Just wanted to say I'm so happy I found your channel Robert. I have been working with dogs professionally now for over 7 years working in kennels/daycares and grooming salons. I found your video about the rant about dogs walking off leash and I've been binging your channel ever since. I love your approach to training because I also believe in a balanced approach as I have worked with all kinds of different breeds of dogs in large pack settings of 30+ dogs. Positive reinforcement was always the only thing pushed in training videos that we would watch and that was the general we've always been told to approach dog disclipline/training. My peers have always been impressed by how well I can manage a large pack of dogs and keep them calm and stay in control. That's all because of the balanced approach I use in the yard. I love your no bs approach and overall mentality and I think what you're doing is great. You make me highly consider looking into dog training as a future career. I have tried working many other types of jobs, but in the end I always end up working with dogs again, and it's honestly hard to see myself doing anything else. Thanks for all the words of wisdom Robert. Now back to binging your videos.

Hey! Can you cover food aggression and why it occurs? I'm uncertain what to do speaking my dog just started to develop it. I've been trying to give her specified meal times and I avoid eating around her. Yet she still claims the water dish or gets aggressive if a cat walks by while she's eating.

How about ways to help your dog better understand leash walking through teaching tips, rather than assistance for a more effective correction. Pulling to the side/correcting has greater effect than pulling back, especially if the dog is pulling.

What I do I feed the leash through the loop and than I put my hand through the loop I created I tighten the leash around my wrist before choking the leash. So now even if the dog can pull the leash out of your hand it won't pull from my wrist

Well you make this look so easy. My dog, an adoption from "death row" looks a lot like the dog in your video. I have hired a trainer and had no success .. all I want to doing is go for a walk with my dog. The difference I see in your video is that you actually have your dog's attention. My GSD has developed a tendency to crowd me while we’re walking and I’m constantly trying to not step on her. How can I correct this?

I’ve heard some trainers say not to put your thumb, wrist, or any part of your hand through a looped leash because you could end up getting injured and even losing the leash at the same time if your thumb gets dislocated by a powerful dog that gets spooked, attacked by another dog, or other situations where the dog may try to bolt (it can be difficult to control even the best trained dog when something unusual happens out of nowhere suddenly). I’ve seen other trainers say it’s best to use the technique that people use to walk alongside horses on leads, similar to the second method you used with a leash folded over with a leash lock where the leash is folded - because there’s no chance of you getting injured in the process, which then makes it possible to get things under control. Thoughts on that? The argument is that injured person can’t possibly get a bad situation under control and keep their dog from possibly bolting. Is there any reason to be concerned about getting injured and/or losing the leash as a result by holding the leash the first way, and if not, why do you feel that way? If there was a stray dog that came up from behind that neither you or your dog saw, for instance, you can’t possibly react fast enough. We all should be aware of our surroundings, but we can’t possibly see everything. I’d love to hear your take on that. I think most people would like to hold the leash with the thumb inside the loop (myself included), but there is a valid concern too, so I’ve always avoided it. I was personally taught to hold the leash in two hands. I am disabled and found a helpful tool back in 2017 called LeadMate that attaches onto any leash and makes it easier to grip and control (they are still sold today!). My leash skills really improved by that because there’s no chance of the leash slipping from my hand since there’s a secure large grip to hold onto. I walk my boy mostly on my right due to the way I need him to assist me, so I hold the LeadMate in my right hand and use the folded leash method in the left hand. I am able to correct properly without any trouble (it’s actually easier). Have you ever seen a LeadMate before? The trick to using it properly is to ensure it’s attached in a way where you only have a couple of feet between the end of the leash and the lead mate. I’ve found that it’s a great tool. I have one on every leash I own - fits onto my thick leather service dog leashes nicely, as well as thin Nylon leashes up to an inch wide.

I would have thought most of us hold the leash with our power hand and correct with our left (if we're right handed). As some dogs can be surprisingly strong for their size. Where it's just easier to control them using our power hand. If need be. Also most of us opt for the FLexi brand retractable leashes for convenience. But those are the types of leashes that are more likely to jump out of our hands if the dog suddenly decides to run and we're distractied. Holding the leash a little less tight than we should be or normall y do. Odd no one's made a retractable leash using bungie cord rope. I have the rope leash as well as the Flexi (which has a light on it...convenient).

There's a reason for walking your dog on the left side! Most people are right handed and would put their huntin rifle on the right shoulder (so it's a tradition).

So honest question for those of us who don't live in the People's Republic of California. Right handed folks carry their defensive tools where their right hand can access them. One can't expect to have free access to tools with their right hand if there is a leash handle wrapped around their right wrist. How would you suggest we free Americans hold the leash in that case? I usually put the loop around my left wrist and then hold the slack off the leash in my right hand. That way I can drop the leash from my right hand and still have my dog tethered to my left.

Why are you focusing so much on the "the dog doesn't get away from me"? And you are putting your hand into the loop. It's a safety nightmare in my opinion. My mother did the same with my dog. A 1-year-old 40kg White Swiss Shepherd. During the walk, they were attacked by street dogs. And yes, my dog defended them, he made two steps forward, but my mom was on the other end of the leash. She tried to hold my dog back, but couldn't. But she also was unable to let the leash go because it was around her hand. So she felt. At this moment, my dog tried to escape and dragged her to one side. So she didn't only felt down, but was also dragged around. Same for me, now is winter and some roads are full of ice and slippery. I don't care, if the dog get away from me, but I don't risk to fall down, if the dog start to pull for any reason.

But I disagree with a few things,but you are more talented and knowledgeable than the majority of trainer's that I've seen!( No need to be critical about anything!
