The original photo definitely looks like an empty furniture/mattress store. That would explain the different wallpapers and random wall sections. It's to mimic different rooms in a house, and that explains the wall in the center of the photo not going all the way the the ceiling, because it doesn't need to. Also, the moulding/trim on the lower part of the walls is to protect the wall from being scratched by the metal of the mattress frames. Just my theory, but it makes the most sense to me. I've made progress that is fairly significant and I just want to let you know. I did some measurements of the original photo, basing it off of the outlet in the image which is 2.75 inches wide assuming it is like 99% of all other outlets. So then using that I found that the front left wall, with what we can see at least is 57.75 inches wide. Something very fascinating which narrows down the location is that the height from the floor to the ceiling is *_exactly_* 100 inches. This is very important because that means they used the imperial system during construction and planning of the building, and since the U.S is practically the only country that uses the imperial system that narrows down the search to within the U.S, which may be very big but it is progress. I also got more precise measurements and recreated an accurate blueprint of what we can see from the image. Edit: Images showing the measurements in the replies below.

I was a professional lecturer for over 20 years. This is no doubt an old conference center, likely connected to a hotel. One give away is the rubber bumper guards about 8 inches off the floor so that service carts don’t damage the walls. The cheap industrial carpet and large spaces. The drop callings and fluorescent lights are common.

I genuinely believe that at this point, the only way we’re ever gonna find this photos origin is if the original uploader comes forward. I also think the reason reverse image searching hasn’t worked is because real estate photos aren’t usually kept on the internet for very long. I’ve been reverse image searching this photo and other variants of it for years now and I’ve never been able to find any leads. I do believe this photo has been on the internet before 2018. However, the oldest upload of the photo (as far as we know) came from 4chan. The issue with this is that the uploader was completely anonymous so we don’t really have a way of contacting them… I do hope this mystery is eventually solved, however when looking at other photos people have been trying to find the origins of, (Jeff the killer, etc) I genuinely think this search could go on for years and years.

I'm starting to think the only way we're gonna find this is to go to every US real estate website and release a crawler that checks for architectural matches... EDIT: I just realized the 22/April/2018 photo was NOT the original. The image name on 4chan is 1524371231850.jpg, but in the archive, the file name displayed on top of the post is named 1523164430760.jpg . 4chan seems to use an incremental counter for naming images, and the real file name seems to be an older 4chan post that was later downloaded... I estimate the date to be 7/April/2018 - 8/April/2018.

A 640x480 image means it likely was taken with an early digital camera around 1999 to 2002-ish. If it is more recent, that resolution becomes more and more arbitrary to have chosen. Otherwise, if not then it was likely downloaded from the camera and re-saved at a time when 640x480 was a normal size to choose for your image due to space constraints or even screen resolution constraints. The owner's monitor was likely set to 1024x768 or less if he chose to save it as a 640x480 image for this reason. Determining if it was scanned in from film or fully digital would help. Also how much is it compressed? Can you determine the type of compression? That would all help date it.

It could also be a photo of a school room. Some schools have hanging ceilings like that

It’s definitely most likely taken in the US as it uses US outlets. However due to the camera quality the photo could of been taken a long time ago and wherever it was taken could of possibly changed. It might be from a mixed used building as that style is common with those buildings.

Hi. I know it may sound suspicious (you know what I mean), but somewhere about year ago I've stumbled upon reddit post where people were arguing about origin of the photo. I couldn't link it right now, sadly (I'll try to find it again in nearest time). So, one of the users said that this photo was found in some compilation of "liminal" or other "strange" pictures, you know, on one of photohostings. This compilation was dated somewhere in 2009. I don't say that I've only SEEN someone to claim about all this (date of photo etc.), but that there also was a link to this compilation with this photo. I will try to find this thing once again. My greatest apologizes if I won't be able to find this, or if this will happen to be something else (like not this photo, you know).

If you can somehow image search using "the wayback machine", an internet archive, you could reverse image search before the original post was made in 2018/19 and find the origin of the photo, you wouldn't even need the internet archive to do this, just a way to search before 2019 so your feed doesn't get filled with more recent posts from 2019 onwards

In the image you can see the type of plug it is wearing. There is a page to see the types of plugs standardized by country. The one shown in the image is used in North America, Central America, part of South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru), the Philippines, and Japan. before someone says what im about to say is a joke. im not kidding when i say this. in 2017 i had a dream in which i couldn't wake up. it seemed alot like the backrooms but the yellow walls were more of a orange color. i dont quite remember what happened but i Do Remember that there was no exit. the last thing i remember is seeing a black figure and then waking up with tears in my eyes..

something to know is that you can see a north-American wall plug which basically means that we know the image was taken in north America. This then removes 83.5% of all possible land mass since north America is 16.5% of all landmass on earth.

as of 2022/10/25 backrooms Level 0 Lobby photo was taken using a post Y2K camera made before 2008 & the majority of the cameras were all on the market in 2002 so the most likely year it was taken is 2002 , its 10 years old . the only thing in the image that could be "new" was the partially trimmed new old stock 1985 era carpet being installed that day . by the NEMA 1975 outlet, the location "can be" north & or central America & the north part of south America so this is "mostly Canada, Mexico USA, or a "possession" of the USA like Puerto Rico, Samoa, Guam, the Mariana or Virgin Islands or ,, a former possession like japan BUT the most localized (& LONG shot) clue was a "similar" stencil or wall paper 1998 pattern in a house in South Eastern Pennsylvania

Didn't the person who first posted the photo took the photo it self or knows where the photo was taken or made? If the person is still alive (probably), can't someone ask where it was took? (if the person didn't make the photo we are probably never gonna find the answers to the question.)
