Can somebody explain what Bladerunner is about? I had never heard of this movie until 2049. I think a lot of people have no clue what it's about which is why it didn't do well in the box office.

I watched a behind-the-scenes clip about that, and one reason why it worked so well, whereas the CGI Tarkin in Rogue One was bit wonky, was because they were able to motion-capture Sean Young's face for the scene. Brevity and lighting undoubtedly helped, but overall it was masterfully done, and did not look like CGI.

I hate how Ryan Gosling garners more credit for his looks rather than his work. The man is a film genius. Despite his immense fame, Blade Runner: 2049 is Gosling's first $100 million budget film. And films with those types of budgets aren't generally associated with being masterpieces, but boy, what a masterpiece Blade Runner: 2049 was.

BUT HE HAS A BAND CALLED "DEAD MANS BONES" AND THEY ARE BEYOND REMARKABLE! HE TRULY ISNT GIVEN CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE! HIS ACTING CHOPS ARE MAGNIFICENT! AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT YOU ADD A FANTASTIC SINGER/COMPOSER/PRODUCER! LOVE LOVE LOVE HIS MUSIC! SAD HES ONLY REVERED FOR HIS LOOKS...* :/

@Chris Stuckmann Thank you, thank you, thank you for this list!! Oddly I saw every film in your Honorable Mention, yet only “Dunkirk” and “Logan”, “Thor:Ragnoroc” and “Split”, were the only ones in your Top 15 that I saw this year. I meant to see nearly all the others, just didn’t. Now I am loaded with a list to enjoy. Again, T H A N K Y O U‼️ I will say it is eerie how similar our tastes are. But you are THE BEST, so I shouldn’t be surprised‼️💯💯💯✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼

FUCK YES Blade Runner 2049. I've seen it four times total--twice in the theater and twice since the digital release--and it's cemented itself as one of my favorite films ever made. Top three, easily. People keep talking about what a technical masterpiece it is, but I think it should be equally recognized for its writing, especially the fascinating character arc Officer K goes through. Truly one of the most tragic, emotional, yet subliminally hopeful transformations ever put to screen.

Agreed! The story was so well-written, it could have been a bare-bones production with little to no special effects, and it still would have been fantastic. They actually got right the concept of visual effects enhancing a film, rather than being the film.

Thanks for the great list Chris. I will definitely check out some of the recommendations you mentioned that I haven't seen. Also, Blade Runner 2049 was easily my favorite film of the year as well. In fact it's probably in my top 5 of all time even above the original Blade Runner which I've loved since I first seen. It is a shame general audiences did not seem to want to give it a chance for whatever reason. I'm just really glad the film even exists as it does and it wasn't some sloppy remake/reboot. If I could I would personally thank everyone behind the creation of BR2049 for making it, whatever that might be worth coming from an average Joe.

+Reeloy Kenjins Or, they just aren't into "artsy" movies. This movie definitely was, but come on....that's one of the reasons why it does live up to the original! Tron: Legacy, I didn't hate, but where it falters was the pace. Yes, the pace...2049 doesn't technically suffer with pacing because it is slow throughout and it goes through necessary story beats. Legascy felt the need to throw in, not really consistent, if well-choreographed, and well-edited, fight scenes and action scenes.

Kes Eylers Stephenson Same! I was like, "Holy hell, that . . . That was amazing and horrible and uncomfortable." And yet, afterwards I realized, I didn't watch a movie at all. I had an experience and for better or worse, I was apart of it. Aside from Dunkirk, I felt like I went through something really stressful and the reality of the situation was harsh and unyielding. It certainly isn't a film I can watch all the time but, it is a film that needs to be seen. It gave me hints of Shindler's list as far as bleakness goes. And the isolation! God I felt cold and alone and I forgot everything but what was happening on screen.

I love love love that #1! Surprised me and made me think long after the credits rolled. It was amazing.

Blade Runner 2049 deserves the high score. It’s such a shame that it bombed at the box office.

If it makes you feel any better the first Blade Runner bombed to, but it eventually found an audience. Same thing will probably happen.

John Campea said it best that Blade Runner did not show what the movie was going to be about in the trailers and failed on promoting the film properly

Great list! Personally, mother!, Get Out, and John Wick 2 would've made my top-10, but totally get why you picked what you picked!

Your top 15 were (almost) all in my top 20. GREAT year for movies. I had so much trouble narrowing down my list to 10 this year. Blade Runner 2049 needs to be seen by everyone.

Unfortunately blade runner 2049 bombed at the box office. My movie theater had a decent amount of people in the seats but I am still surprised people decided not to see it even with the praise.

Daniel Lado if it's not a blockbuster action movie, it can wait for blu ray for some people. Theaters are slowing dying. But there's nothing like watching this movie in IMAX, it was incredible.

Well it was still R rated, and pretty sure it ranked in top 3 for R rated this year. Which isnt bad. Just didnt see wide spread viewers due to it being 3 hours long and being a sequel to a 35 year old cult movie hahah

Loved this year way more than 2018 for movies, seeing as it’s now 2019, so I want to reminisce a bit and give my list of the best films I actually saw: 11. Loving Vincent 10. Wonder Woman 9. Spider-Man Homecoming 8. Dunkirk 7. Baby Driver 6. LEGO Batman 5. Thor Ragnarok 4. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 3. Blade Runner 2049 2. Coco 1. War for the Planet of the Apes

Jingle Dangle Agreed! I don’t know why other critics put Get Out as their #1 movie of the year. It’s a good movie, but man is it overrated. Blade Runner 2049 is a masterpiece of cinema! If there are other three films I’d add to the list, it’d be It, The Shape of Water and Twin Peaks: The Return. It’s an 18 hour film split into episodes.
