Today I made use of an old iPad Air that wasn't getting much use by mounting it to my wall to serve as a controller for my smart home. This is a review and installation of the VidaMount On-Wall Slim Tablet Mount made by VidaBox.

Thank you for your polite response. At the same time as my criticism about the distracting music, I’d like to add that you present beautifully, professionally, faultlessly and I that follow all your videos which are invaluable to anyone setting up their smart home. I am most grateful. I wish you every success. It’s just that I have this thing about annoying music which for me is the curse of You Tube! But then again I’m 73 so it’s probably best you ignore my personal opinion and just carry on with the great work that you do !!

Shane, For less than 200 subs your videos are top notch! The editing quality and content is great. I'm about to get into making my apartment Homekit enabled. I've been watching all your videos and just wanted to say don't stop!!! I'm so glad Apple opened up the requirements for smart devices to be Homekite capable. We're starting to see more and more companies hop on the Homekit train (except for Nest of course...).

Thomas, thank you very much for the compliment and support! Yes, I agree, it's a great time to go all in with HomeKit. As more and more companies add support, the competition will continue to drive down prices and create more options for us consumers. Good luck with your smart home setup and thanks for watching!

Great video! Just FYI, your ipad cord running through the wall does not meet code. If there was a fire and the insurance company did their research (possibly found this video) you could run into issues. Simply installing a recessed outlet behind the ipad would fix this.

@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I don't know if there is a way with this mount specifically to run a cable through. I'm sure you can probably rig it up somehow or make a cutout for the cord. Otherwise, there are lots of other mounts out there that do allow for that.

Thanks Clayton! I have actually looked at both of those thermostats. The price of the Sensie is certainly appealing, however I do not think it supports occupancy/temperature room sensors like the Ecobee does. That is a feature that I will probably be looking for when I do upgrade. Definitely on the wish list!

I know this is an old video but how did you solve the at home status issue of the iPad? I made a child account and set it up with my iPad, now my secure video camera will not turn on when I am away because it thinks someone is still home (set it to turn off when I’m home). Hey Shane, what are the cameras sending the feeds? Btw, i have Ecobee4 & room sensor but honestly at the end of the day in my home automation, i just need a smart capable thermostat. Keeping with your on a budget theme, there are just as a capable thermostats for much less. Is it cool that Alexa is built in... sorta however they don’t tell you that Alexa speaker can’t be part of a speaker group... so when i play music to the all speakers group, no Audio can be played on any of the 3 thermostats, 2 of which where i don’t have speakers in that area. I can’t use that speaker to announce when doors open or close, when the wife gets home etc.. like i can on all the other echo dots b/c it doesn’t show up an option. So I would suggest check the Honeywell Lyric Tstats.. they are about 1/2 the price & HomeKit compatible.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon. I still haven't gotten a smart thermostat, so I'm still looking. I figure I could benefit from he room sensors since my living room, for example, has high ceilings and the temperature can vary quite a bit from there and the bedrooms. However, I do not need Alexa built in since I don't use Alexa anymore. For those reasons, I've been considering the Ecobee 3 lite which is a little cheaper too. But I will certainly take a look at the Honeywell Lyric as well. Thanks for the suggestion! To answer your question, my camera system is an inexpensive 8-channel dvr camera system by Annke bought from Amazon a few years ago. It is all wired and records to a hard drive locally, which is what I wanted. I didn't want to get locked into some cloud storage service or pay anyone else for monitoring. But now that HomeKit Secure Video is a thing, chances are I will start looking into cameras that support this new feature as well.
@brandonculler8550
@brandonculler8550 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the best feature about the ecobee (IMO) is the remote sensor. My son’s room, daughters room & our master bedroom is all on the 2nd floor. The kids rooms are the exact same size, but my sons room is always warmer in the summer & colder in the winter (blows my mind on a 3 year old all brick house, but anyway). The Ecobee thermostat is in the master bedroom (where we have 3 vents). In the summer I use the remote sensor in my sons room as the only temperature reading for Ecobee to cool the upstairs, otherwise we would freeze my son our in the summer. In the Winter, i make my daughters room & our master do the average.. otherwise it could be really hot in our rooms trying to use my sons room as part of the equation. Shy of an electronic damper, i don’t know how else i would address this situation.

Hello, first of all, thank you very much for the video. Do you know if there is the possibility of turning on the ipad when the camera detects movement? Thank you very much
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 жыл бұрын
Not using the camera. But I have since set this up in a round-about way. First, I turned on "guided access" to the iPad and "lock" it in the home app. Then I use a homekit motion sensor close by. In the Home app, I make sure to turn on notifications for that motion sensor. The iPad will eventually go to sleep, but will be waken up every time the motion sensor detects motion. Hope that makes sense.

Shane Whatley Im trying to figure where to start... it’s still a bit expensive here for hue lights for ex... and even if I buy those, I’d need to have a “smart” switch/dimmer right? Here in Brazil (Mainly in Rio, where I’m from), is hot/warm the whole year, and we do use fan ceiling fan, but the switch for it is the same that is used to lights :(
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 4 жыл бұрын
Paulo Ricardo actually you don’t need switches for hue lights. You can use Siri, automations, or your phone to control them. But if you want to make all your lights smart, and they already have wall switches, I’d recommend Lutron caseta smart wall switches if they work in your area. Smart switches are better than smart bulbs when the light is connected to a wall switch. Then you don’t have to change light bulbs and can use existing ones. Lutron also makes a wall switch for ceiling fans. They are a little pricey but super reliable and worth the money.
@PauloRicardo-Sh
@PauloRicardo-Sh 4 жыл бұрын
Shane Whatley thx for the answer and forgive me for the long time I took to answer. What I wanted to say is something you said in one of ur videos, about that if someone switch off the switch, by not knowing that it’s “smart”, it will cut off the energy, right?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 4 жыл бұрын
Paulo Ricardo yes that is true when using smart light bulbs. That’s why I prefer to use smart wall switches when possible because you can still use the wall switch without disconnecting your lights from your smart home.

Larry Bradshaw that’s actually just an inexpensive hardwired dvr camera system that I set up a couple of years ago. Nothing special. Mopar Rock it is pretty secure. This particular one has 7 snap button-like fasteners that attach the font plate. Of course it doesn’t move or get messed with at all on the wall.
