How to train your dog not to jump on people is a basic skill that all dogs and puppies should learn from an early age. It can be dangerous for small children or older people. Dogs that jump on people usually do so because of two issues: insecurity or dominance. Even though it can be a playful behavior, it is something that should controlled. In this video lesson I show you how to teach your dog not to jump up on you or other people.

Wow! I applied the "take her space" method and it worked on our exuberantly jumping Stabihoun within about 30 seconds. It really is, as Robert states, a matter of accepting and embracing the fact you must be in control of your dog.

This is the single hardest thing for me to teach my clients, such a natural behavior and so easy to inadvertently encourage. I have not tried having them step on the leash, Will do this next time, thanks

I work at an animal shelter. We use this method to discourage jumping. Dogs really understand what is being asked. We teach it to our adopters, it’s easy to learn. It’s also a very kind way of solving the problem that doesn’t damage your relationship with your dog . Thanks Robert.

The hardest thing for me is teaching my husband to not use an angry tone. He thinks that is the correct tone every "order command" to the dogs.
@CamilleGG451
@CamilleGG451 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that isn't necessary, rather it can cause stress in dogs. When you've taught a dog a cue, it's a simple command with no emotion behind it. You can watch expert trainers do this all the time in obedience competition, etc. The trick is using a tone consistently as dogs listen to tone more than the word. Meaning, if you say "sit" with an "up-speak" at the end vs saying it flat, for example, that makes a big difference to a dog.

Yep- and that's why anger and yelling and nagging aren't effective. Learning how to teach your dog what each cue means with help from a trainer is the way to go. Engagement-based training is awesome- where you develop a dog who is excited to learn because it's fun for both of you! Otherwise.. I mean, assuming it's not a working dog, why have a dog?
