This 1950s color film produced by Atlas Film Corporation for Sinclair Refining Company shows how Sinclair station owners can increase their profits and how to run a service station. A Sinclair service station owner, Ray, in a black uniform talks to a customer in a car outside Ray Sanders SINCLAIR station. The owner enters the station. Advertisements for Good Year Tubeless Tires are on the walls, along with a box of AC Spark Plugs (0:51). The camera pans to a black-and-white photo of the employee’s daughter and her husband, Walter. The man opens a letter from his daughter, where she explains that Walter wants to come to his station in Clinton to learn how to successfully run it. A 3-T Good Year Tire Sale sign is shown (1:53). Walter’s bill is shown with sales in gasolines, motor oils, lubrication, tire, batteries, and other revenue (2:04). Walter refuels a customer, Marvin Scott, honking his horn outside the station. The man waves a dollar bill out the window and drives away. Walter and Ray stand outside the station and talk about safety. They bring the display rack, which has the Goodyear Tires logo, next to the pump, which has the Sinclair H-C Gasoline logo (4:09). A Coca-Cola logo is visible in the background (4:10). Signs for El Rancho Market (5:00), Giant Food (5:03), and the inside of El Rancho are shown. A cartoon druggist is shown selling cosmetics, toys, magazines, and photo supples (5:16). Walter and Ray go back in the station. A closeup of a Bennett gas pump is shown (6:05). Freddie, a Sinclair employee, cleans a customer in a grey suit’s windshield. The customer walks to the Good Year Tires display rack and touches some tires (7:04). A customer pulls up to the pump with his wife in an Oldsmobile, and Ray tries to convince them to buy new Goodyear tires. The camera zooms in on the “danger zone” tires with worn treads (8:26). The customer orders H-C gasoline, a high-octane fuel. The film cuts to a man jacking up his broken down Oldsmobile with a flat tire on the roadside (11:54). Freddie stops to help and sends a Sinclair service car. Back in the station, Freddie pops the car’s hood and indicates the old battery, spark plugs, and fan belt (13:41) and the Sinclair job ticket. The film ends the flashback with Ray reading another letter from his daughter about Walter’s new service station. A view of Walter Demming’s Sinclair sign is shown (15:15). He installs new Goodyear tires on a customer’s car. Goodyear V 404H fan belts and batteries are shown (16:35). A customer with a brake light out pulls up to the station (17:46). Ray finds a leaky radiator hose on Mr. Scott’s black Oldsmobile (20:20) and sends a company truck for him. The film ends with Mr. Morrison agreeing to have new tires put on his car. Walter winks from the station.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Nobody gave me a trade-in value when I bought my new Goodyears last month. Should have gone to Sinclair.

That's why there called service stations, my father,RIP, brought up a family of 5 working at a service station, I remember 27 ¢ a gal., as a kid I'd go with a gas can for our lawnmower and get 10 ¢ worth of gas. A dime to mow the lawn a few times.

The film doesn't grasp that the candy and tobacco that the drug store sells should be sold inside. I looked up the history of the Wawa chain. It started as a dairy store, It added sandwiches and became a sandwich shop. It added gas pumps and became a gas station.

I know the old timers won't believe it, but this kind of bumper to bumper service went out of fashion after cars got more reliable

Wrong. It was self service gas stations that did it the most. Cars still need tires, oil and belts. Big box and chain stores have taken those as people rarely leave the pump and you don't need a "sales force" pumping gas while looking out for sales. This is reality.
