The Best 3D Mario Game - Super Mario 64 Critique

Super Mario 64 is a platformer, released in 1996, for the Nintendo 64 (N64). You play as a plumber so famous that if you don't know him already, I'm surprised you even found this video. You explore Peach's castle, collecting power stars as you travel through various courses. With the power stars, Mario is able to unlock doors to fight Bowser, who's kidnapped Princess Peach. Super Mario 64 was the first-ever 3D Mario game. It boasts a great amount of player choice because Mario can collect power stars in whatever order the player wants. The areas that Mario can explore include both 3D geometry and 2D sprites.
At the start of making this Super Mario 64 Critique, I wasn't sure what I thought about the game. My opinions on Super Mario 64 have changed so drastically, but I think I've finally figured out my stand on where Mario 64 lands in terms of the other 3D Mario games. You may have already guessed what I'll say by the title of this critique/review, but if you see the ending to the video, you'll definitively know where I stand.

I don't know what it is but every time I come back to this game I can have a blast playing it and never get bored. Can't wait for 3D All Stars so I can play it again. Great video too, you really nailed it.

This was the first Video Game I ever played im 25 right now but when i was 3 years old that is when i first played this game! this is the game that got me into Video Games! :)

That's honestly amazing. My first game was Ocarina of Time personally, but I played this one at around the same time, so it helped me to fall in love with gaming too.

3:20 I feel you there on the hard plastic control stick. It digs into my thumb and index finger on long play sessions. Although the slightly large dead zone, is actually not a problem because how articulate the stick actually is and designed for that. I hold it weird and treat it like a mini joystick instead of a thumb stick, but even on the dreamcast where it's a thumb stick, the hard plastic is not so great on your thumbs after a while. So glad soft and textured / and outside ring to catch your thumb from sliding off has become the normal for most game controllers going forward into the future.

My theory regarding why the 100 coin star doesn't boot you out of the level is this. The 100 coin star was a late or one of the last editions to the game. I theorize that you were originally going to get a 1up after 100 coins but because the coins are tied to HP and that there was so few through out the level making the task for 100 much harder, they decided to change reward into a Star. As you already said, the 100 coin star is a much more complex star than all the others as it has no set placement, it is likely that the developers upon deciding to switch the 1 up mushroom for the star now had to problem solve in order for the situation to work. They couldn't have a chapter that said "get all 100 coins" as the set piece for each level can change based on the other chapters and it should be possible to get 100 coins in those as well. As a result they made the feature of staying the the level when you get the 100 coin star so as to not interfere with your current objective. The reason why they couldn't do this for all the other stars is because they had already designed each chapter with specific changes and if they were to let the player explore after getting a star, some might be trying to get an impossible star you can't reach until after you get booted out the stage so as to let the level adjust itself for that specific chapter. I can see that they may have wanted to make the game like how you wanted but I'm sure while it was not due to the limitations of the hardware, it was probably due to the late stages of development and they didn't have enough time to find a better fix. This is just an idea, as someone who is trying to build games himself I have encountered scenarios a lot like this so maybe my judgement is clouded by my experience.

It's my favorite 3D Mario game for a reason. Regarding wasting time, I feel the worst offender is Mario Galaxy 2 for that especially once you were about to collect the Green Stars. I have never been bored playing a Mario game as much as with that game. But obviously that won't take away the criticism of wasted time since that still applies to all 3D Mario games... at least those I played. And I played all but Oddessey.

I don’t fully agree with the stick. See, 64 was made with analogue controls in mind, meaning with this stick that actually puts up a slight bit of resistance, it’s easier to walk slowly across narrow paths, sneak up on piranhas, and even be careful in some challenges. When I play this on Virtual Console or Allstars, it’s way too easy to send Mario flying across the stage without meaning to because the modern thumb stick is looser than what was intended for this game. That fact that your stick has become loose over the years probably doesn’t help in giving the intended experience
