Early October 1993, as Americans went about their daily business, many were stunned to hear of the dramatic events that had taken place thousands of miles away in the impoverished, war-torn country of Somalia involving their own troops in a city few of them had ever heard of. Fought on the streets of the Somali capital, the Battle of Mogadishu, as American history books refer to it, took place on the afternoon of October 3rd 1993, through the night and into the next morning. For American forces, it would prove one of the most intense urban battles since the Vietnam War two decades earlier. Consequently, they suffered more dead and wounded in a matter of hours than in recent years of operations combined, culminating in the shootdown of two US Army UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters.
Yet, despite these factors, the battle itself is considered a tactical success for the US forces involved, for despite daunting odds, political restrictions in the planning stage, and unforeseen mishaps, a force of less than 100 US troops held off more than 10 times their own number of heavily armed hostiles who poured streams of bullets and rocket-propelled grenades at their positions in an intense, coordinated ambush. In today’s episode, we will examine the events leading up to the battle, the battle itself and the fallout from the whole affair, known around the world as the Black Hawk Down Incident.

Man documentaries that cover the Somalia Humanitarian Relief incident overlook many key incidents and units. Instead, they focus on the Rangers and Delta Force. This incident left last scars and changed many US Army procedures. When I was a young soldier, I arrived at 10th Mountain Division as my first duty station. Many of the soldiers were bitter. Egos of the Rangers chain of command did not brief or set plans with 10th Mountain. Many 10th Mountain soldiers were outside doing various missions when all of a sudden, they were ambushed from the fall out of the raid. End results. Bosnia/Kosovo. 10th Mountain was intentionally asked for volunteers for upcoming mission to secure and build up forward bases in Bosnia. I remember my First Sergeant saying there were no volunteers even though we had our hands up. Afterward, he started to drill into us young soldiers to always plan for the worst-case scenarios. To never underestimate a mission and one's perceived enemies. Then on for many years, I carried as much water and preloaded magazines as I could. Ensure night vision goggles, radio, batteries, and replacement parts. Also, learn from the Combat medics various skill sets.

To have the stones to assume the FUCKING RAMGERS & special forces were dependent on an inferior force no matter the situation, those guys are top of spear, shit went sideways and they still done best they could, it’s all the negative about this story and rarely does anyone recognize the sheer amount of bodies the stacked under fire!!! Fucking massive amounts!!! It was bad all way around but to say they got deer in headlights and buckled is an absolute joke!!!! No mention of the Malaysian Armed Forces who rescued the US troops with a loss of a trooper and another wounded, not to mentioned their APC Condors who fought into and out of Mogadishu bringing the US troops to safety. This was a very sad event for the free world which should not have happened.

We remember them, and the Paks who fought with us and for us. This is just a broad overview, and not every account has to be seen as a sacred remembrance of the human and national spirits involved. We need to let people set out basics without having to be responsible for enshrining what’s in our hearts. It’s just that broad basic overviews serve a role in sharing basic understanding of the dynamics that led to the action, and shaped all the ways people feel about it who remember this day. It’s not his job to remember such things, but ours. ❤

A bit more research would have shown that there were three Delta snipers onboard Super 6-2. The third man, Brad Halling, was working the right side minigun as air cover after the crew chief was wounded. When 6-2 was hit by the RPG, Captain Jim Yacone was knocked out and Halling lost the bottom of his left leg. Also, you mentioned SEAL Team 6, which literally had 5 men in the Task Force, but not the Air Force's 24thSpecial Tactics Squadron, who provided combat controllers and pararescuemen who were part of the CSAR team. Four combat controllers went out on the raid: one with Mcknight's convoy, one on the CSAR bird, one with the Delta assault force and one with a Ranger chalk. Another controller rode out with the second convoy when the rest of the Rangers who were still at the base went into the city.

This battle didn't happen overnight. For months, USA Rangers and Delta forces were attacking and hoovering over Mogadishu aggressively before the actual raid took place on October 3, 1993. Somalis were frightened by the helicopter gunfire and noise of the engines 24/7. You must read "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden. That book also gives the Somalis side of the story of what took place and, events that led up to October 3, 1993.

Couple things are surprising after watching this video. First, why wasn’t there a contingency plan in the event that a chopper was shot down. Given that the choppers were flying/hovering at such a low level you’d think they’d understand the danger. Secondly, why wouldn’t they push to have heavier armored vehicles other than humvees? I feel like this mission wasn’t planned thoroughly enough…

The workhorse phase prior to deployment did include training for the loss of one helicopter. They never planned on working up for two or more downed aircraft. Read the book The Battle of Mogadishu. It gives six first-hand accounts of the battle, four from Rangers (including Matt Eversmann) and two Air Force operators, then Combat Controller SSgt. Dan Schilling and then Pararescueman TSgt. Tim Wilkinson. Schilling discusses his desire to head to the 6-4 crash site during the initial ride through the city with Lt. Col. Danny McKnight until it became clear that the convoy was in no shape to attempt the route due to the casualties they sustained.

There was a contingency, but I think they expected to be in and out quick. One of my instructors in AIT was there with the 10th Mountain Division. Also, the government wanted a small footprint there so they denied the request for better air cover and I believe the majority of the streets were too small for Abrams battle tanks. Maybe Bradleys would’ve worked,but we didn’t have armored HMMWV back then. We didn’t start putting armor on them until part way through the Iraq war. They were never meant to be front line vehicles, but they were mobile and agile compared to battle tanks and APCs. A lot of those guys would still be alive if we had MRAPs and ASVs back then. Those men all fought like warriors and heroes. The tactics were definitely questionable. I think the leadership got a little complacent as they used the same battle plan each time.

@@kevinRip81 No doubt the men on the ground were brave. It was a terrible situation and I can’t imagine fighting the numbers they were dealing with. The night time fighting seems incredibly frightening given that they were surrounded…I’m just irritated because I believe the command kind of failed them and it cost lives.

You know that Aidid had a Son (🤔eldest, favorite wife’s son something) who had been sent to the US as a child and had joined the Marines. He was DEPLOYED with the MEU that was there and he also took a leadership role in Somalia after he separated from the service.

That's something a lot of people who talk about the battle don't acknowledge. The Malays and Pakistanis who were part of the rescue convoy did a good deal of fighting through the night. One thing the movie got wrong was that the Paki and Malay commanders were notified of the raid and were on standby for extraction. The problem was the way it was organized. Took hours to assemble everyone at the harbor staging area.

There was another similar incident a couple of months prior, in which journalists there to help the Somalis expose the supposed evil of the American intervention. The Somalis turned on the reporters with equal violence, which showed more about how crazy that place was at the time. They were subject to a frightening mass hysteria that made Somalia essentially a hell on earth. People never mention the first incident because we cling to the notion that people’s actions necessarily make some kind of sense. That evil and cruelty can just take possession of people and make them a hazard to themselves, their friends, and innocent bystanders is unthinkable. But following the story as a kid, that’s what I saw. It still puts the fear of God into me today.

I was a young girl in 1993 l remember when the usa military came to somalia to give humanitarian aids which somalia was undergoing hunger and drought but the somalis found out the humanitarian aid was propaganda rather the us military wanted oil and other resources from somalia and the somalia leader Aydid denied the Aids and asked them to leave immediately but the us military started war with somalia it was October 2nd when we were all asleep at 12:00 at night we heard bomb and gun shot which lead to deaths of many somali families who were killed by the us military the leader of somalia General aydin called out for people to fight for themselves since the war already began at that time somali people didn't even have advanced weapons like the us but the fought strongly and denied the us to arrest Aydiid

You learn in war the innocent civilians could be mistaken for an enemy due to the enemies action. Even though some Somali citizens took no part in holding a gun or commuting acts of violence, stayed peaceful, the US soldiers would sometimes mistaken them in caution making the conflict more dangerous, similar to Vietnam. That’s what happens with socialism, a few bad eggs make a bad name for millions, a few radical thinkers make an entire people look bad. Some Somali citizens took part in destroying the UN presence, most Somali citizens needed the food and water.

Seems like Russia isn't learning their lesson over in Ukraine. Now they want to start a whole brand new war on a whole other front. Russia just can't seem to get it together and learn their lesson. Still using equipment from the 80s and struggling to maintain a barely functionable naval force, not to mention their flagship just got flipped into a submarine by a country who barely has a naval force. It's funny how they thought it would take them 3 days to win in Ukraine, now they are getting pounded into the ground. Most of their men surrendering because of being forced to fight in such a pointless war.

Does anyone know why they were flying low enough to be hit by an RPG? Did the enemy have high altitude air defense? Why does a helicopter have to be low for recon? Cant we literally see stuff from our satellites? We couldn't put those on a helicopter?

The tech we have now vs 30 years ago is HUGE. This was a combat mission so they were flying "Nap of the earth". very low and fast over the rooftops. Limits the people on the ground ability to see and react to the aircraft. So you are harder to attack. Where as Flying high makes you an easier target and from MUCH longer range. Especially since there was a risk from man-portable SAMS. Dale and that airframe were from my unit.
