My method for making reflectix window coverings for a vehicle. NO Velcro, tape, suction cups, buttons, magnets, elastic...you get my point, necessary. Reflectix stays in place by itself when you have a good template of your window.

Great job! Do you think the reflective surface facing out would be better for keeping temperature down (as I guess black absorbs heat rather than reflecting it?

@@RachelinRealLife they are great. I just got a new car and the temperatures here in the Uk look set to reach 40 to 42degc (in a country where almost nobody has aircon in the home) so this should help keep my car cooler without having aircon permanently on in it

If you lightly mist the window with water, the paper will stick long enough to trace around the outline. Don't use enough to get the paper soggy.

Personally I don't like the combo of heat in the vehicle and the vinyl plastic causing gassing off and really stinking up the car. I appreciate your heads up about the value of plastic for dealing with window moisture/condensation, which made me think of ripstop nylon which deals with moisture pretty well as a possible alternative for someone that doesn't like gassing off vinyl. A little harder to work with maybe, but what I will try. Vinyl does add some heft and insulation value to the reflectix though. . . . I always wanted to get one of those contour gauge things and try that rather than freezer paper. It's a little different help though.

I used to be a picture framer, so I have frequently worked with spray adhesive. I recommend that you spray on a surface like the gravel instead of on the picnic table. The overspray that you get onto the picnic table will attract dust pollen, dirt, seeds, insects, etc. that will make an unpleasant experience for other picnic table users.

Hi Rachel! Great video by the way. I appreciate you taking the time to cover all the bases from materials to construction to previous problems encountered. You've convinced me I don't need tape or spray paint which I'm extremely thankful for. I'm going to take your advice and get the Loctite glue. Do you remember how many cans (or ounces) you used and how many windows (or square feet) it covered? You also mention using the pvc material instead of fabric because of condensation. I was just going to find some cheap fabric at a thrift store and go that route. I'm wondering what exactly the problem was you were having with condensation. Was it the potential for mold, weakening of the glue or something else? Thanks so much in advance and safe travels!

Good job Rachel! Would it be easier to trace the rear window using from the outside first? Then cut it and bring it inside and do the final fit because the pattern from the outside will be much larger than the inside. Thus, it gives you extra edge to trim down to the right inside. But what ever works best for you is the way to go!😉 Catch you later!

I had some furniture delivered and part of the packaging were sheets of about 5/16 the inch styrofoam. I glued this styrofoam to one side of the reflectix to increase its R value ( some). I came across thin sheets of fabric like black paper and glued it to the styrofoam side. This is the "stealth" side. The result of doing this , which I like, is that the panels are rigid. The styrofoam does help as I did an experiment and the difference in heat transmission was quite noticeable.

Nothing like custom... I took some off the shelf fold up window shades, seam ripped them, changed the shape to fit my rear windows, then re-sewed the seam. I landed on the metal once, and broke a needle, but got it done... I may add some neodymium magnets inside fabric tabs to keep them even more secure. Simple reflectors work great to reject the radiant heat, and my car stays way cooler!

i used black spray paint 😪. i used the kind thats meant to bond to plastic and its good. i couldnt chip the paint even if i tried. i think as long as you don’t do too many coats, spray paint should be fine. its a paint and primer in one and also has a flat/matte finish. maybe other types are more likely to chip.

@RachelinRealLife

If it does, it might only help a little. From my understanding, to work well for insulation, there would need to be two layers with a gap in between.

the reflectix blocks infrared radiant heat loss. The thickness would slow conductive heat loss to a degree, depending on thickness. Gaps (air spaces) enhance conductive insulation, but... much of the heat loss is from the radiant heat, so the conductive heat loss is less a factor.
