Very interesting concept, and a really clever way to organize everything! I have to say that Im a believer in working really hard on whatever favourite standard with the basis of learning good versions by ear. Im also sceptical towards organizing tunes solely on the chordal material as there are so many other qualites in melody, rhythmic style, tempo and so on. Also, most importantly the factor which decides what tune to work on should be the ones that are most common in your area. This being said, I think this organization can be really good for a lot of people, and I will certainly go back and fill some holes myself:)

Thanks! For a lot of my students that are older, they don’t have any intention of going to a jam session to play tunes. While I’d obviously encourage them to play with others, their biggest challenge is the actual learning of the songs and most approaches not taking into account the amount of new material to learn for each new song. That’s the main idea here.

I was initially trying to come up with a more elegant method, but figured with 100 standards it would be doable. I’d love to be able to apply it to 1000 standards though and really see if there are different results or ‘paths’ that would achieve the same (or better) result than my manual method. Thanks for your comment 🤘

Great! If i had heard of this concept while starting up! The main problem I had when I started out, was being overwhelmed with all the scales and arpeggios you thought you needed to play jazz, all that said, the result of that overwhelm (20 years later) was that I´m still learning my scales and arpeggios, not to say I always believed I was bad for jazz and leave it aside. Now i think the language and the feel is far more important, so starting to learn with a limited language chordwise and building up, while you are playing songs is a really smart idea. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and definitely I would like a part 2!

As an intermediate player, as I was watching I was going back and forth in my mind whether this approach is “right”. But I reminded myself of how I felt in my first year in jazz school and how daunting it was to see so many chords moving so fast even on what today I consider simple standards. Modal jazz is definitely more beginner friendly and back then I wished my teachers would ask me to learn those (I loved Kind of Blue back then - still do). Instead I was in an ensemble group where we played Solar, There is no greater love, Just friends and other tunes that feel easy now but were really hard and confusing back then. Long way to say that I like this approach!

@ 1:55 that is THE main issue I believe most struggle with (i.e. how to apply what we know in different keys); For example, you Jazz Master Lines are fantastic. But I have applied the lines in C major and used them in different keys to avoid learning more and more lines; So this system you mention about Standards is so important and useful. Another idea...can this same type of "system" be used/applied to lines and arpeggios so we can adapt and use in different keys? This was a GREAT discussion Chase and we appreciate your content! Take care!
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback, Nick! I definitely think there are a lot of insights to be gained on the line/vocabulary side as well. For example, if I do an 80/20 analysis on the standards there are clearly a few keys and chords that show up 4-5x as much as others. So, this would seem to suggest a benefit to focusing on those keys first since they show up most often. Lots more for me to think about and analyze, but I wanted to get the idea out there and hear feedback to refine it further.

Actually, I think this is kinda brilliant - in a, "D'oh, why didn't I think of that?" kind of way. Lol of course, the drawback is in how mathematical it is (the Giant Steps exception being a great example), but it sounds like you're doing a great job of taking some of those other variables into account. And at the end of the day, if knowing standards is the goal, as opposed to the order of them, then any order you learn them in that helps speed up and simplify the process seems like a win to me!

So definitely need to work on vocabulary and language, since I got scales down. Really like the idea of working through the different level, learn bits and pieces along the way.

This is an interesting concept, and I appreciate your desire to help students learn more easily what other curricula make daunting. Most of all, I appreciate you inviting a discussion on this, because I think this whole video is super valuable food for thought. That being said, I don’t agree with how often you use the word “objective” throughout this video, because this is not an “objective” or “best” way to teach just because it involves numbers. Your decision to focus on number of distinct chord names is a subjective one, and there are other ways of learning jazz that prioritize other skills that necessitate a different order. Ultimately, there’s no substitute for an individualized lesson plan developed in partnership between student and teacher; because there’s no objective best list (because different students have different needs and priorities), the best ones use subjectivity to their advantage.
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! My point isn't so much that it's the "best" because it uses numbers lol. It's more that, in general and in my experience, jazz educators don't think through the WHY of learning each song and in what order it would be best to learn them. They either leave it up to the student to pick songs or just go by what they know are standards that they've taught before. If I was learning math and I asked a teacher for an individualized lesson plan to learn Calculus now, they'd still recommend I learn Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Precalculus first. My big point is that we should think about what knowledge is required to learn a song and try to structure the learning plan so that it builds on gained knowledge. This repertoire list would be different if you're a drummer or have a different goal in mind than learning the top 50-100 jazz standards.

I do not think the challenge is always "too many chords." A lot of the chords in many standards are extensions and variations of known crords. Now, progressions and movign between keys is quite another story.

Appreciate your process and list. I’d be happy to participate and relate its efficacy if you care to capture any additional data points from my particular perspective. I’d certainly consider what might constitute ‘success’ as memorization across several instruments (different key) among other points. My day gig is a tech engineer at Amazon and there is HEAVY emphasis on real value + efficiency, and since you’ve already invested considerable energy into your method, you might benefit from another player/engineer in which to arrive at its final approach.

I don’t think that’s true. The vocab you know over a drop 3 A-7 shape won’t fit the same over that same shape as F-7. Knowing the chord A-7 is specific to the key and shape and context of where you are on the fretboard, not as simple as plugging the shape in no matter what key.
@Giorgi.Japiashvili

@@ChaseMaddox I agree with your point but it's a much stronger point for piano players since the shape of the chord changes much more drastically when you change a key on the piano (compared to guitar). I subscribed to the mailing list but it's for the course access (standard access, $50 per month), will I get the list of the standards once it's done?
