I never knew I was in for such a wild ride when starting this film but this may be my favourite romantic film and also just one of my favourite movies ever made. I have not stopped thinking about it since those credits rolled! Also, the dialogue in this film is so well done that every single sentence feels natural and organic. To answer the headline question: Yes. Definitely. This is THE best romance movie.

Saw this on the theater on Valentine's Day 1995 with a big group of friends and then we congregated at Denny's to discuss. Literally every one of us was obsesssed. All the girls were already in love with Ethan Hawke from the movie Reality Bites, but this cemented him as our dream guy. All the guys agreed that Celine was the perfect girl. We gushed for 2 solid hours over our diner food. I swear this film made us much more articulate than usual. I really miss the 90's. No internet. No cell phones. We could talk for hours and hours and never get bored. Could a romance like this happen in 2022?

Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013) are the follow-ups of The Before Trilogy. They should definitely be on your list if you really love this movie. Fun Fact: Most of the script was re-written by Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. Delpy later expressed frustration that they were uncredited for their work. However the two stars received writing credits for the sequels, and as a result, were nominated for two WGA awards and two Oscars.

The dialogue is even more amazing than it seems because both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have said that there was almost no ad-libbing involved. They said that they rehearsed the script non-stop until every single specific word and awkward pause included on the pages was meticulously reflected in their performance.

Oh, man. I love that more people are reacting to this trilogy. Best romance movies of all time, honestly.

I also love how Linklater brought these characters back in his brilliant film "Waking Life".

Good to see you react to this, man. Very enjoyable to see someone experiencing this for the first time. It definitely leaves its mark. This entire movie is like one long memorable moment. It's inspired countless other movies over the years and as you said, the chemistry between these two is off the charts which makes those continuous takes really pop. The side characters really add to the charm of the setting, too - particularly the poet. Personally I'd say the Before trilogy is one of the best trilogies ever made, so I have no doubt you'll enjoy the sequels when you get around to watching them. I rank Before Sunrise in my top 3 movies of all time.

I caught this movie a couple years ago because I’m a big fan of Linklater and it hooked me so bad that I watched the next two movies on the same day. I can’t get enough of these two.

A funny thing about this movie is that I recommend it to a lot of people because I recognize the elements that are strongly appealing about it, but I actually don't like it myself. It's kind of like when your best friend falls in love with someone you can barely stand, but you understand and respect how they fulfill each other.

I am so glad you got to see this and shared your viewing with us and I'm thrilled you will be following up with the two additional films in the series. I was about their age when this film came out (at that time we didn't know there would be any follow-ups) and it just knocked me sideways because, in my experience, this is what falling in love looked like as a young man - not like traditional romantic movies, but like this... two people tentatively and excitedly pouring their earnest hearts out at one another and trying to squeeze all they can out of those moments together. I am much older now, obviously, but this film remains the most true to life romance I've yet seen on film. Glad you dug it as well.

Finally! Another person who reacts to this realistic romance movie! Another romance I recommend is Punch Drunk Love. Best dramatic performance by Adam Sandler.

Just watched your reaction on "the Rock" and Con Air" and it sounds like you got the tast for late 90s action movies. There is atleast two more that I would recommend if you have not seen them: "Face off" and "Armageddon". Pretty sure you will like them. 😉

I actually think this is the weakest of the three films. But it is the most romantic. It’s a great trilogy. And I still feel some way that Deply didn’t get a Best Actress Oscar nod for any of the three films. If you’re thinking of checking out more romance films I suggest When Harry Met Sally, It Happened One Night and Pride & Prejudice (2005). Those are a few of my favorites.
