Red mites are the worst. Or that is what most people call them 😂 But we all mean the same - small, orange/ red, incredibly hard to spot, and they attack new growth. And the dark/ light test works too! Also you can use damp cotton pad and wipe the bottom and tops of the leaves (typically towards the new growth) and you will see them on the white cotton pad. They are tough to kill but what works for me and all the collectors from Sweden (where I got this tip from) is to use sulphur based fungicide (that also works as acaricide). The one I use is called Kumulus. Usually one treatment kills them, but I do it twice. It leaves white deposit on the leaves that you can always see on my hoyas 😂 but I don't care, it kills the bastards. There is a more insidious type of mite that burrows in the tissue of the new growth and that one is basically a death sentence. The Swedish collectors call those top shoot mite, but I am having a hard time pinpointing which exact mite it is 🤔

I rarely ever see them on leaves. Just the stem and around new leaves on the petiole. I'm going to look into the fungicide because honestly they need to DIEEEEEEEEEEEE

When insects get crazy I put a plant into a larger plastic bag lightly spray garden insect spray into it, tie it up and leave for 2 days or more then repeat in 10 to 20 days. Works like a charm.

It was on my triostar, same scenario with me using my flash flight on my phone to inspect my trio star to see why she had browning leaves, saw the orange mite, and then it’s like they vanished and couldn’t see them. I used end all from safers mixed with water. I will usually water with hydrogen peroxide and water as a preventative measure.

I am a soil person. I consider trying leca, but haven't done it yet (something new to learn and I know what I'm doing with my substrates). But I have bought several hoya starts from local peeps that were rooted in leca. I leave them in leca while they acclimate to my home. When they are ready for up-potting, I just move it all into my chunky soil mix, leaving the leca the roots are attached to. I think people over-think the transition to soil from leca. Just don't disturb those baby roots. Make a basket with fingers, lift it all up en masse, and put it in your preferred substrate. Hasn't failed me yet.

Hey, Adam! Great to hear from you! Thanks for the video. I just wanted to pass on some info about a method for spider mite eradication from miss orchid girl. She has videos (several- gotta find the right one) on the subject. Granted, it’s for spider mites on orchids but I wonder if it may work for your nondescript mites on hoyas or other plants. She actually has 2 methods that both work on the same principle: smother the bastards. One is a mineral/paraffin oil based mixture and one is plain old leaf shine in a can. I’ve had instant success with my orchids (flat leafed phals) and some success with hoyas and other plants. With the others, I have to be more diligent about application since there are more leaves that are not flat expanses like the Phal ( more nooks and crannies). I’ve been lazy after bringing my plants ( hoyas, Phils) in from outdoors and things are getting a little outta hand. These are the methods I will try first. Just a long winded FYI. Good luck on your pest mgmt. 😊

I could be wrong but I think what you have is false spider mites. They appear reddish orange and they don’t make webs. They are crazy small so seeing them is nearly impossible. They sometimes leave trails on the leaves that look like a wrinkly indentation. They tend to go for the sweet spots right we’re leaves connect too. And they love new growth! Wow beautiful silver dollar! Is there a link to where you purchased it? I also use a prop box but use a brick if coco coir that I hydrate and just stick the cuttings in. I usually put a small shot glass of water in to keep the humidity up. This has been fantastic and the cuttings can be transferred to leca, pon, soil or any other mixture easily. I get them at the dollar store so I have more to spend on Hoyas, lol.

I don't think anyone has ever shown, or talked about that before. It's good to know. I hope you can get rid of those mites! Yuck! Can you just propagate hoya leaves with any success? I'm wondering because I just cut the last 3 vines off of my large hoya and had some nice leaves that I put in some damp sphagnum moss in a closed container. The rest of the plant just started dying, so I'm hoping to save the rest of it. I'll definitely subscribe to your new channel! It sounds like it will be fun. 💚❤️🪴❤️💚 Yay! I haven’t been this excited for a video in a while! I recently switched all my props and boxes to this method. Totally gave you credit on Insta 😉 .The little cups make all the difference for taming those roots and you don’t have to transition from on media to another. I found the cups (but white) and soldiering iron (they called it a heat knife) at Walmart. Also those bins are the Best! I’m wish I would have bought more before they sold out. Sorry to hear about the mites. I think I’ve been dealing with them too. I thought they were red spider mites too but like you said -no webbing. I’m slowly getting it under control (I hope)1 room at a time.

I was watching tonight and literally gasped when I saw the magnifying glasses (and scared our sleeping pup) because I bought the same exact ones a few weeks ago!
