I really relate to this story. I have been trying for years to get my friends into Warhammer or war gaming in general. I messed up and got them into magic the gathering and now they are all just trying to make overpowered decks to stomp each other. When I mention Warhammer, they just say too expensive and no time which is a fair point. I even mention we could just play on tabletop simulator to try it and they just brush it off like it's not an option. The worst part is that I am pretty sure I am the only one in my town that plays any sort of War/Board games and there are no hobby shops here at all not even a mom-and-pop shop. I have to drive over 50 miles to even get a game that are tournaments, but I can only go certain time because I also have a family to take care of. I just want a small group of friends close by that I can play the game with. I get disheartened every time I walk by my display cabinet of Alpha Legion just sitting there collecting dust.

The Kickstarter FOMO is very real. I've managed to stop myself buying board games and miniatures I'm likely not going to use, but I still fall for STLs I probably won't use.

Funny, I was in the Marine Corps infantry. There were more nerds than mancho guys and some of the biggest guys who looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger were like me in that they had already gone through college and got a college degree. Many of them did have laptops and play video games. This was 1995, prior to anything like World of Warcraft. I tried to get into Magic the Gathering at the time, but I found another card game which I liked more, which was obviously copying WH40K. It was called (and I had to look this up to remember) Doom Trooper and it was based on the companion role playing game called Mutant Chronicles. AND OMG IN RESEARCHING THIS I SEE A DIGITAL VERSION HAS BEEN RELEASED ON STEAM AS OF 2020 LOL!

cons might be a good option, learning how to show off a game without being to excited is a skill. people who play want alot. but u need to wrangle them in. watching this at my store was interesting. when i found my voice and confidance i had peple coming back. but the players who where there got to the customers first. after their 30min ramble. the customer wouldnt come back. now this is my experience, and it seems in the end you figured it out. the other thing id recommend is table top simulator. i think we should push it on the discord

I've been listening to many of your videos, and this one's as close to home as it gets. I've done pretty much what Tyler's done, spent silly amounts on various games over the years in an attempt to entice my brother to play something on a tabletop setting with me. 40k, Zombicide, Netrunner and the D&D Adventure Systems. This was, in hindsight (took long enough!) a very silly thing for me to do, as the overwhelming amount of content I had purchased really wasn't my brother's cup of tea, as I'd imagine it seemed like a never ending story. Just like Tyler, I had envisioned and proceeded to purchase into, the epic scale scenarios I myself wanted to create from these games, and that caused real burnout for my brother. I now simply focus on assembling the 40k pieces, to get them painted up and eventually sell. I doubt very much that I'll get anywhere close to the original prices they were purchased for, but it'll be a hard lesson learned, never to be repeated lol. I sincerely hope that Tyler, as well as anyone else that loves their offline hobbies, continues to pursue them healthily without second guessing themselves. It's a genuine joy to hear so many people that are so passionately into these tabletop adventures, and I'm always gutted to hear when someone's hobby time has been hampered by someone or something along the way. Listening to the hobby nightmare clips you upload, really helps me get through cleaning the endless mould lines and actually finishing entire boxes of combat patrols. Many thanks! - Steve

Hell yeah! To be honest when he said he collected a bunch of board games I was waiting for him to say he had “heroscape” love the game my dad had a huge set up of a bunch of the hexagon pieces and I used to just play with them as a kid. Unfortunately my dogs gotta hold of them and they destroyed most if not all of them which sucked cause, yeah I didn’t understand the rules cause I was too young, however still fun. But now that I’m older and my dad was telling me about Warhammer 40K and how he used to collect warhammer quest and old world, which I might add apparently just for the few models he has of the older models have gone up in price from when he bought it by like maybe a couple hundred dollars and a model that was like $25 then was around $50 or more. But I gave in to Warhammer 40K after he kept telling me about it. And I had played the dawn of war games with him when I was younger. So I bought the ultimate edition for 10th edition of Warhammer 40K and eventually put it together and fell in love with the game. My dad then was motivated to get a combat patrol of the Necrons cause he likes the fact that they’re undying and sick as fuck lol. And I was torn from choosing thousand sons or black templars. By the way I had no idea really how the game played at the time or what was good then I just liked the look of them both. And yes I know I had the bugs and the space marines for the starter set but wanted to try something else. And I settled for black templars cause they are sick as fuck and it had a tank. Unfortunately I was learning 10th edition and I bought 9th edition codex supplement and data sheet cards and that sucked but whatever. Anyways shortly after all of that I found your channel good sir which I have to say it’s been enjoyable listening to these story’s and I hope this guy in this hobby nightmare can find some of his fellow nerds as much as him right now I’m in a similar boat but I have my dad who likes it so I’m glad about that but I really do hope he finds them. 🤞anyways sorry for the long comment don’t forget to drink some lovely tea people. first of all for the creator of the story (and for all other in similar situation) there is a ruleset made by cast of poorhammer podcast called horde mode, those are additional rules for 40k that allow you for PvE experience (either singleplayer or in cooperation with your friends). if you dont have anyone to play with it might be worth looking second. yeah that story hits close to home as i also dont have anyone to hobby with within hydrogen bomb explosion radius

With Warhammer and D&D I've had experience going all in. I DMed Wild Beyond the Witchlight for D&D 5e, had such a blast that I bought a brick of the Witchlight minis boxes to use, and whatever I didn't get I bought off the Miniature Market webstore. Shortly after getting them all collected, life decided that we couldn't play by changing several player's availability including my own. My Drow friend never did get to save his son in the game :'( (until I did a chapter and campaign wrap up one shot one Christmas, but it was so scuffed it didn't feel great xD)

I once decided i was going to get into HEMA, i spent $800 on 2 steel longswords, all the pads and gear, studied the manuals. Non of my friend group were into it and i couldn't go to actual club cause of my manic work schedual. I sold the swords for $400

The ending of this one kind of reminds me of the guy in Ontario who's been running a single DnD campaign for over 40 years (look up the video interview if you haven't) who at one point had to tell his daughter "if your boyfriend gets involved with this, you breaking up with him doesn't mean I've broken up with him".

Heroscape is great. If you want a simpler wargame that doesn't take several hours it's a great time

The old world isn't Warhammer? Please explain what you meant. I have played WHFB since 3rd ed and the rules for T.O.W seem inline with 6th - 8th editions. It's what I imagine 9th or 10th ed WHFB might have looked like if Age of Sigmar had never happened. The only issue with T.O.W that really burns my bottom is only bringing back a limited number of Factions and dropping so many others. I know the reasons and cannot argue them, but it was still a bitter pill to swallow.

30:45 That's a mistake I've made to Many times. You give new players choices, and they usually underestimate how big the game Is. I taught some friends star wars legion and they wanted to try a huge droid army vs clones. After the game laster 6 hours they were exhausted. Luckily my friends kniw the games fun. The only reason the game took so long was because i had to stop to explain rules and answer questions. We've played more games after and they have been getting much better

Sergeant's secret WoW guild could have been about legal UCMJ reasons too. It'd be like being in a guild with your boss. I don't know the specifics and it might be different based on the era Tyler was enlisted, but higher ranked soldiers, such as Sergeants and Officers, aren't supposed to fraternize with lower ranked soldiers. If someone in the squad who is under the command of the sergeant, then he can use that for inappropriate leverage in the guild. If it were open about "Oh yeah join my guild" then it would have to be appropriate, blah blah blah. Marines don't like red tape. They like crayons and glue.

I played Battle star once. With 4 others. I was the only human. Not a fun game in the end with a mechanic like that. But id play it again knowing its built like that. And it wont hurt my bum-bum if i loose again. I learned halo 1 by playing two top kids. Games went from 25-0 for a month. Until they started being dead even. Till i finally won. Much better experiance knowing how much in improved through learning. Instead of quiting cause i lost once.

I spent a bunch of time and money to get into AoS and have found almost no one to play with. So when I started 40k I made myself rules lol I have to play 5 games at 500 points before I grow to 1k points.
