The best purchase i've ever made. I was a bit hesitant to sell my Dual Rec but the EVH slays it. I found myself playing the EVH all the time, and once I went to the Dual Rec it just did sound as open and specially for leads. Hence, I could not find a reason in keeping the Dual Rec when the EVH does everything better. BTW, no need for my Ibanez tube Screamer any more.

I adore this amp. I love all the glass that's in it while still giving that power amp sag. The El34 valves are perfect for this thing. I like how the blue channel is British and crunchy while the red channel is more modern. I mean, there's a reason Gojira uses this amp. Although, I should mention that I use the 100 watt version. Not sure how different this version is from mine...

@@thomasfokas That's kinda the whole point though, the amp is supposed to sound closer to a Plexi/JCM800 than the normal 5150III does, and those amps sounded best with a boost or OD in front. If you want the blue channel to sound like it does on the 6L6 or Stealth... buy the 6L6 or Stealth instead. Complaining that an amp that's supposed to sound different sounds different is a fool's errand.

Okay, so I'm looking for a bit of advice from those of you guitarists who are in the loop. I've played in a number of metal bands throughout the late 1980s through the 1990s, then life took over, family, kids, etc... I used to own a 50 watt Marshall JCM800, and couldn't begin to count how many live shows I put that amp through. That same amp head also served as my practice amp. Eventually I had to pawn that amp for money, and have been seriously considering psychological therapy ever since just to find out WTF I was thinking! Anyway, I'm now at 55 years old and embarking on my mid life crisis, and want to get into another band. Either that or go out and get a 19 year old girlfriend, but my wife seems to think getting back into a band might be the better option. However, the only amp I own now is a little Yamaha practice amp, definitely not suitable for anything other than practicing alone and recording. Amps have come a long long way since I've been out of the loop, so I'm looking for some advice as I shop for a new amp head to be able to play live with a band. I'm looking to be able to go from an AC/DC sound to a more modern metal tight low end sound like Five Finger Death Punch, and a few sounds in between. Any advice on such an amp head? Or does such an amp not exist?
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 2 жыл бұрын
Well.... I just turned 48, and I would TOTALLY recommend at least trying the 19 year old girlfriend ;) But my recommendation... The Hughes & Kettner GrandMeister Deluxe 40. It's tube, compact, and goes from the best of cleans to the gnarlyiest of the dirty. Has a built in boost, effects, and redbox direct out that sounds great if you want to record direct. 40 Watts is plenty to push a cab and get over the loudest of drummers. I have a couple videos using that. I recorded a cover of Home Sweet Home using that amp. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oeCiateHmtK8XXk.html And another demo here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/juCcZdyd3qzOk6s.html . But I honestly feel like it's still the most feature rich, versatile amp you can get your hands on.

I have the combo which is cool for the attenuator on it. I have bought other amps including the 6l6 evh , dsl,s. Randalls and other marshalls. This evh el34 wins every time for me. Im glad I never sold it because I would regret it. I like the blue channel with my fulltone ocd(germanium). It won all of my shootouts. I just wish channel 1 had its own eq and channel 2&3 shared an eq with concentric knobs

You are spot on with channel 2 really showing off the el34s, the low end is sometimes unmanageable and will need an OD most of the time. And also how the 2 and 3 channels are voiced completely different, unlike the 6L6 version.

Ah. Now I see the issue. Your Presence is way too low while your Treble is way too high. And yes, you want to have your "Green/Orange" channels to be VERY influenced by something like a Tube Screamer. That gets you into the Cadillac tone realm of a JVM or maybe even an Engl Special Edition. Want even more options? Throw an EQ pedal into the effects loop. A HUGE bonus of this head is that you get an effects loop and a 4-button footswitch with which to control it.

Great demo man! Contrary to what a lot of people think -- I actually am interested in this amp for its clean tones as well as its molten metal tones. I've been heavily considering this one as well as the 6L6 version. Your demo kind of has me questioning whether I'd want the EL 34 version -- mainly because of the cleans. While I thought the slightly broken-up cleans sounded great -- that's not really how I use my cleans. I like my cleans really clear with a lot of reverb and sometimes delay piled on top. Based on your demo, it seems like the EL 34 might struggle a little to get that crystal clear clean I'm looking for. If you lower the gain on the clean channel to, say, 8 o'clock, and raise the channel volume, does it clear up and yet maintain adequate volume? I've got a 6505 and 6505+, and generally know how to get the best cleans possible out of them -- but it's still a compromise. I'm looking for a head that can get both crazy extreme metal tones and crystal clear cleans...
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 жыл бұрын
I think you can pull it back far enough. And rolling off your volume on your guitar helps a bit as well. But for me when I got it as clean as I would maybe want it I felt I started to lose the fatness and warmth I wanted in the cleans. I'm not saying it wasn't usable or even bad, it's just what it is, and typically many modern high gain heads have trouble achieving that crystal clean chimey clean channel many of us love. But I think with more fiddling I could probably get where I could be happy with it. But being you're familiar with the 6505 which has a less than inspiring clean channel I think you'll be able to make this work!

Maybe you've played one, but the Mesa Multiwatt 100w/50w Dual Rectifier is pretty damn versatile. Channel One, has both clean and pushed modes, the first of which is a glassy, full, rounded Fender amp tone which would be what you're looking for... and then the fun starts on Channel Two and Three!!!

Great demo, you said what many others who have played this amp feel, that the blue channel simply doesn't have enough gain to be useable and enough high end to cut through. It's round flubby mud no matter how you dial it in. Red is killer though. I was really disappointed when I first plugged in because I was looking forward to an el 34 flavored version of the great EVH blue tone but this amp is far from it. I get that they said Ed wanted to voice this amp differently I just think they missed the mark and sacrificed the blue channel in order to have green squeaky clean. Nobody who will buy this amp cares about a clean tone

Not true. I love the blue channel, it's not meant to be the metal channel, but I love it with about medium gain and some extra presence. I think people just are so unfamiliar with the British sound that when they hear EL34 valves, they just run the other direction. I have to say that I prefer EL34 to 6L6. I should mention though that I own the 100 watt version.

Dude that's a tough one. Soldano to me is like the hot chick that's out of my league. I absolutely love them, but I never have had the pile of money to justify dropping on one. But to answer, I'd say I would buy this over the Soldano. At $2250 Street USD for a 2 Channel 25 Watt Head.... VS. $1k-$1100 for the various 5150 iii 50 Watt, I'd personally have to go with the EVH. Good Question, So those are 3 heads that do high gain really well and I assume that's what you're focused on. While all 3 of those are fantastic they are all voiced different. And depending on what 5150 you get those are all voiced different. But I would say the 5150 III's are probably closest to the Powerball sound of the 3 heads you mentioned. But, not enough so that I would say to not get a 5150 iii. If you're the same kind of nerd I am about gear the 5150 III's a fantastic tool to have in the shed.

@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 жыл бұрын
I have not tried that pedal yet, but it's not an emulator it's an overdrive/boost pedal. So there really won't be anything to compare as the purpose of that pedal to push the signal harder going into the amp. If you're interested I have a video about using a boost pedal and what it does. It's using an Ibanez TS-9 but the general purpose of all boost pedals is essentially the same. The features from pedal to pedal change however. Thanks for watching! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r8eBbNyFlcqvhGQ.html

@guitardave 6 жыл бұрын
GearZombie I’d have to disagree there - the demo’s that I’ve heard of the EVH pedal all say that it’s basically the 5150 amp in pedal form, to be used in front of a clean amp, which is why I was wondering just how close to the actual amp it can sound. It would be great to hear a direct comparison vs this awesome new el34 EVH amp.
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you have seen it that way. Just because its run into a clean channel of an amp does not make it any less of an overdrive pedal. Which is why it says "Overdrive" right below the switch on the pedal and the boost switch. You can run a ts-9 into a clean channel of a tube amp and saturate the sound however not to the degree of the mxr. If I crank my TS-9 into the clean channel of a hughes and kettner triamp and achieve a marshall plexi sound that doesn't make it a Marshall Plexi in a box pedal. The difference between different overdrive/boost pedals is the dynamic range of the pedal itself. They all push and saturate but at different levels with different characteristics which is why they don't all sound the same. It's just a super hot overdrive pedal with the addition of other features like a gate and various sound and tone shaping properties. Did I make any sense? Not saying it's not an incredible sounding pedal. You should also take a minute to look at demos of the Horizon Devices Precision Overdrive Pedal. I know Peter Thorn has a great demo where he's running it through a clean channel. While he's not a super high gain player he gets on it hard enough to prove the point. There are several others that push that pedal from very little to no gain and achieve higher gain sounds.

guitardavept I've owned the pedal. It has tons of gain, it's basically a distortion pedal. I also owned the 5153 50 watt at the same time as the pedal. Extremely close in tone. A boost, NO. As a matter of fact, when I tried it it as a boost, it really didn't work in the traditional way I always use one...level high, gain low to none. Also, the pedal did not clean up well imo. It is designed to give gain, and it does it well. The 5153 50 6l6 was dark imo.

Hey! I just watched your videos. I've never played the 100 Watt but yeah it would seem the Blue channel on the 100 watt has a lot more attack and less squish than what I was finding with the 50 Watt.

GearZombie yeah the 50 6l6 is totally different from the 100 6l6 too I find ,every EVH seems to have its own flavour

MarkKiddGuitar it’s a similar difference from the standard original EVH to the 5o more glassy less fatness and roundness

Why the fuck is it that every adjustment you make especially the mids and highs, and resonance is either on 1, or 12? WTF???

V30s are pretty standard for basic amp testing.

DarkSim77 V30s are standard for metal. However I like to mix V30s with G12T-75s, Bogner’s Uberkab has them (G12T-75s and V30s) in an X-Pattern in a 4x12” cab. Friedman is great too with 2 X Greenbacks on top and V30s on the bottom in a 4x12”. There is also a Peavy 2x12” with a G12T-75 and a V30 as well.

markmaccabees I traded in my cabs and got an EVH 4x12 it has four 20 watt Greenbacks but I think they are Heritage ones and made in UK. That’s what I read in reviews in anyway. All I know is that the cab is perfect for my 50 Watt EVH 5150 III EL34 Head. Those speakers break up so good and they aren’t even fully broken in yet. I couldn’t be happier with this cab.

I have repented and entered into the new life, but not am sure this is an effective way to share the gospel, or steer a conversation into spiritual issues. It is a guitar gear thread on KZfaq.
