I agree. I feel like this is the main exception. There are other movies where he plays a straight/serious character - but it's usually within the context of a more light-hearted, comedic, and/or whimsical story/tone. The guy definitely has range, which is why he's so great in comedy. He can play the straight man or the dufus convincingly. It's a similar quality to Tom Hanks... Which is why I wish Tom Hanks would do more comedies. His 80s comedies are classics - and he continues to prove he's still got the chops whenever he appears on SNL or late night talk shows (at least the good ones).

One flew over the coocoos nest and also he played The Penguin in Batman. Those are the only serious roles I can think of. Always sunny never gets old.

Rob pointed out in their podcast that Danny swallows the beer, breaths, then regurgitates it up and gargles it out. Pretty impressive actually. Mystifyingly disgusting.

Finally got my husband to watch Matilda the other day. It is directed by Devito and stars him and is a very interesting wholesome movie. With the premise my husband wasn't convinced but ended up watching the whole thing. A lot of his lines in that movie he said "he sounds like Frank" and he wasn't wrong lol.

The Rainmaker. Danny Devito played a serious roll along Matt Damon. Legal Drama. Highly recommend people watch. Kinda like how Robin Williams has always been in comedies, like Good Will Hunting. Not Oscar worthy like that but still a great movie showing Danny's other serious acting side.

I've heard "It's Always Sunny" described as an "anti-sitcom". It uses the same format, set-up, and conventions as a sitcom, but uses its tone and writing to deconstruct the typical themes and tropes of the genre.

Dave should watch some Taxi. That was a great show! He was in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest as well, so he does do drama, but he’s definitely best as a comedian.

His role in Batman Returns as the Penguin was terrifying when I was little. Scary movies didn't really bother me because I could tell they were fake. But his portrayal of the Penguin was a bit too realistic and unnerving.

Here’s a weird Cricket thang: that actor was on a “Reality” TV show in the early 2000’s called _The Joe Schmo Show._ It was a ridiculous (and funny), *FAKE* _Big Brother_ -type show where *everyone was an actor* except one normal, unsuspecting guy who they were tricking to see his reactions to the goofballs they made his housemates and the situations they scripted. Cricket (actor David Hornsby) played the obnoxious a$$hole who the the unsuspecting, didn’t know he was getting punked, “normal guy” HATED! 😆

I was irritated in the past with Dave pushing these videos, because they are not ever going to do the show justice without context, but him proclaiming his admiration for the show this episode made me cut him some slack.
