• Can you review my book?
I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and can only accept a small number of books for review. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction.
• Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Lit at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and have lots of American friends. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
• Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 6 years now.
• How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).

A good potential epigraph that I have never seen used: "A drowning man does not worry about rain." - Iranian proverb

I love epigraphs (and this video!) and I've always thought that the one from Frankenstein itself was particularly good. It's from Paradise Lost and goes: Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay/To mould me Man, did I solicit thee/From darkness to promote me? It's so incredibly well fitting for what follows and hits the right angsty note right off the bat.

I think I might have used that one in the old epigraphs video, because it's SO FREAKING GOOD! Frankenstein is just the gift that keeps on giving.

My favourite epigraph is from Gogol's "Inspector general" It is no use to blame the looking glass if your face is awry.

I remember loving the one in Coraline but I can't remember what it was and I don't have the book anymore :( I wrote a draft a couple of years ago that was all about navigating a fictional dream world and I put in the Dumbledore quote "Of course it's happening inside your head, but why on earth should that mean it's not real?" and I was obviously very proud of that one

That's so nice to hear, thank you! I thought I'd have so much more time, which isn't quite true, but I do have a bit more freedom to be flexible and use my creativity when it hits.

Inkheart has so many epigraphs (I remember not getting most because I hadn't obviously read as many books as a pre-teen), I'm really curious to revisit that series now!

This is such an interesting topic! And from the books you've mentioned I've read The Handmaids Tale and Autumn, loved both of their epigraphs. Also, when you mentioned Frankenstein, it reminded me that it also has an epigraph, which I love. It goes: "Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay To mould me man? Did I solicit thee From darkness to promote me?" -Paradise Lost, x, 743-5

Thank you for making this video, I've never heard the term epigraph before but I definitely enjoy them, and it confuses me when people say they skip them as you know the author has put so much thought into their choice and it often adds another layer to the book. I recently read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and in it there were quotes for each chapter instead of chapter names which was really interesting.

I love these kind of videos! I feel like nobody usually pays attention to epigraphs... One of my favourites is from Unwind by Neal Shusterman: "I was never going to amount to much anyway, but now, statistically speaking, there's a better chance that some part of me will go on to greatness somewhere in the world. I'd rather be partly great than entirely useless. - Samson Ward"

One of my favorite quotes that would make a great epigraph: Words are but vague shadows of the volumes we mean - Theodore Dreiser (Sister Carrie)

This is so relevant as I’m currently reading The Handmaid’s Tale for the first time and was very intrigued by the quotes at the front. I haven’t seen some in a long time and didn’t know about epigraphs. Thank you!

Great video idea! The books that come to mind for me are the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. Each book gets its title from a Shakespeare play and there is a quote of that play as the epigraph.

I do agree about quotable writers. I think if I was to ever write a book and add epigraph for it, it might be something from Jane Eyre.

I'm listening to the audiobook of "The Handmaid's Tale" (a reread) in preparation for "The Testaments" too. It's narrated by Elisabeth Moss (Offred in the show) and it's absolutely incredible, would recommend!😍
