hi Chris, i found this interesting touch display with integrated esp32 , M5Stack is the name of it. maybe you can do a project using this with WLED, so everyone could control his leds without smartphone, directly from small M5Stack in every room. it has also voice control and wifi. would be great if you make a cool project with it.

@ChrisMaherDIY So I need to buy this setup immediately. Just had my steps installed today and I didn’t even know what cables to run so I ran a single 14ga power cable to the top step and cat6 (23ga) cables for each step. I read below that this is like a WS2811 with 3 copper leads on the LED. But then I read that the ws2815 300led are better? But it has 3 wire connections on the led strip. Can someone please guide me in the right direction. I need to know if I can get the “better” wg2815 from Amazon and if there are any other better ESP32 out there. I also started seeing posts about Quinled. I am now completely lost!!!!!

3:30 Screw terminal connections can become loose over time, even if the wires don't move or are mechanically unloaded. To eliminate this possibility, crimp bootlace ferrules to the wires. Don't tin the wires with solder, that can loosen over time (the solder cold flows under pressure) and it can introduce a weak spot inside the insulation.

If you get some Quinled controller, you can feed your esp from 12V, no need for separate voltage supply for your board. You also get fuse and reverse polarity protection for safety. And level shifter on your data pins

@ChrisMaherDIY , this channel is GOLD. The fast pace is perfect, great camera work and sound quality, intuitive instructions. A question for Chris (or anyone): I am planning to cut a Muzata strip in half to use in 2 8ft tube lights (WLED/esp32), each powered by it's own power supply. 1. Each uncut strip is 60 watts. So I would guess each half is 30watts? 2. The power supply shown in the video is 12v/3amp. Isn't this underpowered, at 36 watts? would a 12v/5amp be more appropriate? 3. Since I am running half strips, presumed to be 30 watts each, do I still need the 12v/3A/36w power supply or can I go smaller like a 12v/2a?) thx for any answers or ideas!

First off your the guy who got me to raise an eyebrow to all this LED lighting stuff while I was searching for PC desk ideas. Thanks! Now I'm always thinking of ways to use it everything. My question is; Is it possible to utilize a single WLED data line for a GPIO pin , directing it to a level shifter, and subsequently daisy-chain the data line on the low side, ensuring the synchronized output of data on the 5-volt side for multiple LED strips? Just a thought I had. I really like your videos they have helped me learn a lot. Any feed back would awesome.

I get 60/m ws2812b ip65 and ip67 for $10-11 in a 5 meter roll. this is only 1.5 times that density for 3 times the price and with a third of the controllability. It is cheaper and easier to power though with the 12volts. 144/m ws2812b in 1 meter strips is $6-7. that's $30-35 for a 5 meter run. that yields 1.5 times this density and 3 times the addressability. That's a lot to power though. Thanks for a different perspective on things. Your videos are always enjoyable and you are very thorough. Thanks for all the hard work. Thanks for this video; I went ahead and bought a roll of this Muzata LED strip and am looking forward to running it with WLED. I have a few questions, though. I can see on the WLED app that there's a field where you enter your power supply voltage and max voltage. Those appear to be set to 5V on the app but you're using a 12V supply. How should those fields be set? Also, in other demos, I've seen that person using a logic level shifter to bump up the voltage of the data signal. You're not doing that here. I assume it's working for you because you have a fairly short distance between the microcontroller and the strip?

Imagine being able to set a motion sensor on every single step if needed and make it work to only stay lit for a few seconds as needed?!!!
@1001hey1001
@1001hey1001 9 ай бұрын
Would require a bit more work to do custom wiring, But you can setup home assistant and setup the wled plugin to control the individual led strips on the stairs. You can use one strip with custom segments in WLED. Then you can setup motion sensors on the top and bottom of the stairs. Then you can setup a custom automation in home assistant to control the animation for the stairs. This will require a bit of programming but chat gpt is pretty useful for home assistant automations but you will probably need to make a few manual fixes to what it outputs. You will need motion sensors that can work with home assistant though.

Follow up question. I would like to wire up some led lights in such a way that I have a main power bus line and then branches of LED lights (picture a tree if you will). If I remove a branch of LED, the others should remain lit. If I am using a total of 5 meters of LEDs lights (the ones you used in this video actually), would I need a different power source or is what you demonstrated enough?

The amperage rating of your supply does not matter for longer lengths of strips. The voltage drops happens due to the current draw, so even if it was a 12V 60A supply it wouldn't have made a difference. All that matters is the resistance, hence why voltage injection helps. If the strips consume what the supply can provide, but you inject voltage along the strips using wires which lower the overall resistance, you should'nt see any drop in brightness.

So if I connect 4 of this stripes (64ft) do I need a different power supply?
@bogmaerke
@bogmaerke 6 ай бұрын
@@HomeCinemaSolutions01 You need a power supply that can supply enough amperage. If one strip uses a maximum of 4A you'd need a >16A supply. Something you have to keep in mind is how the current travels. If you connect them in one single length of strip (4 in a row), you'd likely see a dip in brightness towards the end of the strip if you only supply 12V at one point, even if your supply can deliver twice the required amount. The way to avoid this is to inject voltage, which basically means you take your 12V +/- of the supply and connect it multiple times down the length of your strip. You can probably find some guidelines on how often you need to do this and what gauge of wire you should use for what lengths and currents.

How would you go about using these as primary lighting? Looking at using them under the back patio with an on/off switch for the white LED's for normal lighting, then have the RGB's for parties.
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 9 ай бұрын
Don't use RGB leds for primary lighting - they produce horrible white light. If you want both color and white, buy color and white strips - they're not very expensive. Even "high cri" white strips aren't terribly expensive these days (if you buy them from the correct places - trust me, there are places that will rip you off bigtime). For RGB addressable 5M strips, you should be getting them for $15-$20, and for white, probably like $5-6 - high CRI white will be more like $20-30 but well worth it. None of this is "new" - all of these LED strips have been around for ages

Greg video Chris went on their website and bought 25-meter reels. Have a question though, Chris. For long runs do I have to do injection of both the 12-volt power and the signal? Or just a run of red and black wires for the 12-volt for even brightness?
@BoraHorzaGobuchul
@BoraHorzaGobuchul 9 ай бұрын
No such thing as signal injection. Each led ic sort of boosts the signal. There may be problems when the cable run from the controller to the strip is long, and even for shorter ones when you use different controlling voltage. To overcome such problems if encountered, one needs a level shifter board. Sometimes a "sacrificial pixel" is used for sane purpose, easily Google able.

@ChrisMaherDIY 10 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! These are 12v led and the esp is 5v. Maybe there is away to make it all work together but I know i'm not currently smart enough to figure it out. And even though I've certainly powered 5v led strips only using the esp32, I think the general consensus is that you shouldn't power the 5v led strips only using the micro usb charger that is also powering the esp device.
@fusseldieb
@fusseldieb 9 ай бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY Exactly. Even if you got 5V leds and power everything with one charger, a normal phone charger can provide 3A at most before getting unconfortably hot, which is not a lot of leds @ 5V... You can maybe hook up 3m or so but that's pretty much it.
