Die Hard 3 is my fave of the series. Bruce and Sam have fantastic combative chemistry, Jeremy Irons is slick af (he's not in a lot of US movies but he's amazing), and it has great action sequences spanning NYC. The Central Park drive is top notch.

The scene in the subway is full of good trivia. 1. The cop pointed his gun at Zeus because he was a young cop (probably a rookie) and seeing Zeus, a loud angry black man, made the cop scared, and that’s why he was acting all fidgety. The whole scene itself was recreated and referenced in the first The Incredibles movie. 2. The part with the subway crashing through the station was all practical and the extras running away from it were genuinely scared for their lives, so that’s their genuine fearful expressions on their faces.

Best one PERIOD!_* 👍👍 *_The Water Jugs riddle is tricky but it tracks: 1) Fill the 5 gallon jug from the fountain. 2) Pour the water from the 5 gallon jug to fill the 3 gallon jug (Leaving exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug) 3) Empty the 3 gallon jug. 4) Pour the remaining 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug (Which leave 1 gallon of space in the 3 gallon jug). 5) refill the 5 gallon jug from the fountain. 6) pour water from the 5 gallon jug into the 1 gallon space in the 3 gallon Jug (5 gallons minus 1 gallon = 4 gallons). DONE! if one is careful to precisely fill the jugs, it is doable._*

The reverse method also works. 3 into 5 (2gal empty space). 3 into 5 again (1 gal left in 3, put it into the empty 5), 3 into 5 again (4 gal in 5).

I definitely solved it via the 2nd method. When I first saw this, I was very confused at their solution and had to watch it back a few times. Of course it works, too, but I had no idea why what they were saying didn’t match any of the steps I’d come up with…

@@ryanclark6402 The math totally works, but if you go only by the dialogue you hear in the movie, you don't have enough clues from that alone to understand their strategy. You simply have to go with the idea that they solved the puzzle, & that the puzzle was solvable (which it is). It's a stretch to think that a person could do it with a ticking bomb, and the stakes are through the roof, with only seconds to solve it. (There are other "that's a stretch!" moments in the film also, but none of them ruin the enjoyment. The whole film is a marvelous work of art. John McTiernan showed the world he wasn't a one-hit-wonder type of director (with Die Hard I)... he came back and did it again (in my opinion, a bit better.)

Either way works, except the 5 into the 3 method is quicker to get to the 4 gallons. Going the 5 gallons route would require you to fill the 5 gallon jug twice vs. the 3 gallons route where you would have to fill the 3 gallon jug three times.

2:30 "Where could [the film makers] go? What other structures could they use?" Back then, in Hollywood a lot of action movies were being pitched as _'Die Hard_ in/on an X'. That continued at least until someone tried _'Die Hard_ in a building' ... and then realized they'd done that already.

This was my favorite Die Hard movie. Adding Sam Jackson was awesome casting even though he wasn’t the first choice. Even though they aren’t cops together, I would call this a buddy cop movie. Kind of like Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte aren’t cops together in 48 Hrs., but I would call that a buddy cop movie too.

I define 'buddy cop' as any movie where at least one of the two leads is law enforcement and they end the movie as friends. So DH3 and both 48 Hours definitely qualify for me. Bulletproof, with Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler, is another of these type buddy cop movies.

You know the cop who kicked down the door in the school to save the kids too, his name is Graham Greene he is a fantastic supporting actor in many movies, but what you have seen him in is The Green Mile. He is the first person we see executed in the electric chair.

So near as I can figure, you fill the 5 gallon jug all the way up you pour from the 5 gallon into the 3 gallon leaving exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon. You pour out the 3 gallon, you transfer the 2 gallons into the 3 gallon, you fill up the 5 gallon and then you fill the 3 gallon from the 5 gallon leaving 4 gallons in the 5 gallon

That's big and going small. After years watching this film I did it small and went big. Fill up the 3 gallon and pour it into the 5, leaving 2 gallon free in the 5 and an empty 3. Fill the 3 gallon a second time and pour into the 5, thus a full 5 and a 1 gallon balance in the 3. Empty the 5, and pour the remaining 1 gallon in the 3, into the 5 leaving a 4 gallon balance and an empty 3. Fill the 3 for a final time, pour it into the 5 adding to the 1 already in there to give 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug 💦💦

Detective Joe Lambert (basically the #2 guy among the cops and who leads the mission to evacuate the school) is played by much-revered Canadian aboriginal actor Graham Greene. He was Oscar nominated for his role in Dances With Wolves, and is also well known for his roles in Maverick, The Green Mile, and Transamerica.

Don't forget about Lethal Weapon with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. If you have not seen them, there are 4 films and each one is its own film but it keeps the story of the family going perfectly

It is so much fun to see you laugh and have a good time with this movie. Hope you and your family are doing okay these days. I'm sure it's been recommended many times (maybe even by me) but a gem to give you that shot of serotonin you might be needing is Clue- a classic murder mystery featuring many comedic geniuses that you'll recognize.

I finally get the water jug challenge. I had seen that someone had broke it down on another reaction, but I got lost in the explanation. 1: Full 3 poured into 5. 2:Repeat step which fills 5 leaving 1 gallon in the 3. 3:Empty the 5, then add the remaining 1 gallon to the 5 container. 4: Repeat step 1 again. 👍🏾 3+1=4 gallons. 💦

the other solution is you fill the 5 and fills the 3 from it, you have 2 left in the 5. you empty the 3 and pour the 2 in it. fill the 5 and fill up the remaining 1 in the 3 from it. 5-1 = 4

To answer the 4 gallon question. Fill 5 gallon. Pour into 3 gallon, leaving 2 in the larger container. Dump the 3 gallons, then pour 2 gallons remaining into 3 gallon, leaving 1 gallon of space. Fill 5 gallon and pour into 3 to top it off, leaving 4 gallons in the larger container.

Who doesn't love a good math problem? My solution to the jug problem would be this: 1) Fill the 3 gallon jug (let's call it the small jug from now on) 2) Pour it into the 5 gallon jug (the big jug) 3) Fill the small jug again 4) Pour as much as you can to the big jug; this leaves exactly one gallon left in the small jug 5) Empty the content of the big jug 6) Put the 1 gallon from the small jug into the big jug 7) Refill the small jug and add its content to the big jug; now you should have 1+3 = 4 gallons

Regarding the water jug puzzle: Fill the 5-gallon jug. Then pour the water from there into the 3-gallon jug. You now have 2-gallons water in the 5-gallon jug. Empty the 3-gallon jug. Pour the 2-gallons of water into the empty 3-gallon jug. Now fill up the 5-gallon jug again and pour what you can into the 3-gallon jug. Since there was 1-gallon of empty space in the 3-gallon jug, you now have 4-gallons in the 5-gallon jug. I wish the movie had actually shown us the solution, if only because I think they could've mined a lot more comedy and tension out of the whole conundrum, with Zeus and McClane arguing. Along those same lines, I wish they hadn't cut away from McClane's fight with the huge guy at the end of the movie. It was like it was over before it began. However, those are minor nitpicks for a movie that's arguably on par with the first Die Hard.

The original title was DIE HARD IN NEW YORK, but there was another title, Simon Says, written by Jonathan Hensleigh, where a cop and his partner try to solve riddles in ordar to stop a bomber called Simon. Hensleigh thought it would the perfect DIE HARD movie in the series.

Getting 4 gallons with the 2 jugs is pretty easy to do, but the one that I don't get at all is how they determined that he was talking about presidents when he asked what is 21 out of 42.

At the time this was released, there were only 42 presidents. BTW, here's the jug solution in case anyone wants to know. Fill the five-gallon jug with water. Empty three gallons into the three-gallon jug, leaving two gallons in the five-gallon jug. Empty the three-gallon jug completely, and then refill it with the remaining two gallons from the five-gallon jug. Fill the five-gallon jug again. Empty one gallon from the five-gallon jug into the three-gallon jug. The five-gallon jug is left with exactly four gallons of water.

@@kellyb3211 No, not really, Since it was the federal reserve, it was probably a 12.4KG "Good Delivery" bar, which would be worth about $153,940 in 1995 when the movie came out, and would be worth about $776,277 today.

For the jugs of water problem, the easiest way to solve it is 1st fill the 5 gallon jug then use it to fill the three gallon jug. This leaves 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. Empty the 3 gallon jug and then put the 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. Next fill the 5 gallon jug and pour 1 gallon out into the 3 gallon jug that already has 2 gallons of water. Now you have 4 gallons. Anothe way to do it is 1st fill the 3 gallon jug. Then pour it all into the 5 gallon jug. After that, fill the 3 gallon jug again and poor it into the 5 gallon jug that already has 3 gallon in it until it is full. This leaves 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug. Next empty the 5 gallon jug and pour the rest gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug. Finally fill the 3 gallon jug and pour into the 5 gallon jug to get 4 gallons.

In the beginning Charlie took a sample of each & put it on a paperclip as a demonstration. They have to be mixed... How did he get his samples? Always felt the best way to disarm the bomb is drain one side. If you can open it for samples, you can open it to drain it. No chemicals mixing, no bomb. Or at min, a far smaller bomb mixed from tank leftovers.

The water trick is simple. You fill the 5 gal jug and pour it into the 3 gal jug. That leaves 2 gal in the 5 gal jug. You dump out the 3 gal jug and pour the 2 gal into it. Then you fill the 5 gal jug again and pour it into the 3 gal jug that still has 2 gal in it. That leaves 4 gal in the 5 gal jug.

@7:11 my country's flag is showing front and center on the soccer ball on the back shelf. Except it's not actually recognized as an official flag. The unofficial flag of Northern Ireland. It looks like the English st Georges cross with a red hand in the center and a royal crown above. Probably the only time the flag has appeared on camera in such a large film production.

This movie was written to be the 4th Lethal Weapon movie, however Mel Gibson had movie scheduling conflicts which it why it became a Die Hard movie.

Actually, this movie was written as an independent movie called ‘Simon Says’. When it was pitched to studios, the people in charge of Leathal Weapon wanted to turn it into a LW movie. But that eventually didn’t pan out for several reasons. The director of the original Die Hard saw a good movie in it for John McClain, and he took it on to beef up the franchise after the mixed reactions of Die Hard 2, (which he didn’t direct). With only a tiny bit of tinkering to shoehorn in John’s character and turn Simon into a Gruber brother, the movie was made almost without changes, (except for a totally different end after the first one proved to be too dark and against John’s character).

Riddle. Fill the 3 pour into the 5. Fill the 3 again and pour into 5 until t is full, 1gal will be left in 3. Empty the full 5. Pour the 1gal from the 3 into the 5. Fill the 3 once more and then pour into the 5. You have 3gal+1gal for 4gal.

Great movie. You know there is a alternative ending where John plays Russian Roulette with Simon and a Bazoka. The other sequels sucks don't waste time with them. The Die Hard Franchise ends here in a perfect trilogy. Die hard like movies (Which are much better the horrible Die Hard 4 and the even beyond horrible Die Hard 5) are Passenger 57 , Sudden Death, Air Force One and Executive Decision.

Fill the 5 gallon. Pour out 3 leaving 2. Empty the 3 gallon and pour the remaining 2 from the 5 into it. Refill the 5 gallon. Now only 1 can be poured out to fill the 3 gallon leaving you with 4 in the 5!

Fill the 3 gallon, pour it into the 5 gallon, then refill the 3 gallon and pour it into the 5 gallon to the top so you have 1 gallon left in the 3 gallon. Then pour away all of the 5 gallons and put the 1 gallon into the 5, refill the 3 gallon and pour that into the 1 gallon in the 5 gallon bottle and you now have 4!

Fill the 5-gallon jug, use it to fill the 3-gallon jug leaving 2 gallons in the 5-gallon jug, empty the 3-gallon jug and transfer the 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug, this leaves 1 gallon of free space in the 3-gallon jug, fill the 5-gallon jug and use it to top off the 3-gallon jug's remaining 1-gallon leaving 4 gallons in the large jug.

It's easy with a 5-gallon and 3 gallon. You're going to fill up the 5-gallon then use that to fill up the three gallon jug. That leaves two gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug. Dump out the 3 gallon jug. Dump the two gallons left in the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. Now refill the 5 gallon. Now fill up the 3-gallon. That will leave four gallons in 5 gallon jug

3gal 5gal: FIll the 5 gal. Pour it into the 3gal leaving you with 2 gal left in the 5 gal. Dump out the 3 gal. Pour the 2gal from the 5gal into the 3 gal. This leaves 1 gal of empty space in the 3gal. Fill the 5 Gal and pour it into the 3 gal until it's full resulting in 4gal left in the 5gal jug.

You dump the 3 gallons, and you put the 2 gallons into the 3 gallon jug, leaving you an extra gallon space in your 3 gallon jug. Fill your 5 gallon jug, then pur one gallon into the 3 gallon jug, which would leave you 4 gallons

So... two Christmas •references•, don't know if that's enough to make it kinda-sorta- a Christmas movie. Your call. •••• One of the nice ways that this Die Hard film departs from the two previous films: for the most part, law enforcement people (mostly NYC cops and rank-and-file FBI) are depicted as competent, brave, serious people (not jerks), squeezing every last ounce of what-is-possible, from the terrible disadvantage that Simon Gruber places them under. That's a refreshing (and slightly unexpected) change - not only from the first two films, but also coming from our own contemporary viewpoint (2023 - when we have good reason to view EVERY big organization as corrupt and incompetent from top-to-bottom.) •••• As we progress more and more into the future, with electronic toll collection in NYC and around the nation now being the norm, this film and the first 'Men in Black' film are throwbacks, with their scenes referencing the now-prior era of toll booths and the need to chuck quarters into those little baskets. :) Imagine having to explain to future generations, "paying a bridge toll with quarters? WTF is that all about?"

Except that isn't how they did it in the movie, because they had 2 gallons in the 3 gallon container*, leaving 1 gallon of empty space, they then filled the 5 gallon container, and filled up the empty 1 gallon of space in the 3 gallon container, leaving 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon container. *They got 2 gallons in the 3 gallon container by filling up the 5 gallon container, filling the 3 gallon container from the 5 gallon container, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon container, emptying out the 3 gallon container, then putting the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon container into the 3 gallon container.

Fill the 5G jug and use it to pour in the 3G jug. 2 gallons will be leftover in the 5G jug. Pour out the water in the 3G jug and then pour the 2 gallons from the 5G into the 3G. Fill the 5G jug back up full, then pour 1 gallon into the 3G jug to fill it up. The remainder in the 5G is 4 gallons

Either way, that plate was at least 4' wide and 8'-10' long, so 40 sq ft and 20-30 board feet = 800-1200 lbs. You were absolutely right in your comment that there was no way he was lifting it to put it back in place.

To understand why the cop would pull a gun on Zeus in the subway, you have to understand the era - this movie was only made a couple of years after the Rodney King Riots in LA and there was still A LOT of racial tension not just in the US but all across the world because of that. Zeus actually alludes to the Rodney King Riots earlier in the movie when he remarks that he only wanted to stop John from getting killed because it would mean "a thousand cops in Harlem, all with itchy trigger fingers", which John accepts knowingly.
