In this video, I discuss some of my favorite and best sounding audiophile records. Last week, I celebrated vinyl first pressings. This week it is all about audiophile records. I discuss the music of bands/artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Paul McCartney & Wings, Eagles, Jefferson Airplane, John Coltrane, The Cars, Toto, Blood Sweat & Tears, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Yusef Lateef, Art Blakey, Dean Martin, and more.
Just a reminder that you can still use code "Melinda10" to receive 10 percent off of your purchases from the GrooveWasher website. @@MelindaMurphy I didn't know at the time we were among the greats. He had lots of stories. One he told, and I may have the details wrong since Charlie Parker died in 1955 but anyway, Yusef said he played a gig or practice with Charlie Parker that went late into the night and he gave him a ride home to his place. On the way back to his own home he realized Charlie left his smokes in his car so he drove back to give them to him and then upon arrival back at Charlie's place despite being already soo late in the evening, Charlie was still up practicing his saxophone late into the morning

I like your description of how to enjoy the Dean Martin record. That made me want to listen to it. Band on the Run and Surfer Girl have to sound amazing I bet. Even my copies sound good so I can only imagine how wonderful your copies sound. Oh man I bet “The Last Resort “ sounds amazing on that version of Hotel California. Ha! Look at you making that joke before showing Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Good one👍. The lighter side of Melinda. You are the second person I watched today in the VC who was wearing a jean jacket. Thanks for sharing your favs. I have a few of them and heartily agree with you. I freaking LOVE the Blood Sweat & Tears one-step. Like you, I’ve been fond of the music since early childhood, and the music really does hold up beautifully. (Ditto for Suite Judy Blue Eyes and Beginnings). The one step version sounds incredible. To any of your subscribers looking to build their audiophile classical collection, I would recommend the RCA Living Stereo titles reissued by Analogue Productions and pressed by QRP. They cost $40 for a 33rpm LP and sound stunningly beautiful, despite being recorded in the late 50s. For now, there are about 40-50 titles in stock. The Deutsche Grammaphone Original Source Series you mentioned are pressed in limited quantities and sell out after a couple months. I think the RCAs sound better, too. Thanks for another great video!!

Hello Melinda! It is great fun to see your diversity in music appreciation. Classical music is very underrated. I’ve got a dozen+ of my favourites on vinyl. They’re not audiophile records but the pressing are from the late 50’s to mid 80’s and are really well done : Pachelbel - Canon and gigue Tchaikovsky-Piano concerto No 1 Barber - Adiago for strings Bach - Air Debussy - Clair de lune Chopin - Nocturne No 9 Grieg - Morning Tchaikovski - Swan lake Strauss - Blue danube Holst - The planets Ravel - String quartet M35 Wagner - Die valkyrie Vivaldi - Four seasons Beethoven - Ode to joy I can think of 5-10 more that I would want to own , but one step at a time , ladies and gentlemen , please. Take care. /R (A at work)

Melinda, thanks for this wonderful video. Among the records you mentioned I have the UHQR of "Kind of Blue"; the limited-edition (1000 copies) of Yusef Lateef's "Eastern sounds" (I have no idea how I lucked out on getting that, but I did!); the one-step of Carol King's "Tapestry"; and the one-step of "Blood Sweat and Tears." What will strike you as strange is that I have not yet listened to any of them! At first I told myself, after I bought each of them, that I was waiting to get a better turntable (with cartridge and phono amp) and integrated amplifier. Well, I've done those things. So now I'm waiting for the weather to get milder so that I can listen to a whole record without the air conditioner or the heater coming on. I saw Blood Sweat and Tears perform the music from this album at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in the summer of 1969, when I was sixteen years old. It's an amphitheater venue with a large roofed area near the stage, and an unroofed area on a rising hillside, which is where I sat with my older sister and her fiancé, under the evening sky. I was amazed that the sound was just as good as it was on the album. That was a memorable experience. Just a side note, you said that you love the 70s sound of "Blood Sweat and Tears," but the album is actually from 1968.

I guess it was the early 70's when I was listening to Spinning Wheel and all of those wonderful songs. It reminds me of the early 70's for personal reasons and that would have been the better thing to say. 😀 What a wonderful memory of seeing such a great band on a beautiful night. That must have been incredible. I hope when you feel the time is right, you open and play those incredible records. You are going to thoroughly enjoy them. 🤗♥️ Thank you and take care.

I only have 3 Mo-Fi records, Miles Davis On The Corner, Beatles "White Album" and just recently picked up Beatles Abbey Road. Love all 3. One 3 record set I can think of that is not labeled as audiophile but sure sounds like it is Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage Act I, II and III. Both the originals (single and double LPs) on Zappa records or the mid 80's box set on Barking Pumpkin records sound fantastic. Some of my fav audiophile copies are a quiex Neil Young's Prairie Wind. Much like the legend of Zeppelin 2 Ludwig pressing, it will skip the needle on lesser set ups, the bass lives large on Prairie Wind and the songs are magic. I also quite enjoy all of my Analog Production CCR titles. I think I picked my favorite 3 but in hindsight, I probably should have gotten them all. Those are the standouts. My copy of the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack also stands out for just how absolutely dead quiet it is between tracks, although I don't know offhand the exact pressing. I thoroughly enjoyed this one Melinda, nice work and nice choices. I'll be searching out the viability vs personal desirability ratio on at least a few of your picks. Cheers!

Great video Melinda! That AP Beach Boys Mono Surfer Girl is mind blowing. I Totally agree that the 30th Anniversary Dark Side of the Moon is Absolutely incredible too! It Definitely beats the current Grundman pressing by a landslide! That pressing of The Cars beats the crap out of All previous pressings! And I Have done the A/B comparisons with Mofi and the OG. This Rhino HiFi wins hands down. When picking my favorite “audiophile” pressings I’d have to say All of my Analog Productions albums (especially Beach Boys and Buddy Holly) and Pink Floyd Dark Side 30th anniversary. Other than the 45rpm Doors albums, I really don’t play too many of my top notch audiophile albums as much. Sometimes they are definitely a nice treat to put on though. The UHQR Kind of Blue 45rpm is unreal. I bet that Coltrane is as well. Recently, I’ve been enjoying the reward of finding a 1st pressing of some older albums and sometimes they can be mind blowing as well. I bet that 30th anniversary of Dark Side has to be fantastic! I recently visited Mike at The In Groove when seeing Metallica in Phoenix, and picked up “Moanin’” by Art Blakey from Blue Note, which he said was the album that got him into jazz music, and it has become a favorite of mine, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was the album that got me into jazz just two years ago, so fairly new still, but very stoked to add another Blue Note to my collection😎👌🥁

I have the original of that BS&T, but I remember it from high school so I double-checked, and it was released in 1968. Ahead of its time. Haven't played it in a while, though. The only audiophile record I can remember off the top of my head is "Time Out" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet; it was a Classic Records release and I remember how amazing it sounded on my previous system; the whole thing was live, in my room! Can't imagine how it would sound on my current system, as the speakers are the only holdover from the previous one. There's a Telarc of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra doing Stravinsky and Borodin I haven't played, too, and a MoFi Billie Holiday, "Body and Soul;" don't remember how it sounds. If the records you showed sound anything like my "Time Out," you're having a blast with them. I continue to live in the vinyl world vicariously through your videos.

My first audiophile recordings that I bought new was the 202 Newvelle Records "New Orleans Collection" my favorite of the four is Irma Thomas "Love Is The Foundation" NVN0001. The other three artists in this collection are all pretty good too. Ellis Marsalis, Little Freddie King and Jon Cleary. These came out in 2020, last I heard they still had some.

Many great choices there, Melinda - I especially concur about the Dylan Mo Fi records - I tend to think of Bringing it all Back Home, Return to Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde as a single quadruple album - can never play one without the others. Have you come across Chesky Records, I wonder? They make very high quality recordings, although they don't put nearly enough of them onto vinyl. Worth checking their catalog on-line - Melissa Menago's 'Little Crimes' with her great version of Cohen's Hallelujah is a wonderful listen.

Did a comparison of the Cars Rhino vs Mo-Fi. The Rhino is has more dynamic range (louder stuff gets louder, and quieter parts get softer), where the the MoFi has a fatter sound. If I'm cranking it, the Rhino delivers. For more moderate levels the MoFi is nice to have. The Mofi Cars record that really blows me away is their Candy-O pressing. Props to Heartbeat City and Shake It up too. Well worth getting those. Just picked up an original pressing of Door to Door, and it's magnificent. There's so little surface noise, it may be the quietest record I own.

They say Rudy Van Gelder's house was too small for the piano, they were wrong on Lateef- Eastern Sounds, thanks Mrs. Murphy for this beautiful record! This will my best record tonally to buy! To me, the original vinyl Billy Joel- Piano man, is one of the best recorded vinyl that I have ever heard. The original Paul McCartney-Ram, has great sound. The UQHR Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue, is one of the best sounding records I've heard. I am going to try to find the older MFSL records to listen to. But I have heard many of the newer versions of MFSL vinyl, & here is my list of the best of them, starting at the top in order. I love the original David Crosby-If I could remember My Name, but everyone I know says the MFSL version of it is the best sounding MFSL record that MFSL ever made. Nest is the 2 Akan Parson MFSL records. But the MFSL & the Analogue Productions Alan Parsons-Eye in the Sky, remasters didnt use the original analog tapes that couldnt be found. Next is the Santana MFSL records. Another much improved with less distortion is the vinyl MFSL Beck- Sea Change, but if you want to save $500, instead buy the MFSL cd Beck-Sea change that sounds 99% as good as the vinyl version of it sounds. Mrs. Murphy likes classical, I bet she doesnt know that orchestras dont use saxophones, because they sound too good to be used in orchestras. Here is great sounding vinyl that was released years after the cds were released. Ry Cooder-Meeting by the River, that is 100% analog record. The best recorded record I've heard. Next is. Nils Lofgren-Acoustic Live, the most dynamic acoustic guitar I've heard. Next is. Wilco- Being There. This is a different category now. The Grateful Dead - Live/Dead (Vinyl, 1969), is one of the greatest sounding albums I've heard. One of the best sounding piano & best seller piano is Windham Hill, George Winston- December. George Winston just died. Another category. Some great sounding guitar not found on vinyl, but found on cd is: Michael Hedges-Oracle. Bill Frisell With Dave Holland & Elvin Jones. Mrs. Murphy was talking about speakers. The best speakers under $1,000 are Canadian PSB-B1 speakers that were $200 new, but just discontinued, but found used on Ebay. These were the world's best selli9ng audiophile speakers, that were Stereophiles speakers of the year for 2 separate years. Stereophile reviews the world's best speakers, but named these speakers, speakers of the year. These speakers are less bright than other speakers.

That's a pretty diverse mix of recordings you chose for this video. You will almost always have me in the palm of your hand if you talk about jazz. Art Blakey was known as a kind of "jazz university". Many promising young jazz musicians came up in his band. You mentioned some notable ones, and Freddie Hubbard was another one. I decided to purchase the Coltrane ALS UHQR; I just love the album as well, just a top notch release in every way. 😻😻😻😻😻 Many people say it beats the first pressing. I must agree that The Beach Boys mono Surfer Girl album pressed by AP/QRP and mastered from the original analogue tapes in all analogue sounds positively terrific. 😻You'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding version of that album. I'm intrigued by the Deutsche Grammophon classical music album you mentioned. I'd like to check that out. Is it an all analogue recording? 🤔 If you like violin based classical music, I recommend checking out the Deutsche Grammophon release of violinist Hilary Hahn's Retrospective album. It's a two lp set, and one of the records is recorded direct-to-disc (D2D). Hahn is widely hailed as the greatest violinist of her generation and has been compared to the truly great Jascha Heifetz by her fans. She also performs really good contemporary music as well. Still a young woman, I'd love ❤ to see her perform live. 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻

If you had a CD player I would tell you to get copies of Bluesiana Triangle and Bluesiana II...your mention of Art reminded me. Those two are remarkable recordings guaranteed to show off your system. I can give a solid recommendation for a single box player that can give you an entry point to music that never made it to vinyl and won't cost an arm and a leg.
