In this video, I will test the five most common bed leveling sensors in the market for 3D printers. The first group will be the BLtouch and its variants, including the original BL touch, a super cheap knock off called the 3D touch, and another BLtouch style design from Creality, the CR touch. I won’t call it a knockoff yet as a knockoff is usually cheaper in terms of price and quality . We also have the non BL-touch group, including another sensor from Creality, the built-in strain gauge that came with the CR-6SE and the latest CR-10 Smart, and finally, the Prusa SuperPINDA, which is an inductive sensor.
I will compare them side by side and see which is the best auto bed leveling sensor for 3D printers.

Great video and pretty much the only one that compared all the popular probe types. One thing I'd mention though, by testing on different printers, it adds a ton of variables. Mainly that the accuracy of the Z axis greatly affects the accuracy of the probe. I'd love to see a video where all the probes are tested on the same printer, but using different mounts ofc.

But if I think back to when my daughter was that age. I just can not imagine her presenting so professionally. Without wishing ill will I hope this young lady does not get scooped up by Disney, the world does not need another Brittney. Part of the reason I watch is because she reminds me of my daughter. Apart from when she was a baby. We always treated her as a young person, and encouraged her to take decisions and responsibility. I have a CR Touch on an Ender 3 V2 and one on a CR-10s. I do notice that the pin retraction is slow and the speed does vary but it doesn't seem to affect accuracy. I've done several tests on both and the worst I ever got was 0.007 and the best at 0.002. I think all are good enough that it won't show in the print so it seems like whatever is cheapest is the best option. I'll probably try a 3D Touch on the next one.

Great video. Ideally, testing would be performed on the same machine and build surface. I've had mixed success with the 3dtouch - unfortunately there are multiple versions being sold. The older '2.0' version was problematic - poor precision due to play in the play in the probe, and inability to 'stow between samples' (in Klipper). The newer '3.2' version seems to have fixed these issues, and I now get comparable performance to a genuine BLTouch on an Ender3V2 for a fraction of the price. I don't know which version you've used in this testing - your mileage may vary. I haven't tried inductive probes or strain gauges. 👍 Good stuff!

@AuroraTech
@AuroraTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, it would be easier for me to find the cause if you can make a video. But I would say if it’s a temperature issue, it shouldn’t fail at the same height every time. It should fail or you should see the problem once you start printing the first few layers.
@pen25
@pen25 2 жыл бұрын
If it occurred on same height could be a couple things. Does it happen on all models? You can test this by printing a tower taller than where it starts to mess up. If it's on a single model it's possible the model has a design error or slicing error

The CR touch may very well be a licensed copy, it actually looks like an improvement over the original and has been re-designed to work plug and play with the Ender series printers. bTW, I've seen other reviews of this where it actually worked BETTER than the BL touch, so you might want to get another one and try it again. Your's could be defective. The PINDA inductive sensor looks like an improvement over the commonly available larger units, however there is nothing wrong with those when used with spring steel coated build surfaces. Note that inductive sensors are available in both NO and NC PNP or NPN type switches. The NPN type can be run at 12 or 24 volt power with 5v logic switching while the PNP type are restricted to switch their output signal at the power supply voltage. Since these sensors perform best above 6v power, the NPN type is preferred. These switches are Open Collector. PNP switches will require a logic voltage level conversion. NO and NC sensors are both OK, but you will need to configure the software to use the kind you have.

with a theme like this, I normally doze off after 2 minutes...but funny enough I was awake during the whole video. Again, Prusa shows us that quality in every detail leads to outstanding results. Your worst candidate was off by 10%. But 10% of 0.2mm is just 0.02mm. My bed screw has a pitch of 0.75mm per turn so to achieve the accuracy of your worst contender by hand I have to be accurate within... roughly 1/40 of a turn. You make me do difficult calculations, oh my god. But here is a challenge: The Strain Gauge is not very accurate as it does only one move to measure (I claim). Can you write G-code to make it move once till contact, then back off 0.1mm, and then measure again with just 10% of the speed? I think it would be crowned the KING. Thank you for this FAN-TAS-TIC video.

I’m not surprised by the CR touch, I have one myself and it does alright but you bring up a great point on the inconsistency. I think I’ll switch to the BL touch, though I’m not crazy about its appearance. It’s also funny that creality firmware doesn’t seem to work with their own product. Given this along the fact the CR touch literally comes with the instructions to use the BL touch firmware. I smell a company that has an insufficient firmware development team.

I have a CR 10S Pro V1 which came with an conductive sensor i had a terrible time leveling, so I switched to an Inductive sensor. Based on recommendation from Make Muse. It has worked good then i switched to a glass bed and had to adjust so close to the glass it was a problem if a part warped. So then I went to a composite bed plate and glue stick. Recalibrated, releveled the table, the machine frame and tightened the bed springs. Now i get very accurate level. I want to repeat your study to see how accurate and repeatable it is. Can I beg for the excel Template?? You guys are so good. I share your video with friends. Although you talk too fast for my old ears I just replay that section and I can get it. CR Touch was bound to be dodgy it was Creality made! I would like to know which has the greatest tolerance range, my Ender 5 Plus's aluminium bed was high in the middle like the majority of those machines, because of this the bulldog clips deformed the glass from the corners and took the bed out of the BL Touch's tolerance range. I fixed this by using the screw type bed clips that can be fitted so they just hold the bed without being too tight, I placed just two of them in the centre left and right as there is no bed slinging and just Z motion and this is adequate.

great video , I never even knew the super pinda or the strain gauge existed , so can the pinda be used on an ender 3 pro? and is the pinda the only one that doesn't work on a glass bed? Also funny thing is that I saw some other videos comparing the BL touch to the CR touch and the retraction was worse on the BL than the CR , I was going to pick up a CR touch for my ender pro 3 (my first 3D printer and I have not even unboxed it yet) my local microcenter had one for $39 open box last week so I was planning on going there this week and I checked the stock again today to see if they still had the open box one , to my surprise the stock for open box now says 3 instead of one! so it looks to me that these things are being returned quite a bit for some reason also never knew the 3d touch was so cheap maybe I will just go with that instead unless the pinda can be used with the ender 3 pro , but then again if the 3d touch works on glass bed then maybe I should go with that one in case I decide to update the bed later on

Great job, the CR touch retraction is controlled by the CR touch after triggering, the retraction speed should not affect accuracy, but different amount of probing points and different printers and control boards will. Better not use 4x4 probing
@plee1108

Your CR-Touch seems to behave a bit different from mine. When probing, the Z-axis start to lower, and CR-Touch pin touch the bed, and it will only go low enough that the pin will dip about 1/8in (1mm), and the LED colour will change and Z-axis start to rise. So my CR-Touch doesn't need to go low enough to trigger the pin to "retract" all the way in. So possible you have a defect CR-touch.

Hi. Do you have the ender 5 firmware with cr touch you can share?

My CR-10 Smart Pro when auto leveling the CR Touch drops twice for each point, once it moves quickly and the second time moves much slower. I noticed that in your video it drop only once per point. I wonder if this has anything to do with the poor result.

i have an cr-touch on my ender3(4.2.2) and don´t find it much slower than my previous bl-touch (the retraction speed of the sensor has no influence on the measurement result, since it only depends on the triggering time when the sensor starts to move, how long it then takes to fully retract is irrelevant ) with the m48-command i get 0.001250 on the cr-touch, while the bl-touch was around 0.004500 i´m not sure if the m48 is as accurate as your measuring method greetings from germany

I tried one of those 3D Touch clones and couldn't get reliable results from it. I suspect that there is a little bit of luck involved in getting a good one.

Did you factor in the Z positioning accuracy of the printers?

In Canada the crtouch can be had for a third of the price of bl. I think the prusa should be excluded from this because the barrier to entry for most people to buy a prusa is 3 to 4 times the price of printers with similar print quality. I knock prusa alot but if you live in Canada then you'd understand. Plus they haven't evolved at all because they have such market dominance that they don't have to. It's holding the whole consumer level printer market technology back by years because everyone plays flow the leader. Ask yourself this question, when will people without any technical know how be able to buy a printer and plug it in then be able to open a file and press print like you can with an ms word document?

@@AuroraTech I’m one of your subscribers and I looked at all your videos, but I couldn’t find any on the Autolev brand bought from Substanica 3D. I’m a older gentlemen and not the best at the computer. Each time I watch the KZfaq videos they are older and the screens have changed so it is confusing. I’ve watched your videos and you explain thing very well and have had some success with your instructions. I need assistance to get this probe working on my Ender 3. I’m terrible at downloading and getting into my machine. I would appreciate any assistance available in helping me or a place I can get the assistance I need. Thank You keep up the good work

This is not one of the major leveling sensors, but I saw they also have instruction videos on their site: Hardware Installation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etBxgpiEsqmyfp8.html Firmware update: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNmDfpSem77Qkn0.html www.substancia3d.com/AutoLev/

you can discount the pinda because one would have to buy prusa printer to get one. You can get any inductive sensor tho.
