Agree with the back weak link perspective on the Back Squat. I was never able to continue progress upping numbers for them without SIGNIFICANT adjunctive Good Morning and Lumber Extension training. Conversely, that was never really a problem with Leg Presses and Hack Squats.

Not to take anything away from the hacksquat, but without using bands the hacksquat fuck my knees more than any other movement. I'll try the bands and see if they alleviate the pain. I love the biomechanic explanations regarding the torque applied to the movements and how to mitigate the force applied to the joints. New subscriber inbound.

I highly appreciate your knowledge and content. You are one of the few worth trusting. I have a Force USA Monster G12 at home that allows me to do both smith machine (vertical) leg press and smith machine hack squats. Based on your advise I will definitely try to load these exercises with a band in each side to make them harder in the full range of motion (especially the top part). Can you recommend how much resistance the bands should be able to provide to give the desired effect (not too light to make a difference and not so heavy I can't move it the last part up). For reference I currently use 95 kg for the smith machine hack squat for 6 reps (3x6+6x3 Myoreps) and 155 kg for the smith machine leg press for 5 reps (3x5+3+2 Restpause). I can adjust the height of bottom anchor points of the bands. Based on the length of the type of bands I am looking for (104 cm) the bands will maximally be stretched about 35 cm at full lockout (I can reduce this distance). My initial thought is two bands providing a resistance of 20-40 or 10-35 kg each since the total resistance will obviously be 2x the resistance from each band. I prefer to use two bands to ensure even resistance in both sides. Is there anybody who could advise me from practical experience?

I think the front squat is the only exercise that comes close to the hack squat. It hits the QUADS much equal(even more) to the hack.
@mojorhythm
@mojorhythm 2 жыл бұрын
Disagree. The thoracic extensors are the weak link in a front squat. Moreover, it takes a lot of technique training, balance and coordination. The hack squat requires much less of these.

If u are still looking, the hack squat was not invented using a machine, obviously.. rather they used a bar behind ur legs, you can Google for a better explanation but it hits really good

Would Pendulum squat be a good replacement for hack squat. My gym doesn’t have a shoulder supported hack. Only the seated you use for calf raises. Thanks

Here's one for you Joe. Less weight on leg press but more ROM ala Mike Israetel. Any thoughts?
@cantankerouspatriarch4981
@cantankerouspatriarch4981 3 жыл бұрын
More ROM is not possible without lifting one's lower back off the seat. This compromised position will likely lead to injury. As long as your back stays on the pad and your legs fully extend (without extreme knee lockout just to be safe), the heavy weight is appropriate.

I have injured my legs a lot in the past and I cannot go into a deep squat. Will it still be beneficial for hypertrophy to perform banded front squat but only perform 1/2 of the exercise?

Geez....I'm thinking maybe the hack squat machine at my gym is broken... because I don't need to add weight it's so damn heavy! Guess I'd look silly with just bands? Lol! Thanks a million for sharing and just kidding... gonna give it a try... quadzilla here we come! :-)

Not all hack machines are created equal. Moving your feet higher and little wider on the platform should feel better. At least that's how I made it work on the 30 year old machine I use.

Is there a degree of elevation you recommend for targeting quads in the squat? I have seen Prime carries a squat wedge in differing elevations and like the idea of barefoot lifting vs putting on squat shoes.
