My favorite thing about this story is the irony of how it ends. The only reason why they survived the attack by the iron warriors is because sigismund was not in command, he would have tried to break out and been cut down out of formation, but the flipside is that if it had been Sigismund or a commander like him who receivied that final order to return, they would have simply delayed their retreat until they had finished criplling the iron warriors. Loyalty saved them and damned the Imperium at the same time

This is the first I really have ever heard of this battle. I’ve heard its mention in the past but I’ve never had any details given. One of the examples as to the reason I listen and recommended this channel to all my friends that even have a passing interest in the franchise.

Even as an Iron Warriors fan, Alexis Pollux was a warrior and fleet commander of tremendous skill. I doubt even Sigismund could have done better at phall. He made Perturabo build automata as bodyguards, he was so surprised that the boarding party got that close through his Iron warrior protection. Legend. Glad you gave him some light here in yet another of your superb videos, Oculus, as Id never fully heard the full tale of the Battle of Phall

YEEESSS, I've been wanting information on the Battle of Phall since first reading about Dantioch, but wasn't able to find a cohesive narrative about the event.

This channel is a good lore channel for those who don't know the lore, but an immaculate one for those that do!

To think that a commander of the Fists could have taken the head of the bitter perturabor right then and there is just awesome and tragic at the same time. Hell! Love that evaluation at the end of the video. For all intents & purposes, the Imperial Fist Retribution Fleet was not meant to survive that day. Yet they did (however battered). To call that a defeat (or an Iron Warrior victory) would be a gross oversimplification; if anything, it was a “pyrrhic” defeat at best.

It's so funny this video came up today, I was just thinking about this battle and how it ends yesterday. I can only imagine how good the Horus Heresy might be if GW had hired experienced historical fiction writers and military-knowledgeable novelists. And I can only imagine how clever the writer thought he was when he came up with this ending. But these videos make even the decidedly young-adult stories from GW sound really good.

A small addendum: Hashin Yonnad, the first fleetmaster, was a veritable legend, having led the Imperium's forces in the Consus Drift Campaign and in the Araneus Wars, that led to Araneus Prime being calles Necromunda. His foresight was proven by his choice of Polux as a successor. It's tragic he went out like that, one of the countless evil ironies of the Horus Heresy.

Sorry, I don’t see Purturabo as a man child. He just got tired of being abused. Everyone took him for granted. As for any argument between Dorn and Purturabo, well Purti cracked the imperial palace and while Dorn technically cracked the “Iron Cage” it was a hollow victory.

I really dislike how this battle was written. But if anyone can "polish" the lore, it is You!

One of the more random consequences of phall was the disgrace of Perturabos bodyguard, the dominators. After having the imperial fists breach the inner sanctum of his flagship, perturabo lost faith in his honour guard and replaced them with the iron circle, a group of massive customised battle automata that he designed and controlled. It probably didn’t do much good for perturabos coolness towards his sons, nor his paranoia.

The fists couldn't have killed Perturabo here. They didn't have the fleet strength to destroy his flagship in void warfare and they didn't have the infantry resources necessary to overcome the Iron Warriors, Perturabo's automata bodyguards (who were both stronger and more reliable than astartes) and the Lord of Iron himself. The attempt, however, would have done a great deal of damage to the Iron Warriors fleet and possibly the interior of the Iron Blood, damage that did not occur due to their retreat. The Fists still endured a great deal of damage due to the difficulties of disengaging, but some of them did survive and bring back the report of what had happened when not doing so would have ultimately been suicide and render that information lost. Only a much deeper dive and analysis of the war can possibly determine which would ultimately have been more valuable. As for the final message and order to retreat, my money's on it being an intentional play by Horus, who wasn't observing, but had it planned to go through then, intended to either rub salt into the wound of an already defeated fleet or to push the Fists to disengage if they'd managed to turn the tides on Perturabo. Despite giving Perturabo more praise than most, he still ultimately held little regard for the Lord of Iron, so I imagine what the fists did here fits in with what Horus expected to play out into a loyalist victory, once again underestimating the power and sheer computational might of Perturabo, who doubtless saw the attack coming and had already decided how to counter it (probably 'take the hit and use their commitment to crush them once they'd moved into a position where their superior maneuverability couldn't save them').
