I started a perlite prop box after watching one of your earlier videos on it & it’s been the best thing ever for propagating. All I do is just throw random cuttings in there & I’ve had everything root really well. I’m just now getting into Hoya’s so looking forward to getting cuttings to throw in the prop box.

I have to agree 100%. Plants root faster, and transplanting into a different soil mix is much less stressful. Also, because of the amount of roots the plant may have, it does better in a lower humidity after transplanting. (Sphagnum moss for hoya: NO NO NO :))

I agree with this, I propagate my hoya in perlite in a plastic drinking cup (with holes poked in the bottom). I love that I see the roots as they grow, on the sides of the cup, so I know when it's ready for repotting in soil.

Thanks Karen! Any propagation makes someone nervous, but the plant almost always responds very well to cutting. I always say take a small cutting first to see how it roots and how the mother plant responds just so you can get comfortable for large pruning next time.

Good Morning, hope all is well. Thank you for the video which will encourage me to pot the many Hoya cuttings I have growing in water since............who cares🙂 I should give perlite a try but water is cheaper and has always worked for me. Have you ever dealt with algae growing in the perlite? Have a nice weekend

Jeff a couple of years ago I saw a hoya prop video that came from a pro grower I think. They took a pot of soil and inserted stems up to first nde. I get roots in a month and they can stay in the pot and continue to grow. I don't use any other method anymore. I use a spray bottle to mist the soil daily until roots are established.

It's funny how different methods work for others because I have not had good success with just straight soil propagation. The cuttings end up dying for me. I guess it probably comes down to the conditions in your house (light, humidity etc). Thanks for sharing Molly!

I’ve lost a few cuttings that were propagated in water when I transitioned them to soil but so far have had great success rate with pumice propagation. The roots grows around the pumice and I haven’t had any issue leaving them on when potting them. I would like to try perlite but haven’t seen the bigger size perlite like yours in my neighborhood garden centers.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
I've never tried pumice yet. I'm assuming it would be very similar to perlite.

I wish perlite propagation worked for me , I've tried in & out of prop boxes (& different size boxes, from tiny to huge) I have tried where only the perlite was damp, to a one to few inches of water in the box/ containers, I've even tried the bag method. I use water, soil, or moss for propping, & trying Leca for the first time (not impressed so far with leca). I've tried with & without heat mats, in natural sunlight & grow lights during all seasons of the year.. Either the cuttings rot or don't do anything after months of propping.

Everything rots in perlite for you? Wow, that is pretty crazy. See I struggle with the soil propagation....maybe I'll have to give it a try again, but I've never had any issue with perlite. Thanks for sharing Barbie!

Great video!!! I have some Hoyas in water right now but am thinking about trying a box like yours. The perlite I have is very fine…it doesn’t look like yours. Is yours chunky because it’s wet? I have seen chunky perlite so I was just curious as to what works best for your method.

I’ve used your pearlite propagation method successfully. However, I was given a Philo Verrucusom in a baggie that had a few tiny roots. I panicked and put it in sphagnum in a large clear cup. It’s put out 2 new leaves, but I don’t see any roots. Not sure what to do next?

I'd just leave it alone. Eventually it will get roots from the new stem. It has new leaves and is grown .....it will be fine

I am getting some hoya cuttings in the mail soon and bought a bag of sphagnum after watching some videos. I think I'll return it and exchange for perlite :) Can you re-use the perlite again for future propagations? When do you either throw it out or do you just use it as a soil amendment for potting? Thanks!

Hi Jeff! I have recently ordered some hoys from a local (Toronto) nursery. They came in sphagnum moss and I am not sure if ,when I transplant them, I keep them in same or can I use a medium like you have? Years ago I had hoyas and they grew in normal soil.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Petra. Whenever you bring a plant home I always like to let it acclimate to your conditions for a couple months before removing it from the moss. It will be completely okay in the moss and some people grow hoyas long term in that. So give it some time and then when you think it's ready remove the moss and pot up in soil!

I thought the attempt from propagating from a single leaf would result in a zombie leaf. A leaf with roots and nothing else since there isn't any plant tissue to help grow a new plant.
