joe" probably would have felt more comfortable around, like they knew him personally, so I can somewhat see someone opening up to him, especially a fellow disgruntled reactivated reservist who, like him, didn't really want to be there. As some of my SAC comrades used to say when told they maybe shouldn't talk so much around certain people, "What are they gonna do to me, put me in SAC?" 😄
@bryanschuler9097
@bryanschuler9097 2 ай бұрын
@@TS-ef2gv I think you are sugar-coating quite a bit; perhaps a bit of Stockholm syndrome at play. You have also touched upon another aspect of SAC culture beyond the rigid caste system of not speaking up to seniors under any circumstances, which is the pervasive Stasi-like surveillance of the community for any peep of disloyalty. as that is defined by the security apparatus. Maybe some of the troops thought being in SAC was the worst that could happen but imagine having your security clearance pulled while a searching examination of every aspect of your on-duty ad off-duty activity, associations, expressions, opinions and beliefs drags on for months, conducted by hostile examiners who are looking for any deviation in conduct or morals. Grind up a few unfortunate souls for the edification and encouragement of the surrounding masses. I'd propose a better motto for SAC than Peace is Our Profession would be: In Order to Defeat Our Enemy We Had to Become Him

I have yet to see a Hollywood film that's about historical events being 100% historically accurate. Even great films like Apollo 13 have misquotes (Jim Lovell did not exactly say "Houston we HAVE a problem" 🙂). Many things go into making a film, unfortunately a lot of times some historical facts are sacrificed because of budget restrictions, dramatic effect, or just too difficult to recreate. Although these films are entertaining and to a degree informative they are not documentaries and should not be used as accurate historical accounts.

I’ve seen a few films in my time. I was simply pointing it out for content. If the director wanted to be accurate, upon entering the radio compartment, the other guy could have said “I’ll see you in the aft compartment” and went on his way while Dutch could have resumed his conversation as the cart returned. Maybe we will get lucky in the reboot.
