The supercharged 6.2L V8 engine powering the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat won a Ward's Auto 10 Best Engines award for 2015. The engine produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, and it's ready to smoke some tires! The supercharger alone is 2.4 liters, and takes 80 horsepower to run at full tilt.
I'll be taking you through the engine specifications, engine bay layout, and cool features of the engine on the 2018 Dodge Hellcat widebody, which uses the same engine as the award winning 2015 Hellcat.

Well to be fair close to 25mpg is confirmed from these Hemis if you can stay outta the pedal (good luck), and considering a V6 ford ecoboost realisticallly gets mpgs in the low 20s I'd say that's a good sign

Since 2015 everyone feels special after beating a hellcat just like how it is for GT-R since 2008. For me, hellcat is a true carguy type of car with supercar levels of power from factory and tuner levels of customizations and upgrades that you can do yourself in your garage. i personally own a 2018 challenger hc, it is my 3rd challenger (after Gt and Scatpack) if you want a car with all in one, go for Charger hellcat, a nice 4 door practical sedan with 700+ hp, a lot of space inside and comfortable seats. as mentioned it is capable of emptying gas tank in 13 minutes on full throttle, on the other hand if you run on eco mode you can get ~24-25mpg on a highway. Enjoy these cars before ev's take over and V8s disappear.

Your reply is the exact reason I left shelbys amd went with a `22 charger hcwb. It truly is a fam muscle car. My 8yo loves it. Next year they will be gone. I’m glad a decided not to wait. Getting a 23 will mostly be very hard and orders will fill up quicker than they did for the 22`s.

Damn what a dream car! I live in Germany and would love a high powered American car, but unfortunately they are all incredibly expensive, even the base models without much power since they are very exotic here. They have to be imported from the USA and go to very special and strict registration process and they need quite a few parts changed to be road legal in Germany/Europe. This makes them 50%-100% more expensive then in the USA.. Even messed up worktrucks with a V8 cost at least 10k even rusted and with 250k miles and clapped out bushings etc. The us car market is very unfortunate here :( The problem is that you don’t get the euro cars cheaper, BMWs etc are way more expensive then in the USA if you look at the factory pricing, don’t ask me why.. I have a V8 it’s my Mercedes 500SL R129 Roadster from 1989 which is also very cool and I love driving it! But I still desire an fast American car and would swap them in a heartbeat. Also I have two bmw e36 with the amazing inline six engine and manual transmission. Those are amazingly fast and nimble cars who feel amazing in corners and on the track and are very lightweight thats why I love them and wouldn’t give them away! Bit since the US cars are the complete opposite, power cruisers with great comfort, but unbelievably high hp numbers and that always fascinated me a lot and I dream about such a car :) Have fun with your Hellcat! I really envy you and wish one day to at least have a drive in one, even if it’s the passenger site I’d be fine. Enjoy your weekend and best regards from Germany :)

It really makes me think of how much engineering and modifications have to be made to the power plant to make it reliable at high power levels. A lot of people just go bolting things on without addressing and upgrading all the other components that would be affected by the additional pressures.

So many criticize them for the weight, but don't consider how quick they are and speaks volumes for the gen3 hemis. 2jz is nothing special, its fame comes from being one of the first engines to exploited turbos which back in the 90's wasn't understood so people falsely equated its hp number to the engine, end of the day its a 3.0L that weighs 600lbs (LS1 is 425lbs) the deck is not that strong and if you magnafluxed any of those high hp blocks you'd see stress cracks, the heads don't flow anything special, low red line because of a heavy long stoke crank, and even though its forged the rods are still thiner then any of the forged muscle car engines from the 60's.
@danielrouw2593
@danielrouw2593 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be Frank I'm Leary about using my name. It's about more than just numbers like that. The 2j is an inline six when most were going to v6, its a well balanced engine that thrives in the higher rpms. Rods may be thinner but that doesn't make them weaker, is the metal the same? Never heard that the deck was weak. The low red line is not the engine, but the ECM unable to keep up. All the same it is a great engine, although a bit heavy.
@eaglefat9398
@eaglefat9398 6 жыл бұрын
Im not saying its bad, but its a cultural icon that doesn't necessarily make it a great engine, kinda like the small block Chevy was for 50 yeas even though just about every other GM v8 was a better engine Buick,Pontiac,Oldsmobile,Cadillac big and small block were almost all better engineered but chevy got the love . Same with 2jz most iron block engine can make those numbers if you gave it the same attention (except for a few duds) Not to mention 2jz cars were never fast for there power until recently.

the LTG 2.0L is GM's best engine in many areas, its a aluminum block that can handle 750hp on stock sleeves which is far stronger then any aluminum LS engines. Forged crank/rods, oil squirter on the pistons, duel stage oil pump to keep correct presser under a wide load range, VVT, direct injection, its even been test up to 9,700rpm on stock lifters, im not even getting to half of its crazy features

Yeah - 2 million hours must be simulated. I don't even see them making 1000 engines for testing purposes - that's just not realistic.
@jaydunbar7538
@jaydunbar7538 6 жыл бұрын
Eric Fontaine it's actually very realistic, testing of that nature is not only done to prove reliability but also to make sure they don't spend unnecessary money on building them.
@texastriguy

Jay Dunbar As a physicist I understand far better than most WHY the testing is done. But making 1,000 engines to test and destroy when only 30,000 or so will ever be made is ridiculously wasteful. In fact, it is likely that the entire Hellcat program is losing money...

Wait, you want to take the last-of-its-kind true muscle car, put it through diet camp, and make it more like... Camaro or Mustang - a sports car? Nah thanks, I'll take fat, heavy, big Challenger over the two any day of the week. The last good-for-straight-sprints-only muscle car of American industry - it should stay just the way it is. If it ever rivals Camaro / Mustang in cornering agility, it'll be a sad day for American car history, when the last true muscle car died. And I'll cry because I couldn't get one before they were destroyed by green terrorism / sports car kids.

Basic utilitarian design for performance cars, all useless weight needs to go, and Dodge's have a LOT of useless weight considering they are several hundred pounds heavier than their competitors. That said the real reason the Hellcat/Challenger/whatever will not lose weight is likely the existence of the ACR.

It's a powerful engine but power per size... the average Ford Ecoboost makes MORE torque per liter than this engine. The next Ford GT will make near this power out of a 3.5 Liter I'll still take this car over any ricer. I am just merely pointing out that while it is a high output engine, it isn't any marvel for that output based on it's displacement given the tech of modern engines.

The engine is special because you have a WARRANTY for over 700 horsepower out of the factory (800 for the demon). Think about that for a minute, you can beat on this engine for 5 years or 60K miles and you are covered if the engine blows up. Anyone can build a high horsepower engine, but how many can build it with a warranty of 5 year/60K miles?
