Seriously feels like you're talking specifically at me here. This makes so much sense, and I'm really glad you made this video. Barriers all over the place, especially with pandemic isolationism making me feel guilty if I'm not constantly productive. I want to be prolific like you, but almost nothing makes it past my own critiques.

The self-critique struggle is real. The trick is to just get comfortable making work that disappoints you, honestly-- don't let it get to you or stop you from making stuff. If you don't make bad paintings you'll never make good ones

Soooooo identify. It's exhausting to think about all the prep work just to start painting. It will keep me from actually working. Thank you so much for the video!

I have had similar feelings about not wanting to set up a palette for fear of wasting some paint if it was not used in time. That is one thing that I like about painting digitally. Quick setup and breakdown. No wasted paint. But I really like using real paint too. You have inspired me to overcome the barriers that keep me from painting more often.

i dont mean to hack your hack, but a more beautiful thing about this is that you can shape and size your palette yourself to what ever the task. im sure not every paint project requires a full palette of paint, as some could require double the palette. this is brilliant and just the kind of things i like to do. thanks for busting out a great idea!

A hack-hack! Sure, that works too. I always use the same sized palette so I don't have to think about it-- but I do occasionally put out a small amount of paint.

@@TheObanoth hehe. i was just saying this because you opened a huge amount of interesting possiblities, like reducing waste by using a smaller amount of wax paper or the amount as needed. also being able to make pre cut sheets ready to go, also having another palette or a set of palettes ready to go in a rack to just pull and go, while you can just leave the used palettes off to the side in no rush or concern to clean. also great for schooling children or beginners. but yeh brilliant. lo.

Elite level hack there. Thanks. I use a table easel so i just taped the paper to the table with masking tape.

Thank you for that. I was curious what your palette was and I definitely agree, the plastic palettes for watercolor are a pain to clean and paint dries up getting gunk in my brushes and work...✌

My favourite is just a mirror tile, you can see the translucency of the paint you are working with, and the paint just peels off the tile.

I rarely comment on a video, but this really helped me a lot. I've been dabbling in watercolor, but wanted to see how acrylic works for me... But had an issue with my palette. This is a simple, cheap, and effective solution. Thank you so so much. I will be using it ASAP.

This is such a great idea!! And so much more inexpensive than the paper palettes you get at the art store. I like to use the top of a shoebox size Tupperware container bc it’s moderately satisfying to peel the acrylic paint off and doesn’t take too long unless the paint is particularly dry. And I just use that time peeling to get my mind frame ready to paint. Plus there a lip where I can hold a brush or two without it rolling into the paint. I think right now for me my biggest barrier is setting up a permanent art area so I don’t have to use the kitchen table anymore!! Ha 😅 Love your videos!

This is useful. I use a glass palette right now but I have an unused roll of wax paper I might break out so I can do smaller paintings and not think about clean up so much

This is a wonderful hack but an even more important approach in identifying your deterents. That was one for me too & another is the handling of brushes- I hate cleaning them & I destroy them... what do you suggest??? I'm super grateful for your tips! Love your style tons!!! Dave from Canada

Hang on I use greaseproof paper as a palette but I put soggy kitchen roll underneath to keep it wet. Are you seriously saying it works dry? When my kitchen roll needs respritzing the paint dries out too...

I was going to say baking paper is really good to use but then seen via the packaging that 'wax paper' is the same thing lol (UK / US) I usually make my own stay wet with baking paper and kitchen roll (tissue) or Ill just do like youve done here and tap the backing paper down to my glass palette i use for oils

Yeah i get it but nah the issue i have is its to floppy its hard to get it really tight and smooth. For me that's a must and the cardboard is too light so it moves all the time grrrr. And the color is murky not as good as pure white if you want accurate color i like white. The real issue is WHY do they charge so much money for stupid palete paper grrrrr.
