NEW ORLEANS: Welcome to Tremé, New Orleans, and today we’re eating at Willie Mae’s Scotch House (goo.gl/maps/Ps9oFrEZNJssQwxc8), one of the most historical restaurants in New Orleans known for their amazing soul food and serving some of the best fried chicken in the United States!
Willie Mae’s Scotch House originally started in 1957, but it didn’t start as a full restaurant like it is today. Instead, it was a barbershop, salon, and a bar. With the bar customers came a demand for food, and soon their food became famous - so well known that the food took over and it was turned into a restaurant. In 2005, Ms. Willie Mae Seaton was awarded with a James Beard award for “America’s Classic Restaurant for the Southern Region.” This prestigious award opened new doors and really put Willie Mae’s Scotch House on the map across the United States. Ms. Willie Mae Seaton has since passed away, but her legacy of delicious food and caring for the community will never be forgotten.
I ordered a number of fried chicken plates all coming with different sides. Let me first tell you about the fried chicken - battered and deep fried. But the batter didn't feel too heavy or caky, and what I liked the most is that when you bite down, the entire skin crispiness doesn’t all come of, but rather stays on the chicken. The chicken was so moist and juicy and the flavor was salty with a hint of spice. Willie Mae’s Scotch House has been named the best fried chicken in America, and I’m not going to argue!
The sides were also delicious, I loved the beans and rice, the green beans and the fried okra. Amazing fried chicken, delicious Soul Food side dishes, and a preservation of New Orleans history and culture.
Price - $15 per plate

The only people that care about and mention hurricanes that much are out of towners. We don’t care. It’s just hurricanes. We aren’t the only ones that have to deal with them and rebuild. Houston, Florida the entire coast etc. Appreciate the comment but that narrative is kind of aggravating and I hate that the media has done that.

@@2iggy_ you're right but NO's civil engineering works against it comes hurricane time as it becomes a city trapped underwater due to the levies thus making it far more dangerous than other cities. And not to mention the cost of rebuild due to the entire place being submerged longer than it should as compared to other places. To me, these are unique challenges that the people of NO have to surmount with much, much more resilience.

Your culture??? Does everything have to be about your culture??? Southern food is more than just a black persons culture...I'm white and me and my family was raised on this type of food...Try not to make it about YOUR people only in life.. Black folks and White folks in the south have for generations eaten foods like this...

@@RayRay002 Yes, our culture. Soul Food isn't just what we eat, it's how it's prepared. That's why you can go to a soul food restaurant and find spaghetti, as one example, on the menu. It won't look or taste anything like what an Italian restaurant would serve, but it's spaghetti just the same. Stop being intimidated by Blk ppl loving and appreciating ourselves. There's enough love for Wht folks in this world without you being bothered by someone sharing the love.

Oh my goodness, my taste buds are tingling just thinking about the fried chicken at Willie Mae's in New Orleans! It's no wonder that this iconic soul food restaurant is renowned for serving up some of the best fried chicken in all of America. From the crispy, golden-brown coating to the tender, juicy meat inside, every bite is pure perfection. And let's not forget about the sides - from the fluffy biscuits to the creamy mac and cheese, Willie Mae's knows how to do comfort food right. I can almost taste the flavors of this soulful feast just by watching this video. If you're ever in New Orleans, Willie Mae's is an absolute must-visit for any fried chicken lover!

I've been watching Mark Wiens for years with utter enjoyment. No matter the video, you know when he is at the apex of his satisfation is when he leans back and to his right. The further back and to the right he goes is when you know he's in culinary heaven. I've been to Willie Mae's and it's the best fried chicken I've ever had without a close second. Mark didn't feature the collard greens but they were freaking unbelievable. The cornbread was also the best I've ever had.

I love New Orleans. It's a special place in my heart. My Mom who just died on Sept. 14th 2021 would go to New Orleans each year with my Grandpa in August. He would buy her a new dress in NOLA for the upcoming school year and take it back to Oklahoma. Willie Mae's is a place that serves incredibly good food and Grandfather took me there as a young child. It's a place with heart and history that will forever live with me.

I love the painting of Willie Mae and I hope it forever stays in the restaurant. I don't live in America so I'm loving seeing all sorts of places and the history behind the people. I live in New Zealand and I've been lucky to visit America's typical tourist places. The first time was when I was 13 and my sister was 15 as a family we went to Los Angeles, San Diego, New York and Hawaii. On my way to see my sister in England I stopped over at San Francisco for a week. I wish that I could of spent time in places off the beaten track to get to know the locals and experience their way of life. This is one of the reasons I really love watching Mark's videos, he is an outstanding guy, Ying is great at multi-tasking and the glimpses we see or hear from Micah are treasured. It sort of feels like the Weins are a part of my family and I can imagine many more people who feel the same. One man has bought so many people together not just the people he shares a meal with but all of us loyal subscribers as well. There are not many people who can do that. Those of you that got to the end of my message thank you and I sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are doing well especially with Delta Covid attacking the world. Xx

@@eazydazit thank you, your words have come at a time when I needed them most. The reason (I'll try not to waffle on) is because 14 months ago I lot my Mum to cancer and on the 27th of January this year I found my Dad has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep. Eleven years ago when I was 32 my life long specialists gave me two years at the most to live which was realistic considering my extensive health history so we all thought that I would pass first. I've always been extremely close with my parents and when it became too dangerous medically for me to live alone I moved back home. I have to fight to overcome all of my medical issues but having my parents fight with me and for me made it a lot easier. It's a difficult time but I want to keep fighting for both my parents and myself because I take my parents with me everywhere in my heart. I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well and that you have a great life. You deserve all the kindness in the world because I feel that you are empathetic and I suspect that at times you feel a strong urge to reach out even to a stranger to share your kindness and caring thoughts. Thank you for doing that for me. Xx
