This is the fry grow-out that I created to reduce the amount of work it takes to successfully raise killifish fry. This system will work with any small fry. it is heavily inspired by Master Breeder Dean. Please comment below if you have any questions about how the system works. My Hope Is someone will make a better system based on mine.

I love using algae with my fry too! I find it hides them very well and holds an incredible amount of microorganisms.

this is just the kind of inspiration i was looking for! thanks!! i have been toying with the idea of using polycarbonate food pan trays for fry growout, taking inspiration from you and Dean I think i'll build a PVC board food pan rack to slide each fry pan out and in like a set of dresser drawers, driven by a dc pond pump for variable flow control and dripping back down into a 4ftx2ft flood and drain tray i am using to culture live blackworms - i'm going to put my overflows on the front to better monitor the outflow rate in case of a clog and probably use 3/8" RO tubing and quick connects with ball valves

Gunna comment as I taped to see what the vid was about. A container is a container (cuase .. aussy mindset) I put 3 30lt flat containers together to grow aquaponic seedlings... Turned out that they are great for raising fish as your vid is showing :) it has no filter, mediums or air bubbler
@pyleaquatics
@pyleaquatics 8 ай бұрын
If you really understand what's going on, your system does have a biological filter unless you clean it before beneficial bacteria has a chance to grow. Every surface that is wet is your filter.

Hmm... I have that same shelf in my garage. I wonder if my wife would be mad if I got rid of all the towels and blankets to put one of these in. But seriously, this is an awesome setup. I'm guessing that with all that moss you don't add salt? Do you ever have problems with velvet? I'm new to this but most things I've read make it sound like velvet is a common issue.
@pyleaquatics
@pyleaquatics Жыл бұрын
So far I've never had a problem with velvet. I don't add any salt either. However if I decided to add salt it would never be in a high enough concentration to affect the plants for algae.

Awesome setup I am totally going to steal your idea. Is your light enough for the moss and do the fry enjoy more of the darker light? How much did it cost you to set up? How is your success rate with your fry?
@pyleaquatics
@pyleaquatics Жыл бұрын
I am growing some moss in the tubs. You could put a light behind it to help if needed in your setup. I haven't added up the cost. My fry success is much better than it used to be by just changing water every day in each tub. The growth rate is really good. It's easier to make sure there is always food available without worrying about food rotting and fouling up the water.

What types of fry do you grow in your system? The water change system would save a ton of time. What do you feed your fry? Is there a variety of food you feed?
@pyleaquatics
@pyleaquatics Жыл бұрын
@@davidcampbell4050 I have grown out a few species of Nothobranchius and a severe axolotl. My success rate is far better than it was. I feed infusoria, vinegar eels, mico worms, and baby brine shrimp. They are also feed some processed fry food if I'm in a hurry.

I’m new to all this fish thing but interested in how this kind of stuff is done in shops, all you have done is swap glass tanks for plastic tanks. So am I right in thinking, you have a pond pump, pumping water into the tanks, which then over flow and the cycle start again? How would you add heat to all this if needed? How do you decide on the flow of water to the plastic tanks? Suppose you could use the main bottom tank to grow plants?
@pyleaquatics
@pyleaquatics 8 ай бұрын
Some of that is answered in the video. Heating would be easy. You just stick a heater in the bottom sump.
