It’s become a cliche. But The Beach Boys were great In spite of Mike Love, not because of him. Under Brian and later Carl they pushed themselves musically forward and made some great records - Sunflower for example. Also in the late 60’s Dennis started writing, who at his best was incredible as the songs on the post Pet Sounds albums prove. The reason the album Surfs Up suffers is because of the lack of Dennis Wilson songs due to internal politics, but Mike Loves “Student Demonstration Time” did make the album! When Mike finally got control the hits took over and the band became irrelevant musically. That’s a fact. I don’t hate him, but he doesn’t exactly have great artistic vision though it must be said he could sing and sang a lot of the hits. He is only interested in ticket sales. It is a business after all - so fair enough. Those great albums that they did make are still out there and will always find an audience. Pet Sounds is special yes, but there is more to the story.

Brian was clearly the brains and talent behind EVERYTHING. With his ring wearing-girly dancing, bully of a cousin named Mike "Love" always trying to break him down and STILL trying to take credit. I love Mike Love’s vocals, but his bitterness at not having the same musical talent as Brian is palpable and unfortunate. One would think after all this time and after all the fortune and fame Brian’s writing has given him he would be a little more appreciative and humble. Yes, Love contributions were substantial, but give Brian his proper credit. Didn’t he have to take enough abuse from his dad? Recognizing someone for their outstanding work doesn’t diminish the beholder one bit.
@jakemitchell16712 жыл бұрын
I do not agree. I think Mike's resentment comes from a very real lack of appreciation shown to him for his contribution. Yes, Brian was/is a genius. But much of his work would never have seen the light of day without Mike's obsession with "the formula." While Brian was imploding and laying in bed, MIke made sure the band continued. The Mike Love bashing is old, worn out, and just not realistic.

"The vocals sessions were phenomenal um... they were ardous though· (...) He was like Stalin or somebody in the studio, the Stalin of the studio" I think Mike was still resenting "Pet Sounds" at the time he was recorded for the interview. Brian in 1966 never gave a satisfactory explanation through the recording, a explanation in which in terms of bussiness, why it was SO important for the Beach Boys as a group to have a legendary classic rather than a pop album about girls, surfin and hard rock and roll which in terms could build THE SAME money, it was gonna be a hit no matter how much work they will do. Brian pitching to Mike could only speak about his feelings, so Mike prevented to come in terms of agreeing with that as Mike probably thought Brian was having an ego trip rather than making music for the group. It never materialized in sales at the first run, but the success and the respect for The Beach Boys as a all star talented vocal group became clear as years go by. Brian was right in the end and Mike learned to appreciate Pet Sound rather than grief on it. I hope Mike does not resent Brian now. I think he does not.

Mike Love is justified in his being ticked off for all these years. He was a brilliant lyricist no doubt, penned many many of the great Beach Boys songs, but that was at a time where the group was developing together at the same rate, and Mike never felt any major competition from them. But after having come back from tour whilst Brian stayed and wrote, arranged, and produced, Mike was met with the brutal reality that this kid has absolutely exponentially astronomically passed him by in terms of talent and genius. I don't blame people for getting resentful for feeling that way, but it makes no sense why one has to stagnate in that mindset/not move on. He needs to move on, he deserves it after brooding for 60 years. Ugh. He needs to give himself some peace. But he's the only one that can do that. Godspeed Brian, Al, and Mike. Love always, and an incredible indebted thank you for making life more beautiful through your music.

Even that arrogant Mike Love didn't get that. It's because Brian just focused on the sound not any revolutionary thinking or deep place thoughts on the life at the time. The music was great or most of it. Actually Sgt Pepper was all hype just like the cover. Rubber Soul Abby Road were much better yet Rolling Stone is still just critiquing that album by its cover.
