Busy with a few things this week so as a supplement to my Babylon 5 retrospectives, here are the best of Babylon 5 bloopers. While going over some of the behind the scenes material I thought the blooper reels were great. So I decided to cut together some of my favrouites. Enjoy :)

I was going to ASK! Was that Straczynski (the creator/writer) on the crash cart in the last clip? :) He had such a singular vision for this show. And it's amazing that since the story was 'serialized' and intended to run at least 4 seasons, that he made sure to have backup plans in mind for all of the major characters, so in case an actor left it wouldn't completely derail the show. And luckily JMS DID have that forethought because as we all know, various original actors ended up needing to be altered and/or replaced over the run...

Every story about Babylon 5 is punctuated with talk of how much fun it was to work on the show, and the bloopers capture that perfectly. They ran a tight ship but still had time to screw around - like the clip of Jerry Doyle rolling into the conference room on the toy bike - or one of my favourites that's on the DVDs, Claudia Christian turns around to discover someone's had a rubber snake dangling behind her form a pole during the entire take and she shrieks with surprise. Or the last clip with Doug Netter, John Iacovelli, John Copeland and other producers wheeling JMS into the psychiatric ward. It always makes me smile, even though I've seen every one of those bloopers dozens of times.

Another great thing about the days of DVD was having commentaries. Through production commentaries were fascinating, actor commentaries were hilarious. In interviews and bloopers you could tell how close-knit this cast was whereas other large casts you hear about often formed into cliques. They had fun with the crew and had fun with each other, when they fluffed a line they didn't get frustrated they turned it into a moment for everyone. Although she had so many happy scenes as Delenn and always felt so genuine, Mira Furlan's smile restored your faith in humanity.

The commentary on the series 2 DVD set with Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian and Jerry Doyle cracked me up so much, especially the bit where they're talking about how it would have been a nightmare if you were strapped into the Starfury cockpit prop and the crew had to evacuate and left you there and Clauda just goes "that happened to meeeeeeeeee" and they basically ignore her until she says it a second time.
@nnthayer

I think part of it was that there weren't really any divas - these were all working actors, in the trenches, getting shit done and earning their pay. There's solidarity there. In the Thirdspace commentary there's a bit where they talk about being typecast and the roles they were trying to get post-B5.

Isn't it great when a sci-fi show gets the Significant Other Seal of Approval? I love sci-fi that is not only engaging, but also has such a broad appeal. Yeah, once you manage to 'overlook/ignore/appreciate' the early CGI, this is one of the best written Sci-Fi shows to be produced; right up there with Battlestar Galactica, TNG & DS9! It's a bit unfortunate that they couldn't afford to use a higher quality process for the SFX, but at least they tried to embrace the benefits of CGI, which allowed them to stage 'bigger' encounters since they didn't need to film real models. So the space stuff might not have looked as good or held up as well as Star Trek from the same period, but I don't think any of the other shows showed space battles with NEARLY the same scale. And without the option of using CGI to keep the budget down, I don't think this show would have even been produced!
@CybershamanX
@CybershamanX 2 жыл бұрын
@@StreetPreacherr Have you seen the remastered episodes on Amazon Prime (or, a-hem, "other means" 😉)? I'm not sure what they did, but they cleaned up the FX nicely. Both Trek and B5 used very state of the art CGI at the time (both used modded Lightwave 3D programs), but B5's visual style is indeed very different than contemporary Trek's.
@StreetPreacherr
@StreetPreacherr 2 жыл бұрын
@@CybershamanX Yes I watched the most recent 'remaster' on HBO MAX. And they made it look as good as possible, but cleaner/higher resolution images will never be able to improve the flat textures, limited asset detail or 'basic' lighting. The only way to REALLY improve the SFX would be to replace all of the CGI with new models & modern rendering techniques. And I don't think anybody is willing to invest the funds to completely redo everything... But like I said, the story is so enthralling that it's easy to just accept the primitive CGI.

3:53 Here's a seldom-discussed nuance of the production: The onscreen video conferencing was all shot live. The actors in the space could react and play off a live actor behind that screen rather than a pre-recorded scene. Sure, we take that for granted today given how feasible it is to have both the camera and the screens using digital video -- but this was the 90's and you still had to take care to match the live video monitor's refresh rate to the shutter speed of the film camera.
@davidstuckey9289

Interestingly, the technology existed back in the late 1960s- In Gerry Anderson's first live production "UFO" they used a system to sync up the scan rate of the TV screens with the cine cameras as a side bonus of linking all the film cameras to TV monitors in the production staff's office. This was originally a cost-cutting measure to save on extra time developing film for the "Daily rushes". Then again, Ron Thornton was a graduate of Anderson's productions IIRC.

@Jordan McKellar - not sure if you knew but when B5 storyline was being shopped around, it is rumoured that Paramount had passed on B5 and took a lot of the elements from it to make DS9. @@StockportJambo From the perspective of someone who's first language isn't English either: when I'm talking in English I almost always automatically swear in English. I would guess this is rather common, I've been to university with a lot of other people who were not native English speakers but swearing in your native tongue was relatively uncommon 🤔 I'd guess once you're used to speaking a language you naturally stay in it and don't accidentally slip back. If you're newer to it that's different, if I'm speaking Spanish for example and mess up I'd slip back into English to swear (but not into my native German). This got off track but I hope it was interesting :)
@StockportJambo
@StockportJambo 2 жыл бұрын
@@mayra3277 Interesting. I've read that we have half a dozen "slots" in our brains that we automatically go to when swearing, so it's involuntary at the time. Like hitting your thumb with a hammer by accident... the noises you make are primal. You can train yourself to say different things at times like that, but it still comes from those involuntary slots. So when Mira swore, I expected her to go straight to that - which would be what she was brought up with. But yes, she was probably just in English mode at that point.
@mayra3277
@mayra3277 2 жыл бұрын
@@StockportJambo Next time I accidentally hit my thumb with a hammer I'll pay attention to that! :D I need to find out more about these slots, that's really intriguing. But I'd guess the primal sounds you'd make when you're in pain are also rather similar across languages? (I wonder what happens if you pass out and wake up - do you fall into your native language, or the one you were using just before you passed out?) And yeah, after a few years English probably took over. If most of your life plays out in one language you'll start thinking and dreaming in it even if it's not your first, so that probably goes for swearing too.

I've done amateur voice acting for fan audio before. I've heard myself and others flub lines -- or do amazing performances. It's incredible that they don't have more outtakes on screen and especially on stage. One big advantage to audio is you usually have your lines right there in front of you and you often do a fw takes so the team gets the take they want to use. Another advantage, you're not on camera, you can be comfortable or ham it up with gestures or other tricks to act in the moment. Really good auto / voice actors can do amazing things.

Aww. No bloopers with O'Hare? Anyway, that was an eye-opener. I have never seen these bloopers. I only own the 1st episode of Babylon 5 on dvd, which was in a bargain bin (lucky me). 20 something years later I see these, and makes me smile but also want to cry for the people who passed away since then. The best sci fi series for me. Thanks for the video.

So many of these wonderful actors are gone. Richard Biggs, Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Jeff Conaway. And those I didn't notice in this video, Michael O’Hare and Andreas Katsulas. RIP to them all, they are missed.
