My best freind Jim passed away in January. He always bought me gifts for no reason. The last gift he bought for me was a neon green MST3K T-shirt right before he passed. I love and miss you Jim!!!. This man would send me a "Good morning beautiful" text every day. I miss him so much.

Makes me think of my friend Glen. He passed away a couple years ago, but he was an older diabetic guy with one foot, short ass arms that made him look like a fat T-rex, and could go on for hours about the history of any sci-fi franchise ever created. Spent some time watching MST3K and Deep Space Nine with him before he died, good times.

21:32 Not every parent jumps off the sofa and heads to the music store. Case in point: (true story) I had no interest in playing ANY musical instrument until one night -- February 21, 1964, when The Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. My Dad was the type of person who, when he heard of something new or controversial (or both) was going to be on TV, he made it a point to watch it because "I don't need anyone telling me how good or bad something is. I'll check it out myself." And he did. And when it was over, he'd make his feelings known about what he just saw to all of us at one time. There were NO "misunderstandings" in our family! But I digress. The day after that first Beatles set, I leaned on my parents all year for a guitar; however, we weren't independently wealthy, so I had to wait until Christmas of '64. I was 11. Dad made a point of telling me, "I don't want to see that sitting in the corner collecting dust." 57 years later, no dust collects in my little recording studio. What is important about all this is that Dad never blew smoke up my butt about how "good" I was, especially when I wasn't. He had no reason to live his life vicariously through me. This all changed when I called him from Germany during a tour in 1993. We were on the phone for about 5 minutes when he said, "I don't want to run up your phone bill, 'cause this can't be cheap." I said, "Dad, if you knew how much I was making doing this, you wouldn't care how much it costs." We talked for an hour and a half; during that time, he told me "If they're paying you that well, and you like doing what you do, there's no reason for you not to do it." THIS was the acceptance I was seeking for 29 years, and I can tell you there's no drug that was EVER available that can duplicate the thrill I felt right then! After that, anytime I went home, they would make a point of letting them know what I do. Fortunately, I chose guitar. If I had gone Buzz's route, Dad would have shoved that trumpet down my throat in about a month.

I know the feeling you got from seeing others making music and realizing you wanted to make songs of your own. After I saw Elvis in '73 and Elton John in ‘78, I knew I wanted to do that too. I got a guitar the following year and haven't put it down since. I remember sitting in a coffee shop in Seattle, asking my parents for a better guitar than the one I was learning on. They said no, because they didn't think that I would stick with it. Years later, I passed by that same coffee shop in our tour bus, playing shows around the country. It made me smile at the thought of my love that they thought wouldn't last. Some times, Rock is the best revenge. 🤘😂

I recall seeing a news special interviewing them and asking about their scripting process. Saw it when I was young, so I don't know if it was ever uploaded to youtube, but it was interesting in how Mike spoke on how it was actually a process to get so fast as they got with riffing over the years, and the amount of rewatches they had to do in order to perfect the riffing and then practice them while watching the movies.

25:30 The Showstopping Trumpet piece being played by Bud is “Carnival of Venice” by Jean Basptiste Arban. Listen to Sergei Nakariakov play it slightly better here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esV1nbSaxNzcook.html

A comment on that video: "Just his opening notes at 0:31 made me involuntarily weep with pleasure. The delivery, the sound, the phrasing are so magical and like no other rendition of this piece that I've heard. Then come the fireworks and they are literally breathtaking" And I missed all that emotion because I was to hyper-focused trying to find the part that Bud was playing so poorly.

Man, not to excuse Johnny in the Cheating short, but Mary kind of bites as a tutor. Johnny clearly doesn’t have the slightest idea what he’s doing with the factoring and she’s just going “see how I got it?” Clearly not, Mary

@@jaynenunya6070 Sure seems that way. In Tom Lehrer’s “New Math” he gets a huge laugh for saying that in modern (1965) education, “the important thing is to understand what you're doing rather than to get the right answer.” Is it really so preposterous that kids should understand what they’re doing and why?

1:48:30 Constant organ music! Balloons _inside_ of balloons! The future is bright! Wait... Bell exhibited an automated rotary dialer and touchtone phone at the same time? Who thought making punch cards was more convenient than pressing buttons?
@control_the_pet_population
@control_the_pet_population 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, while Bell unveiled touch tone to the public, it wasn't available for consumers until the phone company upgraded the switching equipment in your area. I had a relative who lived in rural northern Michigan and touch tone wasn't available up there until the early 1980s... so I could see the benefit of making some punch cards for frequently dialed numbers if you had to wait a few years for touch tone to be available.

That punch card phone was in an episode of the original Mission Impossible series. Jim Phelps replaced a punch card so when the lady called for the computer to be repaired, she called Barney! Then Willy sneaked Barney into the building inside the replacement computer component.
