It's been a while since I've talked about the basics of histamine intolerance. Let's get into it ⬇️
👉 What is histamine?
Histamine is a natural chemical that is released by white blood cells called mast cells as an important part of a healthy immune system response to a threat or allergen though many things that can contribute to an excessive build up of histamine in the body, causing inflammatory symptoms.
👉 What are the symptoms of histamine intolerance? The most common ones include:
• Headaches or migraines
• Runny nose and watery, red, itchy eyes
• Nasal congestion, itchy nose
• Sneezing
• Itchy skin
• Flushing of face and/or chest
• Respiratory symptoms including asthma, sinusitis, or shortness of breath
• Skin rashes, itchiness
• Eczema; dry, patchy, or scaly skin
• Urticaria
• Acne
• Tissue swelling
• Hives
👉 How is histamine intolerance diagnosed and treated?
Unfortunately there is no test for histamine intolerance. Determination often includes working with a doctor to rule out other causes, trying a low-histamine diet, and correcting underlying imbalances that may be contributing to a histamine intolerance.
