Special Forces veteran Karl Erickson talks about flashlights and night pistol shooting, and covers a few different techniques. Find a “night shooting” technique that most closely resembles how you shoot most of the time. Find it, then practice it, until you’ve made it a part of your standard training plan.

Outing the light out actual saved my life. I had a run in with some poachers back in November and to show my presence I turned on my flashlight away from my body and they started shooting at it. If I would of held it in front of me I might not be here right now.

I hate poachers. But it sounds like those were some bad people to shoot at you. imo, I wouldn't have used a light. I would've stayed behind a tree or something and voice my presence, keeping an eye on them. They would know I was out there but it be extremely difficult to pin point my position and gives me the upper hand on them. I'd say you did the right thing with the light, just scary to know some of these people don't care who you are and are willing to hurt or kill to poach an animal. just disgusting.

Great point on the speed, accuracy and carryover in training of the weapons mounted light. I like the handheld light for many applications and the way you put them both together makes sense and gives you the best of both worlds without carrying two lights.

Hint for home security.. LED nite lights at strategic locations where they will outline an intruder and not you. They are GTG unless you lose power, and if you have good low light vision they are all you need. Also, trying to clear your home is not that great an idea. better to have an barracade-ambush position set up where an intruder enters a fire zone before he can get at you. I have a split level urban home, with the top of the stairs being that zone. Short 12 GA Mossberg with tritium bead and 00 buckshot

Try this exercise. Point your (unloaded) pistol at any object in the room, as if you were pointing your finger at it. Pretend the pistol is an extension of your finger. So when you point at the clock, for example, hold that position then squeeze the laser button. Invariably my laser is pointing to the middle of the clock or within inches. My point is, at short ranges, (under 30-40 ft) I can point a pistol within a few inches of a target, very quickly without using the sights, simply by pointing it at the target. My laser has confirmed my accuracy thousands of times. Sometimes I might be 6" off but rarely. For me it doesn't matter if I hit 3 inches to the left or the right. A kill shot is a kill shot. It works left or right handed, in any position and also from the hip.. This pointing method breaks all the rules but its very fast and it works for me. It's the way I practice.

That's called point shooting and competence in it is the steppingstone to instinct shooting. Police departments, special forces and other door kickers all are trained to point shoot as well as certain archers and paintball players :) Most engagements do not exceed 50yds. If you want any chance at all in surviving a close engagement point shooting will definitely give you an upper hand.

It wasn't mentioned but controlling and aiming two separate devices is a heavy distraction which could be the difference between correctly identifying a friend/foe. A mounted light is an extension of your gun and the gun is a natural extension of your body - guns and eyeballs. Your focus is then on identifying the threat. Then there's reloading, IA/stoppages to consider.

You can also just put your weapon light on your pistol when ya get home for the night so if someone breaks in they are screwed and your good. It’s for the nightstand or you have a diff pistol as your nightstand gun with a light mine is a MK18 with a light. The bad guys eyes are adjusted to the night already so when ya hit them with that light they can’t see anything they are blind for at least a whole minute if they aren’t dead already bc you can of course see everything better than in broad daylight. And even without night sights they light on the pistol makes your sights very visible a pistol light is always better than night sights IMO.

Thanks for the vid. I'm still searching for the "right" holster solution, but, is it really that unreasonable to carry at night IWB with a light already mounted? Seems too easy to just use something similar to an INCOG with a light on it already, no? Why don't folks carry with the light already on? (I don't, either, but that's cause I haven't found the "right" holster yet).

curious about the slide clip. Do you actually use it for CCW? I ran one with the minimalist holster w 550 cord covering the trigger for extra safety measure. Saw folks at R37 running theirs that way. It does not maintain the draw angle though and that's why I changed to advanced minimalist holster.
@TacticalRifleman

In the summer, I run the side clip with the Vangard Trigger cover. Will never be as smooth as a Crossbreed, but I don't like a hot slab of leather on my side when I'm our doing yard work. Whichever holster design you decide on, just ensure it works for you (like you mentioned draw angle issues) and then practice so it becomes muscle memory. Strength & Honor, TR.

Karl quick question, COL. Jeff Cooper said no lights on pistols-period. I believe he thought it would slow down the operation of the pistol. Do you think that in this day in age, with all the special operations soldiers forging the new combat (offensive) pistolcraft doctrine, all equipped with lights, would he be in favor of lights on handguns; would he become a believer? @m.p.2482 6 жыл бұрын
He's not saying that you should carry it in your pocket when you conceal carry and then mount it when you need to defend yourself. What he's saying is that you can use your mounted light as your EDC light instead of purchasing a separate light for that purpose. A lot of people carry a light on them at all times as well as an EDC knife along with other essentials (i.e. tourniquet, etc.) He then segues to the accuracy advantage of a mounted light compared to a handheld light.

I do not like to use a flashlight in a night fight in case I have to defend an aggression even on my own home. The beam of light from me will give away my location and position. The aggressor might rapid fire on my location and I might be hit even by chance. I prefer to keep still and silent waiting for a movement or sound far or near and try to discern if the source of sound is a friendly or not. I prefer to switch all light to simulate daylight so I can see clearly who is an aggressor or not; or i better wait for dawn or daylight to come.

@diosdadoapias
@diosdadoapias 6 жыл бұрын
stupid you do not get the logic. If you are going to flash your flashlight you are giving away your location. the aggressor is already inside and in place while you are still reacting and you give him more advantage by giving away your location/ position by flashing your lights. as to if ever the aggressor is already having your love one that is already a no choice situation. You must attack to defend your love ones even if it is useless because you will surely be killed when you exposed yourself and there may be more than 1 aggressors. by turning the lights which may illuminate a part of the house- you know your switch and lights of your home and what particular area will be illuminated by a certain switch. At day you and the aggressor can be equal; the same when there is light in the surrounding, you and the aggressor can also be equal because if he can see you through the lights you can also see him the same way. better ask the instructor in this video if there is no grain of truth on what i stated- that is if he is honest enough to consider it. Do not pretend that you are a fighter as i do not pretend also but i have use flashlights at night to find someone; and i will surprised by them as they saw me but I have not seen them yet until they appear suddenly. i also hid waiting the one with a flashlight beaning looking around and i can see and locate him by following the beam to the source. but when there is light at the center the one who can not hide properly is usually compromised. try playing hide and seek and let someone look for you using a flashlight and you can locate him.

...Gentlemen, please help me answer this!...Does a Pistol Lamp NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR LOCATION to a Perp in the middle of the night!??????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Is NOT SURPRISE the best tactic, especially when you know the layout of your home/property better than they!?????? If you are rising from a sleep in your bedroom your eyes will already be better adjusted to dark light conditions??? Isn't a pistol light just extra weight!??? Unless you 8 guys deep and you all flood the property. Kinda like PIRATES who wear Eye Patches to go below Deck for Ammo or Reserves....Thank you for your thoughts!..............

What do you need to see? Where the pistol is aiming: tritium sights or red dot cover this. However, more importantly: Is target a threat that warrants deadly force? Seriously, that’s the point people miss because they only shoot paper. I would prefer you positively ID the target by light coming through the windows or a lamp in the hallway. However, there are times where no light is available. You still need to ID the target. Something for you to ponder: we had a major at my old Special Forces unit that woke to his dogs barking… night before thanksgiving, no one else was home except his wife. Daughter away at college. He went down hallway with Kimber ( no light). Heard a human moving in living room. However, the human in living room heard him too. She jumped out to surprise her Dad that she was home early for Thanksgiving. He shot her DEAD. He has to live with that, but we have to learn from that. A light weighs nothing. I don’t want to turn it on, but ALL my pistols and work rifles have lights on them. Thanks for watching, TR

i thought you were going to talk about shooting with no lights and how shutting your eyes after coming from a well lit room for about 10 secs can help your eyes acclimate. might drop that flash light in a fight for your life

Nope, I can draw and shoot just fine with tritium sights. The light just helps.

So your enemy can't see your flashlight? I don't understand.. When you moving around at night.. What happens when he shoots from the shadows? You super visible and I think bad advice and thumbed down!
