Untreated rooms are difficult to record clean, high-quality vocals, talking head, voiceovers or really any audio. Small diaphragm microphones, large diaphragm, lavalier, condenser vs dynamic, EQ, compression, voice isolation, it all gets complicated quickly.
In this video I tested 4 microphones that broadly make up the different categories of microphones to see how they perform in an untreated garage. This is not a scientific test but just a high level overview with real world examples to help you decide what kind of microphone will best suit your needs.
A couple of quick notes:
My mic technique with the MV7X was not good...I was a too close to it and you can tell. I also plan on testing it with the SM7B's windscreen in the future to see if that improves it.
It's probably best to treat the room you plan on recording in but in some situations it's simply not possible so I hope this video helps.
